in other words, deadpool was/is a ironic look at the best selling superheros in marvels portfolio... kinda like how watchmen took some of the iconic golden age heros and retold them in a more realistic image... for some reason, i find myself tired of these kinds of things lately... Not quite. Originally the characters in Watchmen had just been purchased by DC from a Charlton Comics, and Moore was given the chance to write a 12 issue comic using said characters. They included The Blue Beetle, The Question, Peacemaker, Captain Atom, and Thunderbolt. However when DC saw what Moore intended to do with the characters, they balked, and asked him to rework the comic so that it would exist in it's own continuity, with new characters. Moore reworked the characters above into The Night Owl, Rorschach, The Comedian, Dr Manhattan, and Ozymandias, respectively. Several other characters were new additions, and the Silk Spectre is the closest to what you suggest, being a deliberate analogue of Black Canary and The Phantom Lady. Also, lets not forget that Watchmen was released more than two decades ago. It hardly qualifies as "lately". (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Especially, since nobody else gets to know, that they are in a comic *g* Nobody else in Marvel. Ambush Bug has the same power in DC. She-Hulk also comes close, with the recent material establishing that Marvel Comics exists within the universe of Marvel Comics, producing comics that directly retell (through unknown devisings) the adventures of all the major supers out there. She-Hulk uses some of her comics as materials for a legal case, because they were published early enough to have the stamp of the Comic Book Code, making them admissable legal documents. The most important question to me: Would Deadpool gain the "License to metagame" quality?

in other words, deadpool was/is a ironic look at the best selling superheros in marvels portfolio... No, actually, he isn't. His creation had nothing at all to do with Spider-Man, from his sarcastic quips to his costume, none of it had anything at all to do with Spidey. He originally came about as a Liefeld/Nicieza creation. Liefeld grew up a huge fan of the Teen Titans, and when he designed a super-agile, amazingly lethal, regenerating mercenary/assassin (who uses a mixture of guns and swords), all in a full facemask/hood, big clunky boots, a weapons belt, etc -- it was basically nothing but a knock-off of Deathstroke the Terminator, the long-running Teen Titans villain. Even his real name, Wade Wilson, is only a few letters off from Slade Wilson, Deathstroke's real name. In order to use the character in Marvel titles (not DC, who owns the Titans), they had to think of something that made him real different from Deathstroke, so Deadpool got the quips, the chatter, the mouthy attitude, to offset him from the famously laconic Deathstroke. QUOTE kinda like how watchmen took some of the iconic golden age heros and retold them in a more realistic image... If by "iconic golden age heroes" you mean "characters most people wouldn't even recognize," then you're absolutely correct. The Peacemaker, Captain Atom, Phantom Lady, The Question, Blue Beetle, and Thunderbolt aren't exactly household names. |
