Recruiting : To Be Determined, Style of Game to be determined Options

We're leaving home tomorrow (3 July) to drive to our cottage, 3500 km away. (Yeah... Canadians are crazy, but the dogs hate flying.) I will try to connect and get up to date at least once a day from friends', relatives', or motel connections. We should be there, even with fun detours, by the 7th or the 8th, at which time we should have a stable internet connection.

So, the vignette developed into a bit of a short story, incorporating Jerry's contact screamsheet in narrative form. (Not to be confuse with POG FORM!) Read at your own risk, I offer no guarantees or character sheets. Unless you're DireRadiant, in which case, feel free to pester me for a sheet. A little pressure helps me stop fussing over meaningless details and post shit.

- A Day in Orange Grove -

The music of the tenement pulsated through the structure. A smooth, steady beat as the generators in the basement turned round and round. As the sun peeked over the horizon, the music climaxed with a shudder and a sigh. The soul of the tenement stirred from their beds. A new day had begun in Orange Grove.

Huh, morning already? Something's up with that generator, gotta touch base with Mike again. Jerry fumbled for his glasses and link without opening his eyes. They'd be fully charged by now, no sense straining the solar cells on the roof any more than necessary. Not that two PAN devices drew much current compared to the neighbors' trid projectors and refrigerators, but every little bit counts. He tried to check the news, but was met with a curt "No Signal" from his link. Damn satellite relay's on the fritz, too. Hope Mike didn't have plans today.

Jerry gathered the rest of his gear and headed out. No need to lock the door, any neighbors who were ungrateful enough to let his one-room apartment get broken into didn't live here anymore. Or so he hoped. You can never be 100% sure with breeders below the poverty line. Still, you can either be paranoid or accomplish something with your life, so down to the street he went, sword and SMG secured beneath his coat. The sidewalk had a welcoming committee ready and waiting. A lanky human led a group of lowlifes smoking on the front stoop. "Hey, ya stinkin' trog, the 'ells yer business around these parts?" He waved a lead pipe with a pocketknife tied to the end at the ork as he exited the building.

"Dis mah turf, ya round-eared puke. Fack off 'afore I redecorate your face!" Jerry pulled his "Choppa," a monofilament sword that had seen better days, but was still sharp enough to cut stainless steel armor plates if need be. He raised his weapon overhead and charged down the stairs at the indignant human.

The pipe rose to meet the blade, steel clashed on rusted iron, and the two men stared each other in the left eye for a breathtaking second. Then they simultaneously clapped their offhands on each others' shoulders. "G'mornin' Jerry." "G'mornin' Mike." One of the human's lackeys, an elf not a day older than seventeen, took a step back and several deep breaths. The troll and two humans standing nearby shared a hearty laugh at his expense. Jerry eyed the youngling, "new recruit?"

Mike favored the sharp-ear with a glance over his shoulder. "Yeah, another street tough willing to lend a fist for The Good Fight. He's harmless, but his heart is in the right place." Jerry never knew where Mike managed to find so many elves this deep in 'Crush territory, but he found it hard to argue with the way they tended to handle their guns. "Any news on the home front?"

Jerry sighed. "Yeah. Big Bertha's out of touch, and that generator's gonna need some love soon. I couldn't get to sleep last night, the hum was all wrong."

Mike shook his head as he hooked the pipe onto his belt and pulled up some overcomplicated AR screen, tapping his fingers on thin air. "Well, the generator has needed a new belt for a while now, I've got one in my shop waiting for a symptom. The dish should be good for a few weeks, though. Think someone's messing with you again?" Jerry just sheathed his blade in response. "Whatever, man. I'll check it out. Anything else on my plate today?"

"Nah, Mikey. You know I trust you." Not that Jerry had a choice. Nobody else for three blocks around knew a datajack from their hoop, and for all of Mike's posturing, he got the job done; the first time, EVERY time. "I got some Red Work to take care of today, think you can hold the fort 'til the panels shift?"

Mike snapped a cringe-worthy 19th century soviet salute. "I gotcha covered, Comrade Leader!" He pointed at one of the humans and the elf, "you two, watch the north street." He turned toward the troll and other human, "you two got the south. I'll be busy, so don't call me unless it matters." The kids scattered, Mike went inside, and Jerry mounted his chopper.

