OneTrikPony: Your links to http://www.projectrho.com/ aren't working. They require you to link to the actual webpage before they'll show the graphic. You may want to change your links, or just copy the pictures and put them up on a site like ImageShack or Photobucket and link to them there.

I've been browsing through the book some more and I noticed something interesting. Of all the sample characters, there really only seem to be four types of characters: The soldier, the researcher, the face, and the hacker. They all appear to be a variation of those four, with tons of overlapping. Since there's only four of us playing, perhaps we should each stake a claim to one of those broad archetypes?

I know Grinder has already shown interest in a soldier type, and my concept could probably go with a hacker/piloty type. I also saw mention of psychic abilities which seemed interesting. I might look into that a bit, too. How about the rest of you?

I was noticing the same thing. If possible, I'd like to lay claim to the researcher/scientist (and perhaps steal some of those psychic abilities of yours, Doc.). Fist would make a good Face type. I'll poke him and ask.

I was toying around with his stats a little and I was really liking where the Psi thing was heading. Maybe we can organize which powers we take? Here's what I roughly scribbled down. I doubt it's anywhere close to what my final draft will be, but it may give you an idea of where I was heading.

[ Spoiler ]

I have to admit, part of me is considering going full-fledged Psi/Psychosurgeon, mostly because I've never been able to get a solid grasp of hacking rules in any game I've played in. I don't know why, but they always through me for a loop. Eclipse Phase's rules look a right bit more simple though, so I'm not giving up on it completely. Just letting you guys know what's on my mind. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

WTF Dr.Funk?!

"Negative Traits (+20 CP): Edited Memories; Mental Disorder (Alcoholism and Depression); Neural Damage (Loss of Depth Perception; Blind in One Eye); Unattractive 1 (Middle-Aged)"

You've got a guy with brain damage so bad it can't be fixed by future tech and he has to wear an eye-patch to cover his Craaaaazy eye. His memories are so F'd up he's an alcoholic suicide case but he's unatractive because he's Middle Aged and his morph's a little worn down?

I'm middle aged, you ageist jerk!
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/grinbig.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grinbig.gif)

It's a good concept I like it. Get some skills that make you handy on a pirate crew and you're good to go. The Colonel is the first "distinguished looking gentleman" Scum I've ever met. But that works for me. The point of the Scum experiments in personal freedom isn't all just about orgies and badass tattoos. Anachronism is just as valid as a form of expression as any example in the book.

QUOTE
it was actually his military Psi training that drew him into crime.

One nitpick: As far as you know, there was no such thing as Psi before the Fall. There's certainly no military Psi training that you're aware of. It's possible, even likely, that you've never even met another person with psi abilities (excepting the circumstance where any of the other crew are Async.)

Having Psi Powers means you've encountered, survived, and been infected by the Watts-Macleod strain of the Exurgeant Virus. (Ref: pp. 218-220) Every player of a Psi character should explain this encounter in the character's back story--wether the character is aware of it or not. (Alternately you could choose to ignore this part of the character's history and leave that in my hands. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/vegm.gif) )

@ Everyone
Don't forget step 7. (pp. 137) when you create your character.

Having a scientist on the crew would be awesome! I'm fully behind that character concept. Being an Async (a person who has Psi) could work well. It might be the 'dark secret' that lead he character to piracy. (That was just a thought not a suggestion.)

Note: As you all start proposing character concepts and ideas it's unavoidable that I'm going to get excited and start chimeing in with ideas of my own that you've inspired. Feel free to ignore me completely. Some of you allready know me personaly as an 'enthusiastic and extroverted' type o' fella (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) I don't want to influence your character development, I'm just here to help.

Speaking of which; Any Questions about the setting or rules so far?

Hey! It's not my fault the book describes older-looking morphs as ugly or expressions of a cheap person. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif) At least I didn't go with the Aged trait that makes anyone over 19 sound like a crippled old man! But hey, at least the depression and alcoholism is fixable. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) And thanks about the tidbit on the virus. I saw mention of it here and there, but nothing really went into detail about it (and I was too lazy to be aggressive in hunting down the information). It won't be hard to explain either way. I'll just make it the means of his 'freedom' rather than the reason he was kept around to begin with.

Oh, and yes, I know about the gear. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif) Having a Re-Instantiated background simply took away the 5,000 credits you get for free. I'm new, but I'm not a noob, dammit!

As for questions, how were you planning on having the campaign start? Was there any significant event that brought us all together? Where did we start out at, and where will we be beginning the game? Have we been together long enough to form any kind of camaraderie, or were we all escaping SomeReallyBadEvent™ and just now wound up on the same ship? etc.

Hmm. I was looking over the skills and the sample characters, and every single sample character seems to have a huge number of bonus points. The problem is, I can't figure out where they're coming from. They're labeled as Morph bonuses, but I don't see it mentioned in the Morph descriptions. Any help?

Virtually all morphs have some listed under their Advantages. Might looks like +10 SOM which means +10 to the Somatic aptitude.

Oh, so those apply as an additional bonus to SOM-link skills, too? That kinda fits what I"m seeing. But I didn't know they doubled up. (Or are they purely skill bonuses and not bonuses to the actual Aptitude?)

I'd imagine they are merely listed as they are in case your character resleeves into a new morph, so that you will have an easier time separating your ego and morph aptitude and skill bonuses.

Random note : Critias would be awesome as a 5th player, and would probably be the only way I'd ever vote for breaking my offical "4 Player Rule". He's good people. I know no one proposed it, but someone should have. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Anyway, I could do a face, although I was going to go more the "soldier" route, simply because I don't know the setting. I have reservations about playing the front man in a setting I don't really get. But I'll see what I can mess around with. I'm still trying to get concepts together, and wrap my head around the fact that I don't need to wrap my head, I need to open my Possibilites. I hate doing things with my Possiblities, I always get these weird popping sensations.

