I work as an election judge. I can assure people that, at least in my state, those felony convictions only have right to complain if they're too lazy to lie (or cheat or whatever). Slackers. On the flip side, do they even bother with elections in Shadowrun? I mean, if you're in Renraku, I'm sure the arcology has all sorts of giant adverts for their politician of choice, and can give incentives if he wins (they're extraterritorial, after all). And basically all of the big corps are going to support a select few people. So really, why even bother? Megacorp board members are elected just as corporation board members are elected today. Of course, only shareholders get to vote and they have one vote for every share they possess. |

A third interesting source which I read is naturally Al Jazeera. The level of depth varies and neutrality is not always perfect. Good to read and keep an eye on, though. Now THIS I recognize as humor... taking Al Jazeera seriously.. HAHAHAHHA... QUOTE (hyzmarca) Megacorp board members are elected just as corporation board members are elected today. And citizens of a corporation with extra-territoriality will not get to vote in governmental elections, unless they hold dual citizenship.

It sounds odd that if I live on Seattle soil, but happen to be an accountant for Renraku, that I lose my right to vote for things like governor. Plus, doesn't that mean that every stuffer shack employee can't vote either? How many people are left with the right to vote after you eliminate all megacorp employees and all SINless? |

I'm not. There is no reason to have such a requirement. There was a time when people trusted each other. There was a time when all you needed to do was say ho you were and that was that. There was a time when you could go about your business without the government constantly poking its fingers in your ass. The requirement of ID to exercise fundamental liberties is just one minor symptom of this. She has options, of course, easy ones. She could borrow some money from a friend, go down to kinkos, and make herself a new driver's license. While she's at it she could also print out FBI, DEA, CIA, and Homeland security IDs that way she could do things like flash an ID, say "I'm commandeering your car for official business", and steal a hopefully nice car. IDs make people complacent and easily duped. People trust IDs. And it is very easy to make a fake one. All you need is a color printer and some plastic cards. Even modern "security features" such as holographic foil can be duplicated with a little applied science. The birth certificate is also fun, since it is effectively a useless document. There is no way to tie a birth certificate to an individual so one can simply obtain someone else's birth certificate and get an official state ID in that person's name. Not very smart are ya? There'd be nothing keeping 20 million NON CITIZENS from deciding an entire election. The reasons for verifying people are who they claim to be are many and varied. From bank accounts to voting rights to taxes to verfication of education and expertise. "No I'm not really a surgeon, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!" I suppose you'd also like it if you could just sign your name with an "X"? Lol I too would love it if everyone trusted one another. Unfortunately that's not the world we live in anymore. |

Perhaps that is not the world you live in anymore, but when I go to vote at an election, I tell them my name, they cross it off in the book they have in front of them, I vote and I leave. And guess what? At no point - to my knowledge - has there ever been a scandal about rigging votes or impersonation or miscounts. Of course, I have to register to vote, but all I have to do for that is to provide my name, date of birth and current residence - I can do it via post. The state of affairs in the United States does not reflect the entire world - most people in first world countries do still trust each other, on a basic level. |
