really trying to tackle the feel of 'realistic' armor for that one and I'm trying a technique by my favorite artist Shirow Masume.

...not a bad influence I must say...

Here is the first draft of KK. The thing I found the hardest was the face again. This time however, it had more to do with the fact that I wasn't sure if she is asian or if she was caucasion. Anyway I tried to do asian, which I'm learning is giving me great difficulty. I love it! Anyway, let me know what u think.

The King of Shine, eh?

Hmmm... The KK picture... Is good, but the face... wtf is up with her eyes? She looks like they're about to explode from pressure. Like she's about to flip her wig, and start busting out caps. Other than that, I think it's nice. :)

Also: Link to the thread wherein I showed everyone your drawing of the space marine. They liked it. :P

...basically KK is a Caucasian but had cosmetic surgery to make herself look Japanese to keep certain people from recognising her. I like the pose, shows a feeling of confidence. You definitely have the Bushido Cowgirl look down, but alas, she appears too tall. KK is only 4' 10" (barely legal enough to ride in the front seat of a car in RL today). Check the following links. Kelly intended to be an Olympic gymnast when she was a young girl & that is more how she is physically developed.

Mary Lou 1
Mary Lou 2

As to the eyes, I agree, with ShadowDragon8685, a bit more toning down to the facial expression, granted she can be a bit impulsive, but she also spent several years under tutalege of a very renowned sensei in Kyoto Japan who instilled in her a sense of patience.

Granted, ethnic nuances are tricky & it took me some time to not make them appear too forced or 'stereotyped'. Check out some of David Mack's work on the indie comic/graphic novels Kabuki. Below is a link to the David Mack Guide.com site

David Mack-Kabuki

There are a number of galleries devoted to the Kabuki title. In particular, look at images from the Circle of Blood arc.

I'll see if I can fix that with this image.

Yes, I see what u mean. As I said this is the first draft, and I use a .05 lead on drafts so the eyes looked "bugged out" because i went over them too many times. In the inked version it won't be so prominent.

I had no idea that drawing asian women would be so hard, it has been a real challenge, I'm grateful for the experience.

That is going to be of big help, thanks.

o.k. its back to work. I have some time today so I should have something up by tonight.

...I see you reversed the pose. The Tsunami wave on her jacket is more prominent in this one, as is the tattoo on her shoulder. Very nice. The expression in her eyes looks more subdued in this one.

Still a bit tall, but as you mentioned you will be doing another sketch tonight. Drawing shorter than average people is also tricky and I have often seen the pros having trouble with it. There were times Wolverine of X-Men looked more like an NFL Offensive Lineman when he was supposed to be the shortest character on the team (well maybe next to Jubilee).

BTW, Ms Retton was actually the physical model I based KK's physique on which is why I included those two links.

I actually I didn't reverse the pose on purpuse, to get a cleaner image I used Trace/Vellum paper and when I scanned in the new image I must have placed it on the glass inverted. Sorry, I'll be more careful next time. Here is the image a little shorter and with the asian look. I think I finally got it! Let me know.

Now that...

That is good. That is really damned good. That's freakin' good. That's just... Wow. That's like... Awesome. Especially the thing with her eyes.

Okay. Got another challenge for you, HC. I'll let you take your pick of them. Of course, you can ignore my ramblings, if you please, but these are just some ideas.

Challenge 1: Security Armor Writ Large:

This isen't ordinary, "Covers a person" armor. This is "Person pilots this thing" armor. This is armor with a Body rating of it's own, that follows the Vehicle rules.

Essentially, this should take a normal-sized human, say, 5'10", and turn him into an armored monster that's hulking a bit over a large troll.

You don't have to pack on ALL of the following features, but I'd like to see how many you can put on without it seeming cluttered or wrong:

A melee weapon
A flamethrower
A general purpose Big Fucking Gun. (Or Big Fucking Laser, if you like.)
A rocket-launcher. (Either One Big Rocket or a pack of smaller rockets. Or both!)
A head covered with interesting sensors, preferably a different "design pattern" than the "sensor mohack and black bands" from the Space Marine.
A commo pack
A jump jet-pack
A chain-gun

Challenge 2:
Simpler, perhaps... I want to see what you could do with Skate, if given free reign and the only instructions being "No significantly concealing clothing, and no "artistic" hiding of 'naughty bits.'" (Just one of my pet peeves.) Provacitive, innocent, sexual, demure - hell, she could do any of it. I'm just curious to see what you can do.

