It's cool to know there's a save & reload precedent in canon, even if its availability is off the charts. It reminds me of The Sixth Day.

Well, it might not be a true brain copy. Maybe the clone just has a few "preset" memories and will drop dead from neurological failure a few days after coming out of stasis...

Or maybe Villiers has acquired resleeving technology.

Well, it's been happening "by accident" (E-Ghosts), so it's only natural that at least one of the many people working on the technology manages to get it working. It is a cyberpunk trope, that people are trying to learn to upload people.

Sorry Sengir, couldn't help it. But yes, transhumanism is, at least in my opinion a valid evolution of a cyberpunk world.

I believe the term is usually called post-cyberpunk.

Sure, but in SR similar acts of hardcore tranhumanism (like cybermancy) come with huge and scary drawbacks. Brain uploading or transfers as run-of-the-mill procedure would just be too easy.

But how else can ya get multiple lives? Mario used mushrooms, but in SR brain software (memories and personality) uploads are needed.

It's so secret/rare that it took this kind of fishing to even turn up that it ever happened. That's hardly run-of-the-mill.

What I meant with that was a procedure that "just works", without a good chance of catastrophic failure significant drawbacks even if successful -- not monetary drawbacks, stuff like "you will die from a degenerative neural failure within a week, so better get that will signed fast".

If I were to design resleeving for SR, it would probably be a variant of cybermancy. Instead of binding the spirit/soul/stuff to a body which has become too different to hold that spirit, the spirit bound to a body which is different (although somewhat similar). Of course those little changes are enough to make the procedure even more complex, and because a cloned brain never develops quite like the original, it requires an IMS with a grade somewhere beyond epsilon.

If the cloned body has the same attributes (developed the same physique) and Active skills (stored in the cerebellum and basal ganglia) and it slots a PersonaFix of the master's past life / lives, complete with the Knowledge skills present at the time of last upload converted to KnowSoft format, then you'd have a pretty viable doppelgänger. Not quite a perfect save & reload as the Knowsofts and PersonaFix would be read-only, but still, not bad.

a four year lifespan would be standard to prevent too much independance from developing. Though soem units develop faster than that and become highly dangerous. I heard LS was putting together a special team to hunt them down.

Totally Awesome. I hear that they needed to pull a Specialist out of Retirement to head the team.

If you can get your hands on a copy of the first ed books, in the equipment section look at the pic of the hold out gun.

Here's a runner who knows just how to string a Johnson along! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grinbig.gif)
(Or a GM who knows exactly how to pace out an adventure!)

Hmm, this kinda gives me the idea how to access the Shiawase labs in LA. They're on a friggin' island, that's close enough.

Just wondering, how much can those events be considered canon? Because besides the whole brain upload thingy, if that stuff is canon Richard Villiers has been secretly replaced by a clone...
