Dragon Group: Dumpshocked Posts: 4,258 Joined: 9-March 10 From: The Citadel Member No.: 18,267	In line with my (as yet unfinished) Archive of Adepts and Examples of the eVolved I thought I'd start a collection of magic types to add to the many other character types / builds I have floating around my head and to hopefully get some helpful criticism back to sort out some of the more obvious mistakes / omissions / etc... In addition if anyone has some really good builds they'd like to share then that would be great! Check out UmaroIV's thread on archetypes for some great builds that use a mix of magic and cyber... <<here>> Some Notes: They aren't optimised (hence posting them here for comment) and this is a work in progress. I am trying to avoid one trick ponies, aiming for one skill at 14D+ and a couple of others rolling 11-12D. These aren't min/maxed because that's something I'm bad at! Standard 400BP creation, all books and basically RAW I've also used the Chax2 contact BPs houserule for these. Let me tell you, they were not happy that we are together now and it has strained my already precarious relationship with them and the family at large almost to breaking point. Stillwater Circle [L:2 C:2 G:6] They were instrumental in bringing my family and I across to America to help them after they faced a destructive attack from outside forces. I assisted them in laying down protections for the future and now keep an eye out for potential recruits and occasionally step in when my talents are required for some shadow work. They are a multi-disciplinary magical group intent on furthering the transhumanist agenda of the Stillwater Community Background [ Spoiler ] Physical Description Ember is a tall, gaunt individual with light hair and grey, stark eyes. He has the fiery personality associated with his mentor spirit, the Bright One, but also a surprisingly gentle streak that usually manifests itself with his family. Background My name is Daniel and I stand on the brink of many worlds without really being a part of any of them. I was born to the re-emerged Penthièvre family and can trace my lineage back, through the French Revolution, almost eight hundred years. The magic in my veins, however, dates back to an even earlier age. I grew up flitting between our estates near Quimper and Nantes with frequent trips to Paris and my family would like it if I was more grateful for the expense lavished on me. The fact that I was more interested in being with my Breton friends and once it happened, exploring my magic and its connection to the land, didn’t interest them in the slightest, particularly when I made it abundantly clear that I would not be manipulated for their political gains and the Game of Houses. I will freely admit that I was a brat as a child and a prime product of the nobility. My gradual awakening, the voice of the Bright One in my dreams and contact with the more normal people of Brittany thankfully provided me insights that changed my potential path irrevocably. I rejected the lures of noble life for a wilder and ultimately freer existence in the Breton heartland. My family refused to give up their hold on me entirely however; as a magic user I represented a valuable pawn in their games. Partly in rebellion but mainly because of my huge and unlooked for love, I committed the cardinal sin at eighteen of falling for an Irish witch. Despite the fact that she was an elf and also wielded considerable magical talent my family were disgusted by this pollution of their precious bloodline. I have learnt since that this outrage was another pretence designed to throw their rivals off some scent and I know they still have their claws in me but I have done my best to limit their influence on my life and that of my family. I was sent to study in Paris at the new magical programme at the Sorbonne but my heart was already set on Charlotte and our future together. I learnt what I could but always with the knowledge that their teachings were biased towards hermetic studies and could not encompass the magnitude of contact with the Old Ways. I married Charlotte in fifty four at the end of my course and once she had completed her doctorate studies in Dublin. I am continuously amazed that I was lucky enough to snare her attentions and then lure her away from the Tir to a simple life in Brittany. A year later our first son, Gael, was born and he was followed in fifty eight by our daughter Ariana. In sixty one we adopted Gisèle in slightly murky circumstances. Her parents were friends of Charlotte who fell to an altercation with the long arms of the government. We smuggled her away before the authorities could snatch her. Finally in sixty five we were blessed with a second son Kei. To one degree or another, my entire family have connections to the spirit world and the old blood runs strong through us all. My first personal contact with the shadows came in fifty seven through a friend of Charlotte. Although I perhaps hadn’t consciously recognised it, I think I knew that Charlotte was involved in more things than simple magic that my family wouldn’t have approved of. Then again political games and shadowy manoeuvrings are second nature to them but this was the kind of thing that upset the status quo. I ended up helping an eco-cell get through the Mist and assisted them in avoiding corporate forces. Since then I’ve peripherally been involved in several shadow ops where my skills with spirits were required. How my family found out I don’t know, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but I also ended up working occasionally in their interests, sometimes confrontation needs to be avoided for the sake of my family. We live comfortably off their money and there is no real need for me to work the shadows for a living so I am usually able to pick and choose what I get involved with. Eighteen months ago Charlotte was contacted about work in Seattle and we jumped at the chance to be a little bit further out of my family’s reach. The Stillwater community were recovering from a devastating attack and they were gathering various experts from around the world to help them rebuild and protect themselves from future aggression. It was my dealings with the Mist that interested them and so they paid for us all to fly over and arranged a temporary job on the Thaumaturgy course at Seattle U as a cover. That job has since become permanent and I enjoy the new challenge of imparting knowledge to new students, even if I’ve been accused of being unforgiving of mistakes and of imparting knowledge in a haphazard manner. I have also been able to recruit some of the more likely candidates to assist the Stillwater Circle who have aided me so much in my magical studies. Charlotte meanwhile has set