So, I just came home from GenCon SoCal, where not only did I pick up Cyberpirates and Smuggler Havens, my roommate for the duration was (I'm not kidding) a pirate. Random plug for Sade

So, naturally, I'll be running a pirate game. It'll be set in the Carib, because the Huk seems too bleak (yes, this is me, saying something is too bleak), and Africa seems a little too... cutthroat. I'd kill you all *far* to quickly.

So, we will be having a flamboyant, over the top, pirate game.

This time, I will not be limiting starting cash (although remember these are poeple desperate enough to risk their lives for money), but I will be asking for donations towards the crew again, so give generously. As usual, the guy who gives most gets the top spot, and there is the matter of buying a ship out of this.

Let's hear interest

Why don't I have those two books?!

*bash forehead off table*

I have an idea, kind of, and as such, once I get it in a firmer position I'll be throwing questions your way. Hope I don't sound like too much of an idiot asking things that should be basic for people who've read it.

"A pirate I was meant to be, trim the sails and roam the seas!"

I prefer magical character types, let me know the restrictions.

Now I have to decide what psychology (and thus magic style) would work...

Avail as usual, with the following exceptions: Cyber, Bio, etc. :7 Nautical stuff: 9 If the cyber also falls under nautical stuff: 9

BPs: 123. I prefer priority or sum-to-10, and those guys will get priority. I know it's stupid and irrational, but I don't have to be rational.

Oh, also, I will be counting the 'Ship' skill towards more than just driving the damn thing. It'll also cover everyday stuff on the ship. So, I recommend it.

Don't worry about purchasing a ship, I'll do it out of what's donated. Contacts for various supplies and in various ports will be *very* helpful.

And you don't need to have read either of the aforementioned books to play. There's nothing really rules-wise, so...

Don't worry about asking newb question. As a matter of fact, I encourage it.

I will remind anyone who is uncertain of what choices to make, that combat at sea has a chance of falling overboard and heavy armor can make those swimming TNs painful.

Sum to 10 is like, As are worth 4, Bs worth 3, Cs worth 2, Ds worth 1, and Es worth nothing, right? So, I can make a mundane human with race and magic at E, and then Attributes and Skills at B, and then Resources at A, or some mix thereof?

For Sum-2-10, A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1, and E is 0.

And, DH, you're talented enough that we can work something out with building that character.

Damn, It's too tempting to not play... *8-> Is there still room? I was thinking of a piloting rigger, mostly boat but possibly with a little drone for fun, either that or a seriously techie rigger... you the guy you rarely see in the daylight and then always covered in oil... *8-> If nothing a game were you've got to start yell "Arh! Jim lad!" *8->

On the character front I'll try and put something together this weekend... still stuck in germany with no books *8-< but will get it to you as soon as....

heh. Yeah, blitz, you can play either one, just remember to tone it down to starting character level. Oh, wait, wasn't one of them a magician of the physical path? If so, let's maybe not. Otherwise, go crazy.

Herald's the only one to have sent me a complete character and be approved. Anyone feel free to send me character concepts, or numbers, or anything. The thing of the day seems to be PMing my with info. If you really feel like mailing me, though, icedwarf at yahoo.com

Lindt, the numbers look solid, but you realize with gear like that, you'll sink to the bottom of the sea as soon as you fall overboard. Also, I intend to set you guys up with a ship, so what are you going to do with that Cigarette Hydrofoil once the game starts? I recommend getting rid of it and putting that money into the crew.

Few questions, I have a really bad memory.

1) How much is it to Dwaf-size something?

2) Would a peg-leg be considered nautical? :grinbig:

3) Are there options to make things more water-friendly (Say cyberware-wise)?

4) Feelings on created guns? (Cannon Companion, obviously)?

5) If you don't mind the self-created guns, how much would it be to seal a gun so it could fire underwater?

That's all for now.

Will the money we put in on the ship at least partially go for ship weapons? Also, can you be a bit more specific on what qualifies as nautical? Finally, what are the thoughts of everyone of getting something like a Yellowjacket autogyro?

