Yes, yes..

But did all this exist, in solid enough terms for shadowrunenrs to start using it, in 2021?

I wouldn't mind some of the tech leaps (well, other than teleportation) in 2060-2070. But by putting it near the beginning of the awakening.. they severely limit themselves.

I'm also worried about what fallout this means for the RPG. IE: Will the writers have to go back and use this storyline in 4th edition? Or elements of it?

IS the looking through walls done via thermo or is it flat out x-ray vision?

This one is using microwave (and obviously a very, very early concept development), the next-door neighbor to milliwave. I don't see any milliwave stuff handy, but i -think- it currently has limited applications of very short rang, non-destructive structural inspection. I wish i could find it. I know know that milliwave is used in place of optical and near-optical range laser ranging for situations where things like mist would interfere with the light beam.

Clearly I'm not the target market for this one.

Thank you Microsoft for saving me a several hundred dollars and a great deal of time.

My dad has worked on the non-technical side of see-through technology a la Total Recall for a decade, according to him they're really close to telling women the brand of their bras in the airports. By 2060 that tech should be awesome.

But wasn't this thread about video games?

YES! Because if this game didn't exist, they might've made a real RPG for the system.

You mean like Oblivion?

QUOTE (blakkie)

The Matrix and the astral space likely isn't in there because that would likely be quite hard to fit in the game both technically and from a gameplay POV. You can try call that laziness, but in the end it really dev resources that would need to be diverted from somewhere else.

Th matrix wouldn't be too difficult. I wouldn't expect "ooooooo" graphics so much as the ability to move from node to node and take control of security cameras and turrets. The former can be implimented with teleportation and statmods. The latter by whatever method they decide to use to take control of cameras and turrets. It has been done before.

The Astral plane would be several times easier. It is just no-clip mode more some glowing.

I've come to what I feel is a life-affirming decision about the Shadowrun video game.

It sucks, but I don't care. It should be expected, given the developer and their business model. It will capitalize on people who don't play the game, but played it or heard about it or whatever years ago. Especially the folks who played it in the 16-bit games, and never stepped into the PnP realm.

So, it's not like the game is going to alienate existing PnP players from the PnP. It may bring a few people to the PnP. They'll play it, and 90% of them will walk away. The remaining 10% will join the fold.

It cost WizKids nothing. The return might not be all they'd hoped for, but there will be a slight increase. There will be no decrease resulting from the game.

We win, Microsoft loses when the game is a crippling flop for a variety of reasons.

Where's the problem?

The problem is when Bethesda or BioWare don't pick it up and create a badass RPG out of Shadowrun because of the stink that pervades this game.

Plus, the expectation. Then again, they always said it would be a FPS.

You know what I find it most hilarious about this whole bitchfest? It's that now I can look at all of you in here complaining about the FPS who called us whiners when it came to SR4, and say, "So, how does it feel to have something you love get mangled beyond recognition by halfwits?"

I bet it feels pretty crappy.

Shit, I think this is hilarious. Between the SR fps and GTA IV I may actually get a 360.

The difference, SL James, is that SR4 at least was still using the same universe and tried to remain true to the game's faithful, storyline wise.

This insults every single SR fan out there. period.

This might turn out to be a half decent game. Resurrect spells? The things cause Essence Loss. I imagine once the mages figure that out, the spell will largely drop out of use. Noone would bother learning a spell that'll burn you out. Tree of Life "spell"? Spirit with Innate Spell (Heal).

The race information is annoying, but other than that...

I disagree. I don't think MS is insulting players of Shadowrun. I think they're completely disregarding them. That's not the same as insult. You take yourself too seriously.

It is said that in the gaming industry, the masses matter, but the core players (the hardcore) are whom the masses follow.

But yeah, I'm probably making too much of it. I wrote a letter expressing my distaste with MechAssault back in the day, and that turned out... alright.

2034 - On August 28, in Brazil, a force of Awakened beings and metahumans led by three great dragons, two of them identified as Hualpa and Sirrug, descends on the Amazon basin and seizes control of the city of Manaus. The army of the Amazon Awakened (as they come to be known) begin a systematic campaign of expansion from the Amazon Jungle. (Shadowrun Second Edition)

However, something on the game site gave me the impression that dragons weren't on the menu.

oh
my
God.

I've just gone through the game's website for the very first time. I did read any of the posts, to avoid any "contamination". I wanted to get my first impressions of the game in a totaly unbiased and uninfluenced way.

Now, I simply regret ever hearing about the game. I want to gouge my eyes out. Why lord! WHHHHYYYYYYY!!!!!

And they even made it worse: The game allows cross-platform play online. Xbox360 users will be able to play against PC users. That means there will be no difference in the look and feel of the console version and the PC version. :(

It didn't insult me, nor did it really surprise me much. It isn't what I envisioned, but I didn't envision anything that would be a great tribute to Shadowrun.

Whenever something you love (a game, a comic book, a Tolkien trilogy) crosses genres you have to expect it to turn out to be utter crap. Most of the time the thing gets mangled (especially in the conversion to movies, but frequently in other areas as well). Expecting it to turn to crap just means you're greatly surprised and ecstatic when it becomes something great (like Lord of the Rings extended on DVD).

It looks like we'll all need to upgrade our Windows OS before we play the game as well.. seeing as Windows Vista isn't even out yet, they better make it backwards compliant or they'll end up alienating a lot of gamers.