...Now that's my gal. She has a more determined look with the Asian features. Her proportions are much closer to what a gymnast looks like. I always envisioned her being a bit more buff, kind of like a female dwarf with a thyroid issue. Again, I love how you incorporated her "signatures" while still maintaining a dynamic pose. She looks like she's ready for a bit o' rootin' tootin' hoop shootin'.

If you get around to doing a colour version it would be cool. Her face is done in white kabuki makeup the lips black and the rising sun motif in red. The jacket is black with the wave in light blue & white accents. The chaps are brown, the slacks white & the Stetson tan

Seeing the "Americana" version inked is also great, the expression in the eyes is still one of intensity but not as if she's going to go postal. More like she's saying, "You again? Why can't a varmint like you learn to stay down when he's down?" (something she actually said when we were dealing with several Shedim on one mission).

The strange thing is both appearances can work since she does have the facial sculpt power and uses it frequently.

YES! :) I had that same thought when inking the 'Americana' version. That's awsome. I'll have an inked version of KK for you by tonight.
In the mean time here is the first draft of the Mech.

And FYI, I don't do many of these kinda drawings...so when I finished, I was a bit taken by it.

Very nice and very intimidating.

Oh wow, hah. That's pretty freakin' sweet awesome. You did something I wasen't expecting, with the regular-sized armored arms below the big-ass mech arms. Pretty nifty. I think it rocks.

Could you take me on a blow-by-blow of what he's got? I wanna see how he stacks up (and it looks like he stacks up favorably) against the inspiration source.

[edit] After showing it to some other friends, someone said that you were drawing the inspiration from the King of Shine - I got no problems with that. :)

But, personally, one thing about it really irks me. The treaded feet - they just... Don't seem to do anything for me, really. Except make the suit look kinda silly. I can't see treads that size being any useful for motion that woulden't be better served by using either the legs in a more conventional fasion, or the jump jets... I'd rather see hella-sweet mech-boots. :)

And the Mech inked.
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/50118033/

Play by Play: From top to bottom. 4 mini missile packs( or regular missile, short/ medium range.) 14 missiles each. Long and short radar arrays with full spectrum antennae. Right arm has 30mm gatling/rail gun. Left arm has a dual plasma cannon, each arm equipped with gyro-stabilization/recoil compensators. On the chest are two flood lights. jump jets on the back and legs. The legs contain forward and upward jets. The Feet I made Tracks on a huge ball bearing with a split shin for manueverablity, may not look the greatest, but this baby can roll at twice the speed that a flat foot could run. :)

Now to come up with something good for Skate. :D

The finished version of KK makes me quiver in the fear that she might be after me.

As far as the 'mech, I like it, the only problem with the treads is stability. If it's rolling that fast, there's no way it's going to keep it's balance... Oh well. It still looks good, I just ignore the part below the left leg's shin. :)

What kind of weapon is that in the smaller arm's left hand, by the way? Just an ordinary carbine?

Heh. Actually, I was basing it off the T'au commander's XV-22 Battlesuit from the Dawn of War: Dark Crusade expansion. :)

Still, you oughta play a mech game. Thanks, it looks great.

While we're on the subject of "long-eared galoots," I've got another for ya. You've done admirably with humans and mecha, let's throw a non-human at you. A contact of mine I've been looking to flesh out.

Lindsay Cartwright-Elf, indeterminate age, though she appears to be no more than 30. Her face is slender, of the standard elven type, that looks more mature than young. Hair is blonde and long, almost always tied back. She's a performer (jazz singer, sorry boys ;) ). She usually wears a long dress that clings to every curve, the image of carefully harvested sensuality. She's attractive and knows it and has no qualms with using it. She's average as elves go, slender limbs and body. There's a tattoo of a black rose on her right shoulder.

QUOTE (ShadowDragon8685)

...major grudge against TT nobility/royalty, regular grudge against other TT elves, wariness of all non TT elves, particularly since many have fled the "Land of Broken Promises" to Seattle after the old TT political system collapsed.

For example: After one run she actually refused healing from a an elf mage she had just met & would not let him stand behind her even when he was willing to give her counterspelling. She has since learned he was a former Tir Ghost and now keeps her distance from him as much as possible (as well as a hand on one of her Warhawks).

A lot of this stems from the abuse she received at the hands of elven kids in Salem where she grew up & the fact she became a scapegoat for causing trouble when it wasn't her fault, the beatings she received from her elven father, and finally being abandoned in Portland at the age of only 12.

Yeah, she had some pretty good influences for becoming a runner.
