Toturi: At some point, if I can figure out how, we'll have a place to store backgrounds/20Qs and character sheets (and keep the latter updated) off of Dumpshock (and off of my computer). As well as possibly other stuff. I don't really want to use Wikia because I can't figure out formatting and stuff for wikis. Suggestions welcome, as is help turning suggestions into reality, preferably with some expeditiousness.

For everybody: Horvagab has surfaced, offering a possible mage, though I've only seen the beginnings of a concept. If he can find the time to work fleet-footedly on it, he may be joining you along with Edana's character (who is done; Edana, you're welcome to post the character to this thread for your comrades' perusal, and otherwise say hi) at Cape May. Otherwise, he'll join you after the first mission. Horvagab, you're welcome to introduce yourself on this thread and ask questions of your fellow players, leaving posting of character til after you've had it approved by me.

I found a good point to start characterization for this campaign is, "Why would Roberts want to hire her?"

I'll probably be stealing a little from Cherry, in the sense that Miho-chan (preliminary name for now) was sent by the Neo-Japanese Navy to help. And she was sent because she's a dirty nonhuman, and Roberts may have been asked to play nice. She's also a dedicated magic support, not much of an actual combatant, but she knows her stuff when going against magical threats. At least I hope (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif) .

Maybe - and I'm grasping a little here - Aztlan has become enough of a bother to Japan that they want to do something, and are considering an extremely slow opening of relations, starting with sending an unofficial person to an unofficial program, unofficially. Alternatively, your char could have been drummed out of the IJN for some reason (like being an elf woman), and Roberts had his ear sufficiently to the ground to hear about it. I'm also unsure about metas being allowed in the Japanese military (they seem to be one of the few places were even being an elf isn't okay), and also about women. SR Japan always struck me as a caricature of WWII Japan, right down to the rampant sexism, racism, and xenophobia.

Yeah, that might be a problem. Two solutions come to mind: new imperial policy, or the human-looking advantage (which I was thinking of earlier, but wasn't sure), and she was kicked out because her being an elf.

Also, Israel and the US have a history of military cooperation. So do Japan and the US, but I think that went out the window when Japan began its neo-imperialist dealy.\

Biography

Born 3 April 2050 in Natal, Amazonia, Eliana Madelena Tavares was always fond of the ocean. Her mother was young and single when Eliana was born, the product of a short affair with a foreign sailor. Much of her mother's time was spent getting the best she could for her daughter.

Eliana's formative years saw her through the local school system, where she never really excelled, but didn't lag behind either. She was smart enough to do well, but her heart wasn't in the schooling. Her free time was spent at the beaches or down at the port watching the ships come and go. By the time she was 14 she knew she wanted to be a sailor. By 16, she'd managed to convince her mother to let her look for a position on a ship.

Not many captains are keen on having such a young woman on board, but eventually she managed to convince one Juan Gutierrez that she would do absolutely anything to be given the chance, even cook (in spite of her being a fairly terrible cook). As captain of a smuggling ship, his prospects were a bit slim, and an eager and able body was a godsend, so he gave the youngster a chance to be 'cabin girl'. When she showed no sign of giving up despite being given the worst jobs he could find for her, he began to treat her more as one of the crew and taught her the basics of the trade.

Five years and countless ports later, Eliana had learned almost everything she could from Juan, now a good friend and a bit of a surrogate father figure. Everything, except how to control her temper. The crew were mostly friends, people she regarded as almost family, and so had learned how to stay out of her way when she was truly angry, as she could be unbelievably viscious when cornered. That was a lesson the drunken marine in a seedy Miami bar learned the hard way when he refused to take no for an answer to his advances and tried to pin the much smaller woman to the wall, so she kicked him in the groin and put a knife in to the hilt between his ribs.

Luckily for both of them the wound ended up not being fatal, but it still landed her in an exceptionally troublesome spot, since even in the bad parts of Miami stabbing people is heavily frowned upon. To this day she doesn't know exactly what prompted Sally Carter to back up her self-defense story. Maybe female solidarity, maybe she felt sorry for her, maybe the naval ensign just found it funny that a tiny latina woman could lay out a marine more than twice her size. Regardless, it got Eliana off with just a slap on the wrist and an easily erasable record instead of hard time.

For that she offered Carter help any time she needed it, a promise she'd go to great lengths to honor. And now, almost a year later, Eliana finds herself in Cape May, NJ, as part of that promise, with a note from Carter saying that a friend of hers, a Kevin Roberts, could use her knowledge and skills on a project. Only time will tell how it works out, but a promise is a promise, and that's one thing Eliana always tries to keep.

Physical and Personality Description

Fairly short at an even 5' tall, Eliana is well-toned and curvaceous. She's very tanned, even beyond the natural pigment granted from her heritage, due to countless hours in the sun. Her black hair is kept approximately shoulder length, and left loose unless the situation calls for tying it back. Clothing tends towards the practical when aboard ship, and towards looser, colorful outfits when she's out and about.

Her personality is generally warm and outgoing, though she has a definite mean streak when it comes to people that piss her off. She'll chat with almost anyone about pretty much anything given the opportunity and time. In battle though, she's all business and ascribes to 'No quarter asked, and none given'.

Juan Gutierrez 4/3
A friend, mentor, and surrogate father. He's the captain that first gave her a chance to prove herself, and she's been working alongside him for almost 6 years. He's a bit disappointed that she's going to be out on her own now, but also proud of her, and he understands her desire to keep her word. Of all her crewmates on the smuggling ship, he's the closest to being real family. He's careful to not take advantage of that trust, and he tries to make sure Eliana has support, but finds her own path.

Jamaican doctor who helps run a clinic serving the underpriviledged on the island. Eliana met him as a friend of Juan's who could help her get some cyber she had acquired installed. As she was a relatively frequent patron, she's taken to helping out at the clinic when she can, and the man has become a friend in his own right. He's given her a few pointers on medical care, and has found her to be an apt student, though her profession keeps her from taking the time for learning in depth.

A friend of Ensign Carter, a woman that Eliana owes a huge favor to. Eliana knows basically nothing about him, but is willing to trust Carter's judgement on him and assist in the operation he has planned as part of her promise.

Ok folks, I had to do a whole lot of skimming through the OOC, and correct me if I'm wrong on the focus everyone was looking at, but here's how I see things:

And, yes, despite the fact she could kick the living crap out of Salt in a close-combat-fight, he would tag Eliana as the Doc, because she's got the skills. Hell, she's better than the Doc on my ship.

Sharky can do some first aid but not enough to be a medical officer. Combat medic at a pinch 13 dice. Though Roger IIRC has much better medical training. Again he's a we'll trained combatant so he'll be in the thick of any boarding operation but quite a few of us are like that.

Cherry was actually for Comms. She's much, much better at that than Intel. On the other hand, you're the Captain. I strongly suspect that both Comms and Intel will get shared between Cherry and Roger.

Just as an example of Cherry's Comms-ness, she throws over 20 dice for EW, I think.
