How does this work? If a hacker rolls Computer + Program, do they need a certain number of hits to see how well they did? You know, kind of like a Threshold? But then it becomes an Opposed test with Hacking + Program vs System+firewall, right? How does that work? If there's no threshold, doesn't that mean its often easier to do what you want by hacking it? (not that i'm complaining, workarounds are often faster than legit fixes) Our house rule is mostly threshold based. The hacking test isn't an opposed test, however when you use hacking it does trigger an automatic scan of the system (system rolls Analyze + Firewall (or IC rolls Analyze + Rating) as an opposed test against the hacker's roll of his Stealth) Net hits on the opposed test are added to the security tally. I could post our complete house rules if there is enough intrest. -D |

Hyper-specialize, and yes, I was thinking of those awful 'combat hacker' builds. As for the other, knowing you're there is *bad* and there's nothing you can really do, except—yes—waste a precious action in a futile attempt to hide… even though they already know someone's there. As a GM and PC I like it because it allows the defender a chance. If it wasn't for that what could the defender do? |

I mean, we don't need to go on about it here. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) It's just not a fair chance. Being detected isn't based on the instruder doing well (or badly), but solely on the defender succeeding within his own terms. He has the same chance of detecting a noob or a master. That's just weird. Anyway, if I see another 'super combat hacker' cookie-cutter… blah.

Lol well this talk definitely has me thinking about the system more. I'll have to figure out something that addresses that. You have any ideas?

I'm still dealing with the EPr3 dice rules in general, but off the cuff… maybe just make it a normal opposed test. Hmm.

That probably would be the simplest manner.
If you win no problem If you lose then you don't get in and they know someone tried if you both lose then you get in (because they failed) but they know you're there (because you failed)? This is just from personal experience because some of the best hacking missions were when they knew I was in the system so it was a constant race of rerouting traces and loading viruses/worms to distract their resources. You don't like the black jack route they took? Wasn't the old way the lower you roll the better? I only have a 3rd book because I sold my older one to a friend for cheap. Maybe we should move this to either the EP forums or the EP thread here on dumpshock. |