And Jesse, FYI, I've now nominated you unofficially for Best Post Ever like three times now. Although Critias posting Dennis Leary's "You're an Asshole!" song to another poster in it's entirety is a high bar to meet.

Ooh. I found a badass picture that I think I'll use for my character. It's not quite what I had in mind originally, but it fits the theme really nicely and he just looks really cool. I think he's from some video game or something, but I dunno. I still like it a lot. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'm definitely learning towards a strong Psi (with a focus on telepathy and limited mind control), with Psychosurgery and Brain Hacking as his more technical specialties. A decent hacker outside of that, and he definitely knows how to fly a spacecraft. Though I imagine we'll probably have an AI pilot or something?

OK I've got a long night of patrol on a base with absolutely nothing going on so I should be able to read through the corebook tonight. Any suggestions on things I should start with?

Gear???
Is my book diferent?
p. 130 "Step-by-Step guide to character creation"
Step 7 Choose Motivation.

to me your motivations are one of the most important parts of your character. I was pleased to see motivations developed as a direct part of the game mechanics and tied to Res Points (Karmic character advancement awards.)

EP is a fairly crunchy game. I love the mechanics but at heart I'm really a role-player. Motivations are important and now we have mechanics that create awards specifily of Being your character.

I thought I'd let you all decide how the crew came together after everyone has some idea of their character's histories. I want to let each concept evolve independently and the crew to come together...
(fuck I hate it when I can't find a word. start's with G and is synonymous with naturally and biologically and grow. BRAIN FART)

Anyhow. get a basic outline of each character's background and then start riffing off of eachother.
If anyone gets stumped or has questions about how to make a concept work I'm happy to provide references and ideas.

Basic guidlelines: (these are only guidelines, not ment to violate any player's concept)
1. The crew has worked together before. You know each other well enough to work well together but you havn't been together long enough that you all know eachother's secrets.
2. You've pulled off enough capers to keep the ship running and become fairly adept pirates but nothin big enough to attract a major responce or gain any extreme notoriety, yet. As Pirates go you're at the middle end of the pack.

3. I'm nearly finished with the Adventure Intro. You'll be able to read it tonight.

You said page 137. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif) And I did list some motivations! Though that was just the first set that jumped out at me.

What I did was just sit down and started going through the character creation process. Looking through the list of Backgrounds, Factions, and Morphs gave me a really good understanding of some of the possibilities. That's where I'd suggest starting. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Adding Up Skill Stats:

Just so everyone is clear. 90% of the time your roll will be a Skill check.

The target number for your skill roll is: Aptitude + Morph Bonus to aptitude + Skill rating + (Specialization) + (Gear Bonus) +- (Situational modifiers)

I made a Character sheet in an MS office .doc form that I'll upload if anyone wants it.

I like Critias IINM he's also a member at the EP forrums and we've allready talked about EP spaceships and stuff. He would be good because if it's the same guy he's about 9x smarter than me. Do you know if he wants an invite? I'm hesitant to add more players. For one thing I've allready told Black Hat that I couldn't handle anymore. If It turns out that I'm a proficient EP GM I'll concider opening another thread. I should have thought of Critias myself tho.

It would be fine if you played a soldier type. Stay in your comfort zone as long as your character is interesting to you. Obviously you'll be looking over the skills mechanics and gear. You know my OneTrik is making brawlers so if you want some munchkin help give me a basic concept and I can point you in the right direction. Think about maybe adding some hardware skills to the combat stuff for more character utility.

As to soldier bacground in the setting; look at Direct Action [p. 71], Gorgon Devence systems/Medusan Shield [p.72] The Story of Locus Hab [p. 103], Titan [p. 106] (compulsory civil/military service implies that there have been military actions on Titan in the past), Jovan Republic [p. 75] (you could be a Jovan expat) Median Argonauts [p.79]
Remember that if you're older than 30 and were in the millitary over 10 years ago you probably were involved in the fight against the TITANS

What did I do now? Which posts got me nominated? I thought I'd been keeping my current dumpshock term fairly tame.

OK so I have an idea. I want to play a re-Substantiated. A soldier who was killed during the Fall and woke up with a doctor with octopus legs standing over him.

A mix between Fry from Futurama, John Spartan from Demolition Man and Tom Hank's character from Saving Private Ryan. This new age is crazy and he can barely take it seriously. He was a normal guy before being a soldier, which he was actually fairly good at. Thinking of mixing soldier/face style, like a junior officer/sargeant type.

That sounds perfect. Does that mean you'll be saluting Dr.Funks character, Colonel Angus? LOL

@ everyone:
In case you came here bypassing the first page I've posted the adventure intro at the top of the thread with corrected links for sompicures of Freighters.

Anyone who wants to can add Profession:Space Pirate 20 to thier characters skills for free. This is the skill you use when you're wondering about something your character has knowledge of but you don't personally know. I can use it as a failsafe when I'm having trouble communicating the situation.

The Ship and the Shuttle need Names. Everyone put your heads together on that one please.

If a 5th spot opens up, at some point, I certainly don't mind if Critias gets dibs, if he's interested. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) This seems like a game where you guys kind of already know one another. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I'm mostly lurking since this thread just introduced me to EP, and I'll be interested to see it in practice (and I've been poking around on the EP forums too, but didn't see any PBP games).
I am really digging this new system, so if you guys find yourself in need of another interested player (or if another EP game starts up), though, I would certainly be interested.