herself up as a fixer of repute under the handle Argent and I have taken Ember as my moniker, being a small spark in the face of the Bright One. The children have settled in well to the schools that we found for them and are improving their English at a far faster rate than I. Whilst I wouldn’t call myself a professional shadowrunner I continue to dabble in that world alongside the safer world of academia. Other Key NPCs Gael Penthièvre [Elven Celtic Druidic Apprentice] – My firstborn and the wildest of the family, we are not sure if he has been chosen yet, although he displays all the tendancies of Kournous. His affinity for the spirits is almost as strong as my own and it will not be too much longer before we need to take him home to finish his training among a real circle. Ariana Penthièvre [Human child] – I seem to be blessed or cursed with a wild family and Ariana is no different. She is on the cusp of adulthood and although one should not have favourites I suppose the fact that she was born human has forged a bond between us that is different from the others. Gisèle Penthièvre [Elven child] – My dark one, we suspect she listens to the voice of Morrigan which was no surprise to us given who her birth parents were. Kei Penthièvre [Elven child] – The youngest of my brood we did not expect with Charlotte’s elven heritage that another would be born. He has not yet manifested any talent but I strongly suspect that it is lurking and will probably materialise at the time when it will cause the most difficulties. Arnaud Penthièvre [Human Noble] – My father and scion of the great Penthièvre house. He is a manipulative bastard with all the morels of a devil rat. Of course very few get to see beyond his charming, gracious countenance and those that do often don’t regret it for very long. Desire [Human Quantum Mage] – A fascinating woman who is the nominal head of the Stillwater circle. Despite the fundamental differences in our Traditions there is much I can learn from her. Notes: Ember was one of my first mage characters in SR4 and has many flaws in his build...for example, he should have bought that expensive power focus at character gen, it would have been cheaper! For those of you who haven’t had the wit to see me perform then I will tell you that I am a dancer, an elf, slim and athletic with my races’ natural beauty. My real beauty is in my dance, my magic and my temper. I have been accused of being unpredictable but that is only by those who don’t understand me…I have come to terms with the darker side of myself by embodying it in the faceless mask and allowing myself only to feel when I set it aside. I grew up in a happy environment in a Horizon sponsored enclave in downtown Seattle. My parents were in the middle of the corporate food chain so I ate well, had access to a good education and some of the best recreational facilities available. My parents insisted that I dance, I think it was more about the discipline than the artistry of it, but I had an aptitude for it that they couldn’t ignore. They were disappointed that I didn’t seem destined for the media executive but I convinced them that my chosen path lead elsewhere. Things became a little more turbulent in my teens…more so than your average moody pubescent girl I had flashes of wild temper bordering on rage. I began to hear voices in the night and was ready to convince myself that I was loosing it. Thankfully the powers that be were quick to spot my nascent Talent and work with me to understand the additional confusing changes that were being heaped upon me. Now I know that it is Moon that I hear when my mind is still. Once my struggles with my magic were more or less resolved things might have returned to normality, indeed they did for a while…I got on with my life, mixing school with an increasing amount of dance and was pipped for a professional company. I wouldn’t be here now though if it had all gone as smoothly as that… I was eighteen and working towards my final graduation performance. As usual, emotions were running high and it was into this heightened atmosphere that a group of what I can only assume were shadowrunners decided to crash the party. Its not exactly clear even now what their intentions were, it seems unlikely to me that I was the one being targeted for extraction but anyhow, I was caught up in it all, bundled into the back of a van and whisked off into the night with three of the other dancers. I don’t really remember much of what happened in the following week, my psychs called it a break but it seems to me it was more of an unleashing. I know that my magic spoke to me more strongly than it had ever done, before or since and awakened a darkness in me that had been dormant, probably due to the safe corp environment that I’d grown up in… I lost my way for a while and was found wandering the streets of Redmond by a group of mages called the Stillwater Circle. I don’t want to think about why the other urban predators had avoided me before that… Although they returned me to my parents the quiet corporate haven had gone and I was no longer able to fit in. I spent the next six months flitting from one thing to the next and eventually stormed out entirely. I sought out the mages that helped me before and they welcomed me back to them, I think they had known all along that I would return to them. They helped me to find the measure of myself by enabling to see that the darkness was as part of the Moon as the light and that I should embrace both. To help me with this they showed me how to contain the darker parts of my personality behind a crafted mask. By putting it on I have learnt to subsume my normal life and temporarily disassociate any feelings of guilt or doubt and allow me to act. Then, when I take it off, I can accept any pain that I have caused but it is tempered by the insulation of the Mask. Of course I need to be careful that I don’t get lost in the Mask and the allure of being absolved of any consequences. This nearly happened to me shortly after I first donned it and the Stillwater community were viciously attacked by outsiders in the summer of 2070. I used my magic to punish the invaders, revelling in their pain and inevitable defeat…at least until the bombs dropped and the world turned to fire. WIP… Community dissolves for a while and Masque is bereft Fate seems to intervene once more and she is discovered by Oblique and the Cirque de la Lune where her theatrical skills are much in demand The Circus is a cover for a smuggling operation – although they tend to smuggle people rather than goods, crossing the fractured North Americas and sometimes into Aztlan Works intermittently in the shadows to further the Circus’ goals This post has been edited by Aria: Oct 20 2011, 12:49 PM
