Bug city was excellent. Unfortunately I never got to do anything with it before it was swept away in cannon.

...that is why I still am running in SRIII. Nothing yet out there for 4th ed that I really like. Hong Kong, never been there, not interested. Seattle? I use the old (SRII) Sourcebook as gospel for the setting. Europe, SoE has it covered pretty well. I still also refer to the old London Sourcebook for UK colour.

Yeah - I have lots of very subjective ideas about what is going on - seems there are a lot of smart and talented people working really hard to make SR4 great. And goodness knows I buy all the books and play it enough.
But there is something about the SR1 and SR2 fluff that really kicks ass in my mind. I have a lot of ideas about why that might be, but they are mostly subjective speculation. Two thoughts I will venture - 1. There was a je ne sais quoi about Tom Dowd's work that I just haven't seen recaptured. 2. The three location books I cited as my faves, though I am sure they enjoyed great support from a variety of people, were all basically written (as far as I can read credits) by one key person each. I think there is something to be said for one work-one vision. Something about creation-by-committee, which seems to be a theme for SR4 books, that kind of saps the life out of things. Don't want to dis anyone - taken piece for piece, there is some fine work out there in my opinion - but with creative writing, I think it may sometimes be that the whole is less than the sum of the parts. |

I agree with you completely. I also think that the new books are generally very "dry" reading. In some parts I've read physics texts that where more interesting. Also the new edition takes itself way too seriously. Pull that stick out of... well you get the idea. I want my Nerps back and where's Bung gone to? |

We'll probably start a campaign in munich 2070. FanPro printed some decent (afaik mostly not translated) source books for germany, including "München Noir" (Munich Noir), afaik the only available SR4 sourcebook for germany. Personally, I normaly prefer UCAS and would really like to play in Hong Kong, but the GM (that's luckily not me) and my girlfriend prefer germany, so I don't have that much of a choice :-)
But somehow it feels strange to play in a place only a hundret miles south of your location... Ok, my girlfriend wanted to play in our hometown once, but it feels really strange to play in such a small town... |

Yeah, Irian, but then when the bar explodes, it's a bar you know. You can name the streets you drive down, the park where you meet the Johnson. And when you see it in your mind, everyone else sees the same thing you do. That can make for a cool game.

I agree with this. I think it's easier to write a location book as a single author too. I had a very enjoyable time writing Hong Kong for Runner Havens and I think it came out very well for it. I went in with a solid vision of what I wanted to do and every piece could contribute to that vision in some way. With multi-author works, it's sometimes hard to communicate to the other authors what you are trying to do, and sometimes they have their own spin, so the pieces don't flow together as well. |

I'm currently planning a game that will be based in Mogadishu, Somalia. I've read some interesting articles recently about the emerging anarchist society there, and I thought it'd be interesting to explore the direction a society like that would take in 60ish years.

I've been playing since around '98, and only this year have I begun to take advantage of google maps or similar tools for my games. I've realized that, really, Seattle is a very pretty, suburban city. It might be a little rainy, but overall it's well off, ethnically fairly white, spacious and green. It's depressing trying to find appropriate locales for my runs using google maps. I'm thinking I'll just bring my game over to a real distopian city like beautiful Balmer, Philly or Detroit.

But somehow it doesn't feel "Shadowrun". It feels to much today. If I played World of Darkness or something else based today, ok, but for Shadowrun I have to add to many things... |

True dat. That's why I don't run SR in Jax. I've run too and played too many WoD games there. |

I am running games for two "groups", actually two pools of runners who all know each other and play crossovers ocasionally.
One of the groups is based in Seattle, but they have been working abroad a lot lately and so they have finished single runs in Amazonia, Beirut, Athabaskan Council, Guyana, Swaziland, Yucatán and Tenochtitlán. Now they are in for a couple of Seattle based runs and then it's Europe or Russia, I think. The other group is based in Tenochtitlán, and I must say the setting is great fun, I hope they do it justice and finally publish SoLA, I, of course, have meanwhile implemented my own ideas, but a book would be nice. Previous group was running in Boston, but somehow ended up MIA or replaced by newer flesh (and chrome) And then I have been Gming since 1993, so I can't tell, but I remember some runs in TT which were very exciting. Also one group who had made all oriental characters (by coincidence) and ended up playing in HK and Japan. Great fun, but I am getting nostalgic. I am thinkiing also about a future campaign in Merseysprawl or Metropole, but that would have to wait until at least next year... Mmm Excellent thread! Cheers, Max |

How's it going Rob, How's Trish?
BTW all, I've played in Nightlifes New Orleans game. Was very fun! Nightlife, if you haven't looked over it yet, SR4 is worthy. -Donk aka Eric the Dread0395 |

Not really. I just believe strongly in human stuborness. :) They'll get their act together one of these days. Besides, the area is centrally located to Aztlan, the CAS, and the Caribbean. And, if I run out of ideas involving voodoo, Catholisim, and woogidies for them to play with, I can always have them interact with the Triangle. I believe I've tracked down Smugglers Haven and CyberPirates, so tonight I'll get to see what actual SR source material gets to say on the area. Nightlife, you ran a NO game? What is your take on the area & how it was rebuilt? |

Speaking of NO, I also seem to recall a two-part adventure in Challenge (?) magazine way back in the 2nd edition days. You might try to find something on line about that.