Sean's favorite meetup took Jerry farther away from his block than he liked, but bygones would be bygones, and despite how much the tenement kicked to the Crimson Crush every month, they couldn't afford to alienate Jerry's old lieutenant. The whole block would be ashes without Sean's support. Jerry parked his bike on the east side of the ruins and walked the long way around. There were plenty of morning hours left to soak up sunlight, and fuel cells didn't grow on trees, let alone concrete superstructures. "Jem! I thought you weren't coming!" Sean's disgusting smirk never left his face, not even when it was bloodied and bruised beyond recognition.

Jerry just scowled. "Shut up, Sarge. You know I care more about this asphalt than you do about your own dick." Sean was downright wizened for an ork, but still acted like a middle school bully. Jerry allowed himself to wonder how Sean hadn't been shivved by his own men yet for all of two seconds.

"Don't call me 'Sarge,' tusker. I served my time, and I been out for years. Don't call me no 'Sarge.' " Sean liked to toss around "tusker" like his Ares military service made his some sort of Orksploitation Simstar. Truth was, he barely survived basic training and got a field promotion to replace his fallen squad leader on the sole grounds of his guts. Another week of action against Horizon, and he was booted out for "conduct unbecoming an officer." Evidently, corps felt entitled to the same dishonors as government militaries, despite having no such obligations to the civilians they fought for. Luckily for Sean, he had friends in low places, and his skills and attitude rocketed him up the ranks of the Crimson Crush. "The pawn shop on 163rd St. is refusing to pay protection. He's got a few Yak goons to match ours, so I need you to handle it." Sean produced a tarnished credstick from his jacket pocket. "Your usual fee for such services still good enough, tusker?"

Jerry's scowl deepened. "Man, I'm not just muscle. I've got obligations aside from your thieving and thuggery." He took the stick, though. Whatever Mike needed to fix the satellite link, it wasn't going to be free. Sean's smirk didn't fade as Jerry stormed out of the destroyed warehouse.

...

If the Yakuza were actively guarding against the Crush, they might be making a serious move. No sense being hasty when dealing with gun runners. Doc Corsetto might have heard something, so Jerry rode over to her clinic. It was a long ride through bumpy roads, but her info was always good, and those who made a living by selling guns tended to get shot up a lot. Jerry ignored the philosophical implications as he rolled up in front of the doors. The street had emergency access AROs guarding the entryway, but Corsetto had long since alienated DocWagon, so the odds of an ambulance needing the space was next to nil. The occasional CrashCart might show up, but they tended to have good enough riggers to avoid a bike. Jerry marched through the manual door (the automatic one never opened fast enough, and broke his stride) into the spartan reception area. Three people were waiting, an elf with a pair of troll-sized cyberarms, and a human couple. One was clutching a bandage to his leg, the other spluttering and fawning over the first. Jerry approached the anthrodrone behind the desk.

"Good morning, Mr. Lauren, does your hand feel okay?" The ridiculous thing was supposed to greet all previous customers with something related to their records, but the only 'ware Jerry had on file was his cyberhand. The others were compensation for Jerry's help with Corsetto's condition, and had disappeared from the datatrail.

"Just fine, Jessica." He paused to put the proper inflection on his urgent codephrase. "Inform the good doctor that Jeremy desires an audience." Corsetto had her reasons for making Jerry talk like an eastern European aristocrat, and Jerry was okay with that, because she was a damn good doctor. He leaned against the wall near the entryway and waited.

Exactly thirty five seconds later, a message popped up on Jerry's AR: "Exam room 3." The noisy human shot him a dirty look as he passed by, but neither the man nor the maglocked, reinforced door obstructed him. Dr. Corsetto was waiting inside when he got there. "Jerry! You look well, but troubled."

Jerry locked the door behind him, then blocked it with his shoulder as he responded. "The wires are getting twitchy again, but today I need your ears, not your hands." Corsetto waved her invisible clipboard away and settled onto the corner of the examination table. "The Yakuza are back in town. Have you heard anything?"

Corsetto frowned at the mention of the gang. "I've had several asian fellows through here recently. I asked them the usual questions."

None.

"Their wounds did plenty of talking. Bats and 12-gauge slugs."

The Crush's favorite toys. "You think something's going down?"

Corsetto shrugged. "It's too soon to say based on a few gunshot wounds, but these were just street punks. Just the flavor of the weak."

