You could do a lot worse than Deus Ex for atmosphere. Never did care for the graphics though. I didn't have a Voodoo card, and I'd pick a different engine for the game, but I can forgive a lot for that same feel.

I don't remember if I ever posted in this thread or not...
I, for one, am looking forward to the idea of someone making a SR game. :D Perhaps we'll get lucky and (even though it'll be nothing like sitting around the table playing SR) it'll be good, and if not, then let it rot in the bargain bin... It's a win-win situation. |

More teasing:
http://www.fasastudio.com/portal.htm This is most likely the run-up to an E3 announcement of some kind, so look for the hype to start next week. I'm still hating the console nature of this game. At least it will be on the 360, so the graphics have a shot at not looking like crap when they port it over to the PC. And as always: At least it isn't an MMORPG. |

I thought Marathon and Halo were pretty similar, storyline wise. Marathon just had more pages of text to tell the story because of how it was designed. But, still, though...the same cliched lost civilization ancient power schlock that I remember from Marathon was in Halo. Halo just told the story in a more condensed manner. |

Outside of the splash page showing, perhapse, a shadowrun team (human, troll, elf, dwarf), there is no mention whatsoever on their website about any upcoming xbox game outside of their Crimson Skies and Mechwarrior games.... at least not from what I can tell.

Honestly, I think that perhaps the storyline just started to blur between the massive amount of levels. Heh, the one thing that was really funny about Marathon was how your punches appeared to be karate punches when observed in multiplayer mode. Add onto that how forward motions made your punches more powerful and it lead to endless iterations of the REVERSE PUNCH KIAI and KROTTY LOL joke between me and a friend. |

If they are gonna do it right they should do something along the line of Deus Ex and System Shock 2 – that would give a nice blend between FPS and RPG and add the elements of the Matrix and/or Astral Realm.
Preferable it should include multiplayer instances (corp runs etc). |

Yeah. and MMO that'd be fun... people could camp the Archology waiting for Deus to spawn.[/sarcasm] seriously an MMO would be about the worst thing I think they could do to SR. You think it's bad that the animator knows nothing about the game? Well how about when 95% of the people playing know nothing about it and you have no choice but to deal with them every day. |

Other then the fact that the ignorant 95% would be armed and violent it would sound like a good way to represent the general SR population to me. Clueless to the struggles going on around them.

After reading the Wiki articles I have to restate my opinion that I really don't think the Marathon storylines are better than the Halo ones. In fact, I don't think that any of the storylines are particularly epic or amazing. They're fine for what they are but they never really sucked me in; not the Halo storylines or the Marathon ones. Perhaps Halo 2 has the best storytelling of the bunch. I think that maybe the biggest non-technological advantage that Halo has over Marathon is the fact that they usually give you enough ammunition to be able to use some kind of shooting attack against the enemies. I remember how in Marathon and Marathon II there were some parts of the game where your ammunition was extremely limited and you ended up killing a lot of the enemies with your REVERSE PUNCH KIAI style punching. While I appreciated the tactical challenge of needing to conserve ammunition I remember feeling vaguely annoyed that the game gave you all of these weapons which you spent a lot of time not being able to use. I think that ammo starvation has its place in some parts of a game to increase challenge and tactical thinking but if you overuse it for the whole game you just get tedium. Just my thoughts and memories. |

I think you just have to keep in mind that FPS "stories" are completely second fiddle to the Killing of Everything That Moves. I figure they're just not supposed to be worth a damn. That way I'm not as disappointed.
It's part of why no matter how pretty the graphics are, or how great the physics is, or how much damage I can deal out, I always always always get bored with FPS's after the fourth or fifth level/mission/whatever. |

The counterexample that immediately comes to mind is Damage Incorporated. In fact, the storyline was rather silly, but the game designer honestly and truly tried to come up with a good storyline which drew parallels between the social conflicts of the late 60s and early 70s in the US and the 90s-era militia movements and Janet Reno. Now, the storyline was still silly because the game designer didn't really know anything about the military and perhaps oversimplified certain social issues, but I'm sure he tried really hard to have a "deep" story.
I'd recommend Soldier of Fortune II. I've played through that game dozens of times and I have never, ever gotten bored. It's just so fun and smooth to play that you can't get bored. At least, I never succeeded in getting bored. |

I get bored with video games in general in that sort of time period.....single player. I find computers usually make lousy opponents. I haven't played an CRPG in years upon years. If I want a story I'll sit down and read a book. I play games to have an impact and create, and computers handly that very poorly in an RPG sense. Which is why, coupled with social activity, I do my "roleplaying" P&P style. Not that a Shadowrun MMOG wouldn't be a festering pile of dung. Ironically this PVP FPS is the one form of a Shadowrun that I might play. |

FPS games can have a good story just like porno can have a good story. The problem is that people just don't try. Back in the 70s there was no such thing as video tape so porno was made on film. Like all film movies they were released in theaters because most people didnt have projectors at home. Then you actually has some good movies with good plots. The Opening of Misty Beethoven, released in 1975, was the Half-Life 2 of porno movies. But when video came up porn produces became lazy. They stopped bothering with good scripts and skilled actors because they could easily distribute massive numbers of movies via video when before they could only distribute a handfull of movies through dedicated porno theaters. Quality took a back seat to quanity. The same is unfortunatly true with FPS video games but there is hope. Games like Undying show us that ist is possible to make First Person Shooters with good plots. All you really need is good writers. |