Hoi, mates. I'm new to these forums, and wanted to get in on a game, so I was told this one was recruiting for players? Anybody wanna give a n00b a chance here? I'm very familiar with Shadowrun (6+ years of playing), and I think a pirate game would be a very unique twist? If so, let me know, I'm coming up with alot of cool character ideas.

To Dwarf-size things cost an extra 10%

Yeah, I'll consider a peg-leg nautical. Just cause I dig it.

I'm not sure if there are any options to make things water-proof, but add another 5% to its price, and we'll call it water-proofed.

I'll look at created guns, but no guarentees I'll accept them.

To make a gun that can be fired underwater, I think I'm going to have to triple the cost and hook it up to an air tank. I can hear you saying 'TRIPLE, that's crazy!" You're right, it *is* crazy. My reasoning for doing this is to make you guys be way more creative than that. Spearguns, gyrojet guns, etc. Be creative guys.

Blue, I noticed Yin is initiated. I'm morally opposed. Would you be upset if I said let's go with no on the initiation?

Grifter, of course I'm open to new players. I'm not a *complete* Ogre. Feel free to submit a character.

Voorhees, just because I *prefer* priority or sum-to-10 doesn't mean I'll dismiss points out of hand.

For anyone interested, I abandoned the idea of the hougan in favor of a "face" type of character. Figured we had plenty of magic and, apparently, plenty of muscle... so someone able to actually get us a good deal on our booty (not to mention to secure a sweet ship) was in order. He's also going to be quite the swordsman.

Thinking of one of my famous purists... the no cyber type... got a zen for Boarding Party types, being that it's something I aspire to do myself one day (Canadian Navy's boarding parties, the elite of the world)... Basically, as long as it follows the rules for *something*, it's all good. If you want a cutlass with the same stats and price as a fineblade, or mono-sword, or anything else, you're more or less good. If some else bases theirs on a katana, then it will just be different qualities and makes of cutlass. Feel free.

Large Mike-Aces. What Im service do you use? I'll send ya my character idea over it. As of right now, I'm thinking of being either a phys adept or a samurai. Since I'm kinda new to this, I'll just fill in for some muscle for the crew.

Do you still need players?
I read cyber pirates cover to cover last month, and then built a 6 man crew. I was gonna force them into my campaign as NPCs but if I could actually play one of them it would be a lot more fun :)
How 'bout a seal shifter? With demo?

As any of my players can tell you, I'm not a big fan of the 'fruity' character types. (Not my terminology, borrowed.) I'm a distinct non-fan of shifters, drakes, otaku, free spirits, cyberzombies and (usually) ghouls. So, you can submit one and hope that you have a cool enough character for it to pass, but it's not horribly likely.

And, if I were a seal, well, first I wouldn't be in the carib. Second, I would eat and bask in the sun all day, and maybe play with a ball. If I were a seal that could change shape to human, I'd do exactly the same thing. Maybe it's just me.

Grifter, I use MSN (large_mike_ca@hotmail.com).

Everyone else: Yes, I'm still accepting players. Send me crap until I make the OOC and IC threads. Do it! Do it now kids! Stick it to the man!

Well, guess what.

My character has 254835¥ to contribute to the gang. And thats after buying enough explosives to single-handedly destroy the Spanish Armada. Those things are ridiculously cheap.

Ah well.

About that 'enough explosives to single-handedly destroy the Spanish Armada'...

Actually, on second thought, keep the explosives. Your character is accepted as is.

I made a guy on the assumption that there was one. He's an orc mechanic/heavy weapons specialist. Goes by Greasy Louis. Mostly, he's Chewbaca looking for a Han :)

Assuming my character is accepted, Jas Laine Loren Mountjoy the XIV will be donating approximately 304,945¥ (possibly quite a bit more depending on how many Contacts I finally decide on) for the ship and crew. Most of that will be reflected in his ability to finagle a good deal at the many ports of the Caribbean more than a reflection of actual equipment or ship parts, as well as beguilling the most unsavory scallywags he can find to join our motley crew.

He's also invested in navigation and cartography gear, and has the skills to get us where we need to go.

Could you add the following things to my character sheet?

Cybereyes w/ low light system, and high powered Tool Laser

Thats less 1800¥, and .55 essence

Also add a level 3 Extended Volume system... .4 Bio Index, 25000¥ cost

And if Johnny's going to be the captain, I should probably fiddle with his skills and Background...