Jerry visibly relaxed. "That's a relief. I've seen what the Yaks do to the neighborhoods they conquer. It'd be the end of the Grove. So, how about you? You've got some good color today, business been good?" Normally, Jerry wouldn't tease Corsetto about her infection, but her cheeks looked downright PINK. The effect was almost ridiculous.

She laughed, her false canines looked better than usual, too. "Evo came out with a new model of nanopaste masks. Holds for a full week without touch-ups, but it looks a bit silly the first day you wear it. You should check it out, might come in handy if you ever do another job that costs you a hand."

Jerry just shook his head as he stood away from the door. "Thanks for the heads-up, but I like my disguises disposable and my jobs non-amputating. Shoot straight, omae." As he strolled through the hallways, he pinged his Pathfinder to roll itself around to the alleyway. The 'Star had given him a harsh eye at the checkpoint on the way out of the Z-Zone, so breaking the datatrail was a good idea. He mounted up, and plotted a course back that avoided I-202. The law didn't extend farther than it could throw a roll of caution tape from the interstate, but that was far enough to cause trouble for those on the wrong side of the wageslave equasion.

...

Two StufferShack power bars and an hour's drive later, Jerry had the pawn broker against the back wall of his own establishment. "So, like I said, the Crush doesn't appreciate being two-timed. Now those three Japs got off easy, a little cosmetic surgery will cover those scars in this wonderful age we live in. You, on the other hand, have a lot more to lose than your pretty cheekbones." Jerry waggled his "Choppa" under the dwarf's eyes, the Yakuza blood still running fresh down the sharp side. The poor schmucks hadn't even had a chance to draw down against him. "Slugga" was still in its holster. The kids might survive, if they had the sense to buy EMS bracelets. It'd take a few hours for them to bleed out, and even the local Tamanous collectors would be here before then.

The stout shopkeep held his bladder, though. "Look, I'm just trying to put food on the table. You've apparently settled out with these drekheads, so just make sure you're the first one here for my security bill next week."

That was close enough for government work, so it was close enough for Jerry. He wiped his blade on a nearby rag and sheathed it. "You just make sure the collector's got pointy teeth and you won't be seeing me again." The sun glinted off a broken window across the street as Jerry mounted up yet again. Time to check in on Mikey. Hope the damage isn't too bad. Smoke poured, an engine roared, and 163rd streer was quiet once more.

...

"Well, like I said, the belt's been ready to go for ages, so no worries tonight. The dish, on the other hand, did the virtual equivalent of blowing a fuse. I need 500 yen to pry the part from my junker's hands." Mike had the grease stains on his elbows to prove fixing the generator, but Dunkie only knew what was wrong with the uplink. Fact was, nobody else would even look at the thing, so the block was either going to pay up or find a new pirate line.

"Fine, here. Got a timetable?" Jerry held back a scowl as he tossed a grimy credstick to Mike. The day might come up in the black if nothing else went wrong.

"An hour, tops. My boy's reliable, he just don't work for free, you know?" Mike delivered his usual tirade with a straight face as he stepped behind his cronies. The kid was good, but had the confidence of a wet housecat.

...

Sure enough, 55 minutes later, Jerry's newsfeed came to life again. The lead story was a bunch of thugs suspected to be Yakuza members being hauled in for questioning in a massive shootout on the border of Redmond and Snohomish. Good old Lone Star, always there to take credit for other people cleaning up messes. On a lighter note, Ingram stock was up 2%, so Jerry was all of $0.75 richer than yesterday. Always a good idea to invest in the people you buy bullets from. After all, their tide rises and falls with yours. Jerry celebrated with a soyburger that he grilled on the generator's radiator. He used the good Cheez Whiz, and cooking with real heat always sealed the juices better than microwaves ever could.

Half a bite later, Jerry's link was ringing again. The water line on the 7th floor had burst again. Hopefully, Mike was still sober enough to answer his line, he refused to give Jerry the commcode of his brother, the plumber. A superintendent's job is never done.

Speaking of fake SINs, I would like to lodge a request for the use of the alternate resolution system discussed in one of the threads on this forum. the one where the scanner rolls ratingx2 dice at a threshold of the fake SIN's rating.



Otherwise a rating 4 fake sin has a 6.5% chance of failing when checked by the local stuffer shack. (rating 1 checker) With the system as written in the book, it takes longer to find a rating 6 fake SIN (availability 18) than said rating 6 fake SIN will last in normal life (where it gets checked several dozen times a day by rating 1 and 2 scanners).



