Okay, so me and a friend got into a 'heated discussion' (read: blazing row) over this.
What, exactly, is the caliber of Shadowrun's guns? My friend insists that the Predator is a 10mm, I don't know where he got that figure. But it's the perrinial heavy pistol in Shadowrun, and 10mm just is not that impressive. I think that's roughly .39? I always figured that the Ares Predator was a big, heavy, LOUD thunderstick, like the Desert Eagle .50 AE. Only engineered with 100% less suck, and about 50% more BLAM. So what is it? The Ruger Super Warhawk is only 1 power code above the Pred. It's confusing, I figured that the Super Warhawk was like Magnum Research's "Biggest, Finest Revolover," which fires a full-on rifle round. |

I guess there's nobody at FanPro or WizKids or whoever who can just say "The Predator? Yeah, it's like .48 magnum or something like that. Pretty close to a 2060s idea of a Desert Eagle."

There is a 10mm version of the Predator IV, certainly. That's the caliber that's stamped on the side of the display model.
http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/6960/pr...edatoriv9xe.jpg I'd imagine that a pistol damage code covers a range of calibers. 9M includes 10mm. I'd imagine that 10M is more like the .50 AE or the .454 Casull. Also notice that the predator has a huge barrel. Longer barrel = higher muzzle velocity. |

Sometimes I think that Underground had something going for it, with it's 20mm and 30mm 'handguns'. It avoided all these stupid arguments.

But did it say what was the projectile weight and muzzle velocity of those guns?
Out of the 13 caliber choices available for the BFR, 5 were designed for rifles (and one for a shotgun). With common loadings, the ones designed for handguns are actually more powerful, topping out with the .500 S&W. |

At least they learned their lessons and get rid of weight for gear in SR4. ;) |

Given real life experience, I would think heavy pistols range from 10mm to .50 AE. The popular would probably .40 and .45 caliber.

Yea, because we all know in real life you don't have to worry about the weight of the gear you're carrying. ;) |

Now there's a game. I love Underground's gear books. As I recall, 25mm hit a nice sweet spot when it came to designing pistols. Almost usable by high end norms, controllable accuracy penalty, and a nice range. |

Not that we never worried about it, we just never bothered to track it in absolute terms. It's pretty easy to look at someone's character sheet and decide if they're encumbered or not. Lots of gear and no harness? Going for the awkward and heavy look, huh? Reduce your running multiplier, blah blah blah. We always winged it with crap like that. |

Personally, I admire a game line that has the strength to admit that "We've gone through 16 years and two companies, and we haven't been able to get gear weights right yet; at this point we should just stop trying, and leave it up to the individual GMs." |

No, it's because their gear weights were absolutely ridiculous. In many cases, the listed weights are over twice that of the listed equipments real-world equivalent. |

I disagree with admiration for that line of reasoning, but considering that I've never seen nor heard of an RPG weight system that doesn't suck I suppose I can't fault them for it. ~J |

I have never seen a gear weight list thats right. So honestly, removing then weight and just the GM saying "Yeah, those 3 assult cannons are way to much for your pasty white decker ass."

Just because you have a triggerless DNI dosen't mean you can be careless with your firearm. First, it won't fire unless your hand is on it, and it is drawn (IE: Not in contact with a holster.) Secondly, having a wireless DNI does not excuse you from firearms safety; in this case, do not point the weapon at anything you do not intend with deliberate thought to shoot.