Currently he has no idea how to pilot the ship.

Alright, boys and girls, gather round on the story-time rug, because I'm about to tell you who made the cut.

Montjoy played by Dr. Funkenstein is plenty in. Also, at a donation of 304,945 :nuyen: he's fairly definatly in charge of this operation.
Iron Roger who should have the dark secret (name is actually Percy) flaw, is in.
Horatio Marley who's apparently a Shakespearian Rasta Wujen (only one of those things is true) is in.
Ziptide is in, even though I have nothing to say about him.
Johhny Mneum... err, Molotov is in, and for reference, came second in the donations. I'll leave it up to you guys on whether or not this makes him first mate.

Blitz, Yin and Yang are still welcome, if you can get me the character sheets for both before I finish making the ship and the OOC and IC threads.

Good. I would've hated being the captain. First mate, I might enjoy.

I also firmly believe that the name Johnny, followed by almost anything, sounds really cool. Try it out.

Can you give us any kind of hint as to what sort of a vessel you're going to be piecing together for us? I was toying around with a few builds just to see what we might get earlier today, and for ~750,000ish¥ and the Used Vehicle quality factor... just wow. :D

Actually, as for the ship itself, I have a thing.

You see, I firmly believe that a ship should fit its' crew perfectly. So, you have 24 hours to give me suggestions on what you'd like to see on the ship, and then I'll build her. And then someone has to name her. I think this should be the captains' job.

24 hours (or less). Go.

Ack! I'll ponder a name then toss a few up to see what everyone else thinks. If anyone else has some ideas, please share -- I suck at names. :D

As for the ship, I think either one large Ship-classification one (with a Hull and Bullwark rating) or several smaller ones (one or two Yacht-based "command" ships with Speedboats and Sports Cruisers -- maybe even Water Scooters -- as attack vessels/back-up) would be best. Since we'd be a single target with the former, it needs to be something strong enough to handle focused concentration of fire. But with the latter, we could spread out and come at other vessels in all directions. I'd prefer the latter, but... whatever works. :)

For "accessories," I'm pretty open for anything. I'd like the ship to be fast first, a high Signature second, and lots of armaments third. Maybe a turret for everyone who can handle one (ie, anyone who has Gunnery), and several defensive measures (like Smoke Projectors). Armor is important -- at least enough to stop most "small arms" if possible -- but our goal will likely to be to move in quick, ravage the opposition, and get away just as quickly. Prolonged battles aren't for us. I haven't read up on ramming options, but some kind of "hook onto the other ship"-style ram would be pretty appropriate, too, I'd imagine.

Oh, and hydrofoils are just kick ass. :D

More ideas to come as they form... and stuff.

:P

In any case, I'm about to go to bed but I thought I'd throw a few names I've been tinkering around for the last hour or so to see what you guys think. If nothing else, maybe they'll inspire some good suggestions. :)

The Bleeding Wench (hey, pirates can be a bitch, too)
The Immaculate Conception
The Kingston Dove
The Midnight Star
The Popped Cherry ( :D )
The Saucy Strumpet

Not the greatest, I know.

Oh, while we're hashing out those ideas, I figured I'd bring up crew positions up, too. Based upon Large Mike's comments, I'm assuming that Mountjoy is "stuck" ;) with the position of Captain, but we still have a few other positions that need to be filled. Below is a list I pulled straight out of my memory, so if it's not entirely accurate... well, get over it. :D Note that since Mountjoy is also probably the best (if not the only) qualified Navigator in the group, we can go ahead and assume that he's filling that position, too, unless someone is superbly qualified for the job.

That said, here's the list of positions (listed in command order) and what their job(s) are.

First Mate: The first mate is the second-in-command who's responsible for making sure everyone else (sans the captain) is doing their job and makes sure any orders the captain gives are followed properly and efficiently. When the captain's not around or off-ship, they're in charge. This position is usually filled by a "muscle" type, but a muscle type with brains and charisma. They're also responsible for keeping the crew in check in general, and for securing replacements whenever any men are lost (at least until the captain has a chance to look them over).