I'd just prefer that a false ID that costs (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nuyen.gif) 4K have an MTBF of more than 10 rating 1 checks.

The alternate resolution is system is the standard system where the GM, that's me, is simply not going to bother making a SIN check when you go to the Stuffer Shack.

Just like we aren't going to roll Pilot Ground checks when you open your car door.

You paid good nuyen for that Fake SIN, you are going to get your Nuyen worth out of it.

Background & Appearance

Background
Ozu Takagi was born in 1992 in California USA, as it then was. He had an ordinary and happy childhood, settling into life as a Renraku employee straight out of corp school. Before long he had a wife and 2 daughters, and was living a comfortable existence in Chicago. He worked as a marketing exec, which by coincidence led to him learning a few secrets Renraku never wants revealed.

The bug incident of 2056 changed everything when his wife and daughters were killed in an attempted evac. A roach spirit named Isabella took them hostage before her hideout was ultimately firebombed by an Ares paramilitary team. Ozu himself was left for dead, but rescued and revived by a NAN child named Becca Owlheart.

Over a course of weeks, Wolf came to Ozu in his dreams, awakening him to his true calling and saving him from a desperate spiral into madness. This initial awakening is the only time Wolf has communicated with him directly - ever since, his totem has provided guidance only through signs and portents. The old man suffers a terrible sadness, but is fortified by hard drinking, his hatred of bugs and his calling to destroy malevolent magical threats, wherever they might be. Upon learning that Ozu was alive, his former corp master issued an immediate black ops bounty on him (wanted: alive).

Ozu adopted the runner handle Omen about 10 years ago. He moved to Seattle following Isabella’s scent and continues his secret search for her in the world’s most notorious ‘plex. He considers it his duty to hunt and destroy all manner of malign spirits and paranormal threats, but pays the bills with typical runner work, mostly arcane support for whatever jobs his flexible morals, and Wolf, permits. His prior Johnsons have largely been individual one offs, but he has also worked for the yaks a few times. Omen keeps a small apartment in Redmond: two and a half bedrooms, lockup garage, nothing fancy. He maintains a small medicine lodge there.


Appearance
Ozu is now 78 years old, and it shows. His tall frame is rail thin and weather beaten, and any muscle and finesse from his youth is long gone. Despite these frailties, his body is resilient and iron-tough, and the old man exhibits an uncanny sixth sense which helps him avoid danger*.

Omen’s almond shaped brown eyes reflect his father’s Japanese heritage. He has his mother’s olive skin and generous smile, framed by a trimmed silver beard streaked with black. He has short, almost buzz cut silver hair. Omen carries an ancient mahogany walking cane, topped with an ivory wolf paw motif and lined with black runes. He typically wears a long white shirt, thick black pants and dark blue longcoat, an old white scarf trailing his neck. He wears a bracelet of petite, yellowed animal bones on his left forearm. Omen smokes old style tobacco leaf from cigarettes he rolls himself. Like many men over 75, he smells of pipe-weed, old spice and hardened liquor.

If I've purchased a Pilot 5 program, can I load that up onto any drone/vehicle, or do I need to purchase separate Pilots for each drone? This stuff is expensive ^_^ Thank ya

The GM may rule differently, but as per RAW, a pilot program is for a specific model of drone, and it may only be loaded onto a single drone at a time. You can get around this by getting a pirated version, but the pirated version of a pilot program loses one rating point per month, and it's still limited to a specific model of drone. (so you could put it on multiple steel lynx drones, but not on a steel lynx and a fly spy.)

Don't forget that pilot programs are R X 3 availability. Starting availability is 12.

You won't be able to do the cracking copy protection during chargen, only after the game starts, in which case it will take a bit of your time.

My character concept would be Richard Descarnado, an adept of the Warrior's Way, Richard a former UCAS Army Calvary Armorer unable to retain his position after the political backlash of exposing his commanding officer for the illegal sale of military-grade power suits turned to corporate security work. After working for several major corporate employers he settled for Ares Macrotechnology as a sectional security supervisor but due to his exhaustive costs incurred by his armory side-projects and illegal weapons acquisitions he has turned to shadow-running to supplement his meager corporate salary.

I'm perfectly content with a base-line 400BP game but I'd go with a 450, or even 500 BP game. I'm very flexible and willing to do anything.
