Ork chicks look relatively hot because it's RPG art. There's a rule written somewhere that every female in every RPG picture is absolutely smokin' as a default.

Not true. 99% of ork females in SR art look like a mass of warts and puss. Remember the Street Shaman from SR3? Good lord, my eyes. My freaking eyes.

Also, tusks do not equal drooling. Elephants and walruses have tusks, and neither is known for drooling.

Not every female. The Troll Rat Shaman bears a strong resemblance to a bulldog - not in a good way.

The human Technomancer ain't no dish, either. She looks like she has some really awful plastic surgery.

I'd probably rule that the "ugly" orks and trolls seen so often are the result of bad healthcare and hard living. Take a walk through your local skid row (on second thought, don't actually do that), and you'll see some familiar faces. Drugs, exposure, age, bad diet...it's written all over their faces.

Your more cosmopolitan orks and trolls, like the Gunslinger adept, the Merc from SR3, or the Enforcer from SR4, are eating 3 (or more) square meals a day, living in an apartment, and probably using some skincare products.

Personally, I'd always interpeted the shorter lifespan as being for similar reasons, rather than overly rapid aging. After all, the troll lifespan is only about ten years short of the human worldwide lifespan...and it was listed at a time when Trolls were known for mostly living in the wilderness, and doing dangerous jobs (heavy industrial lifting, enforcers, shadowrunning). Consider how skewed the data for orks must be; most of them don't have SINs, a huge number of them died young during the Night of Rage, and the majority of them still live in slums where nobody's life expectancy goes too far past 30. Just sayin'.

I can tell you why orks and trolls and dwarves don't get no love.

It's simple, it's not fair, but it's true.

Do you want to shag an ork or a troll or a dwarf? Would you rather shag an elf or a human?

If you answered yes to the first or no to the second, you have some serious wierdness going on about you.

If you answered no to the first and yes to the second, you've hit it on the head. Sex. People write about and draw what they'd like to shag, most of the time.

Ofcourse, that's ultrasimplified, but it's basically true.

Hey, just because I've had fantasies about fucking one of my female PCs...

Lucifer Deck had Pita, an ork go ganger as one of the main characters.

dwarf women are usually portrayed as very busty.

The new book "Aftershock" features a whole team of metas (A troll, an ork, and two elves) with the troll playing to most prominent roll. So not all the books favor humans.

Sure, but that doesn't mean they drool. A human with an underbite problem drools because our skulls aren't built for that kind of thing. I imagine a humanoid for whom upward protruding tusks are a natural thing wouldn't constantly drool, seeing as constant drooling isn't really an adaptive feature (ergo, it would have bred out of orks and trolls).

This is also why the Gungslinger Adept's tusks, which are smaller, make a lot of sense.

Trolls could be pretty sexy, too. They've got tusks and horns. Calcium deposits in the dermis can be sexy, too.  The only problem is that I've never seen an official image of an sexy troll woman with feminine horns and sexy dermal deposits. Now, there was that one piece of Earthdawn fanart posted a while back, but I don't think that would count.

...gotta get a scan posted of Babydoll the troll face adept.

Hey, you should learn to appreciate the beauty in women of all metatypes!

That's why I want to make a cute 'n perky troll character someday. Her name will be Muffy, she'll be a former high school cheerleader, and she'll never be seen in anything but the latest cute-yet-practical fashions for the double-plus-sized woman. :D

EDIT: I admit that I have a special affinity for halflings - as well as kender, God help me - but because there are no halflings in SR, I naturally gravitate towards their closest equivalent. The only problem I would have with being a dwarf woman is that most dwarf men would likely have lots of facial hair, which I don't find attractive (bring on the bishies!). I doubt that many of them would be willing to sacrifice their beloved beards for the love of a woman, so the dating pool would sadly be quite low. :(

Although I do remember several dwarves being shown having facial hair there are pictures of clean-shaven dwarves as well in SR, so at least in my campaigns that old DnD carry-over is dead... *winks*

Funny you should mention that, I was kinda working on an NPC with this thread in mind. I built her as a starting PC, just to test out some ideas. I actually like the concept enough to maybe adapt it for a character, should I ever get the opportunity to play (GMs for SR are scarce in my neck of the woods). Critiques of the character or the stats are welcome.

One of my old players has you both beat by almost two years. Very funny, so I encourage you both to try it. I remember my friend "adopting" a hell-hound out of a corp kill zone. It never stopped trying to kill her, and she just referred to her unarmed combat actions as "petting."

Here's a female ork who's not half bad, for those trying to find such images. The comic is basically straight fantasy (with the odd bit of higher tech dropped in), not SR, but Melna is still an ork (not the girl in the title, that's Luna - she's human aside from the tusks).

Only shows her face, but anyone willing to read back a bit would see more of her.

LOL...so playing a troll mage is like trying to scratch a hellhound behind the ears? :D

I suspect it may be true, hence why I'm just using this for an NPC. Though there are things about it that I like...nice spell resistance, nice physical damage resistance, decent spell list, etc. I've never been so strapped for points building at 400BP though. 40BP for a race is harsh (but necessary).

Having not read the entire thread, do you think that a member of a particular metatype would be attracted to members of the same metatype most commonly? If they were all just attracted to elf women, you'd run out of the other types pretty quickly.

I play an ork in my game. I play him as a city-dweller who is used to being around all the races, and he can, on occasion, find merit in elf beauty, but is mostly interested in ork women.

Having said that, it's probably a lot like real life, where the media has a lot of influece to the point where we're we're actually turned away from healthy, child-bearing hips, and reasonable body-fat levels, and toward supermodels. I think staring at fabulous elves on bilboards can have an effect.

Isn't that like asking the same thing about dating within one's race/ethnicity now? Of course they would as a matter of necessity for procreation.

Possibly. I think most can agree that there are beautiful memebers of all races, but many (most?) of us find ourselves tending toward some more than others.

Last I heard, Indian women have won more world-wide beauty pageants than any other ethnicity.

The difference between a troll and a dwarf is a lot more than the difference between a Norwegian and an Australian Aboriginee.

I guess the point is that there seem to be two forces pulling toward reproduction- a biological attraction to certain features, and completely manufactured fashion trends. There's a balance somewhere between them. Both occur at the same time and neither wins.