Quartermaster: The quartermaster's job is to acquire any day-to-day goods (mostly things like food, water, conjuring materials, and other crew-related supplies) and they're also responsible for keeping track of the cargo. They're usually responsible for taking care of harbormasters and that sort of thing, too, but this can be delegated to someone else if desired. If no one takes this position, it'll be delegated to the First Mate's duties as that's how it was generally handled on privateering vessels anyway (if memory serves).

Sargeant-at-Arms: The sargeant-at-arms is responsible for boarding/hunting parties and defending the ship's crew when under attack, either mundanely or magically. Think of them as the four star general of the crew to the captain's presidency, but only during a battle where the crew faces off against another crew. Otherwise, the first mate and quartermaster "outranks" them.

Master Gunner: While the sargeant-at-arms has full command of the crew during a battle, the master gunner's job is pretty much self-explainatory. They're responsible for the ship's guns and ammunition stores as well as commanding the gunners during a battle. The master gunner is also responsible for securing ammunition for the crew while in port, though he can easily assign this task to someone else. The master gunner outranks the sargeant-at-arms when it comes to gunnery and ship-to-ship combat, including long-range magical attacks.

Boatswain: The boatswain is responsible for the ship's maintenance and upkeep, including fuel concerns. Note that this is for the actual ship's maintenance, not onboard weapons or anything else. Obtaining supplies can be the boatswain job or he can delegate it to someone else as appropriate (usually the quatermaster). The boatswain also has dominant command over any crewmembers who don't outrank them and who aren't soldiers.

Pilot: The pilot's job is pretty much self-explanatory as well. They drive the ship. If a rigger, they're also responsible for ship-to-ship and ship-to-land communications and electronic warfare. If not, that task falls to the first mate or captain as appropriate. Although they're the lowest rank of the major positions, the pilot only takes orders from the captain, navigator, and first mate. If the ship features any remote weapons that the rigger-pilot can man, the master gunner can give them orders, too.

I believe that's about it. Anyone who doesn't snag one of these positions will just be assumed to be secondary mates. You'll still outrank the NPC crew for the most part, but that's about it.

If you want one of these positions, jump up and state what you feel qualifies your character for the job (if you have the appropriate skills, list your rating along with the skill if you don't mind sharing). If any positions are left open by the time the game starts, the captain'll just assign them to the best of my understanding of your characters.

Johnny can be First Mate, nevermind that he is probably unqualified for it...

His skills lie in diving, and blowing shit up. Perhaps in this brave new world of the 2060s, theres a new job for him. Also, hes a crackshot with a Gyrojet pistol.

Ziptide would probably be part of the senior bridge crew (since he has a good ship skill), as well as being a leader in boarding parties (he's a sorcerer, as well as a good shot with a gyrojet pistol).

As for the ship, Zip would probably prefer his own cabin to a communal berth - doesn't have to be big, but he IS a higher-ranking part of the crew - and an actual place for a shamanic lodge would also be very useful. He will probably ward a few areas of the ship, but warding the entire ship would be too much work. It would be good to have at least one smaller boat as well as the main ship, for boarding other vessels, going ashore, etc. Ziptide has the motorboat skill as well as the ship skill.

I'm nearly done with my drone rigger type. He can handle most of the more dull and menial tasks of repair/maintenance with the few drones he has not devoted to combat. If wanted, he can be the pilot too. Just tell me so I can shuffle some skill points around. He's also a nasty bugger in combat dominating the air, water, and ship with different drones. He's got 2 microskimmers that can go underwater and clean up any threats there, 2 rotodrones for various things like fast response aid in special places, and 2 Steel Lynx's for ship defense.

Maybe Horatio should be in charge of managing supplies, catalog will make it easy to see what we have. He's not bad at haggling (Bargain 6), but doesn't have a horde of contacts either.

All right, so far we have...

Captain & Navigator: Mountjoy.
First Mate: Johnny Molotov.
Quartermaster: Horatio Marley.
Sargeant-at-Arms: Ziptide.
Boatswain (and possibly Pilot): Cheese's drone rigger?

Hmm, lot's of M-names there. :D

Unless someone wishes to challenge those positions, that leaves the Master Gunner and Pilot positions open. Any other takers?
