QUOTE (Austere Emancipator @ Oct 27 2005, 01:26 PM)
I think I'm missing something about how much extra velocity you get with more barrel length with such handgun cartridges? The Guns & Ammo I'm using for reference has 6 240gr loads tested out of 6 - 8.27" barrels, ranging from 1200 to 1375fps, averaging at about 1300fps, while the article about the Ruger 99/44 mentions two velocities for 240gr: 1643fps and 1733fps. Using a straight progression from 1300fps at 8" to 1688fps at 18.5" would mean an average of 1522fps at 14" -- hardly the most accurate method of estimating the velocity, but it makes 1400fps seem a tad low.

Forgot about this...

Yeah, sorry. My fault. I apparently rushed a tad too much. I'd added those not-exactly-average 300 grain loads in with the others (excluding the 180 and 270 grain loads; just used that middle paragraph), averaged them all out (to 1615 fps), then figured from there against 1180 fps from a 6.5" barrel (standard 240 grain velocity). That comes to 1451.8 fps at 14" without figuring for the expansion ratio. How's that for shotgunned math?

If you average out all of the loads listed for the 99/44 (including the 180 and 270 loads), that average comes awfully close (in both bullet weight and velocity) to the Winchester 250 grain Partition Gold load's ballistics. According to Winchester, that load does 1230 fps out of a 6.5" vented barrel. Against itself, that figures to 1508 fps out of a 14" barrel, again with no curve. So you're right. Around 1,500 fps seems to be about average for the .44 Magnum out of a 14" barrel.

I don't think this post could have much less to do with Shadowrun. ;)

*bump* Ressurecting a good thread from the dead.

To get back more on topic, what does everyone think of the revised shotgun damages?

Shouldn't this thread be in the SR4 forum anyway?

shouldn't dead threads be left to decompose with dignity?

anyway. the SR4 shotgun damage codes look okay to me, though i don't have the extensive experience with shooting things with shotguns to offer a really solid opinion. the lack of spray-everything-in-the-freaking-room spread rules pleases me.
