There was a lot of stupid writing in System Failure. Particularly involving space. It appears that some people (including the writer and the developer) didn't realize that it takes a LOT of energy to remove things from orbit. Things don't just "fall" out of orbit.

Which book is this detailed in? I just re-read SR4's history lesson and there's nothing in there about the Z-OH crashing and the corp court justices on board dying. Hell, of anyone, you'd think they had a backup system. I would think that ALL of the space stations would have a backup system that is completely independent of the Matrix. Honestly, to NOT have a backup system... well I guess that's why they died... Terminal Stupidity. |

I'm willing to bet that decompression, exposure to space, and re-entry killed them.

Even the ISS has redundancy systems. I would have to ask my brother on the systems, but I do remember ages ago that they have three redundancies on each system. Worse comes to worse you can do a manual firmware reboot.

Because it's not like the super virus unleashed could have made the stations decide to perform a reentry or any other plausible cause for the event (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sarcastic.gif)

What the real story behind Ni'ihau being off limits? "A bridge between worlds" perhaps? The one Harly stopped? Ugh. (Searches jumbled, half forgotten memories...) Wasn't that supposed to be on the mainland? Crater Lake? No, I suppose that would make way too much sense. Please tell me this isn't in a novel somewhere. -paws |

I searched for references a bit. The bridge was a blood magic ritual performed on Haleakala (mentioned in Worlds Without End pg.28). Haleakala is on Maui.
Ni'ihau is called the Forbidden Isle even today. Wiki. If there is an SR explanation, I donĀ“t know it. |

Because it's not like the super virus unleashed could have made the stations decide to perform a reentry or any other plausible cause for the event It might, but they don't have that much energy in their stationkeeping systems. I might convince you to fly to Hong Kong by flapping your arms really hard, but you are unlikely to get very far no matter how convincing I am. |

I think we can agree that it is highly unlikely they would have enough energy at the time to perform a reentry. But stuff falling from space is just too cool to pass up. And in a game where Dragons and Elves and Magic and Cyberzombies exist, I can deal with a few CRAZY coincidences in the name of dramatic imagery. In other words, I concede your point and make it fit my own!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I searched for references a bit. The bridge was a blood magic ritual performed on Haleakala (mentioned in Worlds Without End pg.28). Haleakala is on Maui. Oh good. One less obscure, hard-to-find, reference to try and track down. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) QUOTE Ni'ihau is called the Forbidden Isle even today. Wiki. If there is an SR explanation, I donĀ“t know it. Huh. I, apparently, critically glitched my search-fu when trying to research this. It doesn't quite explain the harsh reactions of the Hawai'ian military (in SR) to trespassers, but, whatever. It's probably either something big-and-magical going on or... its purely a cultural thing. Thanks, Ryu. -paws |

- What became of Tir na nOg? - What's the status of the other Tir Taingire IE today, what are they up to? - Why the hell didn't they just netherwalk into Zincan's office and rip his head off on his first day as 'high prince'? |

What is Wolfgang Kies? Today very likely a possession-based conjurer of beast spirits. Back in the day it could not be done. Always tought he was merely a wolf shapechanger ... What makes you think he is a beast spirit? Who actually engineered the nanosecond buyout? Damian Knight as mastermind with Dunkie as investor. Actually, it was thinked by David Gavilan, programmed by Lucien Cross and funded by Dunkie |

*lets Karma rain down ever so gently on DireRadiant*
- Why didn't Sosann Neirenn/Alachia just rip off Zincan's head? She's not the most forgiving person and surely wouldn't step down as a Prince just because some cokeheads from an Ad Agency let loose a smear campaign against herself (she'd rather kill Horizon's leaders, possibly the entire LA staff. She's an expert blood mage and specialises in hurting large populations, after all). - What's Mujaji up to these days? What's the status of South Africa/Azania anyway? - Why has never, ever, there been an attempt by dwarfs to create their own little homeland? |

What beer does Harlequin drink?
Hey! It could be important! If he ever shows up, you want to be prepared for him! He could be back at any time after all. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/vegm.gif) |

ED.Second Edition.Horror.Cauthronne(or however you spell her correctly) = Winternight.Shamans.Toxic Raven Totem?
(just thought how the GOD-Chips/Berserker-Chips are essentially EXACTLY the same thing the Horror does for her marked ones, her apperance is Raven-related too!) |

And those thrusters/Airlocks/Things-That-Will-KILL-You-if-they-fuck-up are on a network? Sorry I don't see that happening. Everything else, sure... no problem. Actually, that makes sense. In order to keep the diagnostics overwatched more easily (and costs of operation lower), beam the controls and diagnostics to an earth base. There you have a Tech that handles all of the stations owned by a megacorp available 24/7 and they trouble shoot any issues it saves on having trained astronauts taking care of routine functions around the clock at each facility. Also allows you to run it through a supercomputer based on Earth that will forecast any forseeable issues with the up to the nanosecond diagnostics. And if there happens to be a malfunction, there is a system in place to ensure the entire station is not taken out because the tech on the station hooked up the wrong hose to the lifesupport system. I'm not 100% sure we aren't doing as much of that as we can now with the International Space Station. With the history of space exploration consisting of catostrophic events such as Apollo 13 and the last one where the shuttle blew up (cause I forget which mission it was), a level of control given to mission control seems, on paper, a good idea. Load the matrix connection in a similar vein to the other connections that travel between the earth and ZO and you would be pretty certain there would be no issue with hacking. Of course, your opinion differs. I just saw the pervasive presence of the Matrix as put as much that can be controlled by a computer on it. |
