I am Beth Finael and I am Masque, an expression of the duality of the performer and the watcher in the dark, the
normal citizen and the shadowrunner. For those of you who haven’t had the wit to see me perform then I will tell you that I am a dancer, an elf, slim and athletic with my races’ natural beauty. My real beauty is in my dance, my magic and my temper. I have been accused of being unpredictable but that is only by those who don’t understand me…I have come to terms with the darker side of myself by embodying it in the faceless mask and allowing myself only to feel when I set it aside.
I grew up in a happy environment in a Horizon sponsored enclave in downtown Seattle. My parents were in the middle of the corporate food chain so I ate well, had access to a good education and some of the best recreational facilities available. My parents insisted that I dance, I think it was more about the discipline than the artistry of it, but I had an aptitude for it that they couldn’t ignore. They were disappointed that I didn’t seem destined for the media executive but I convinced them that my chosen path lead elsewhere.
Things became a little more turbulent in my teens…more so than your average moody pubescent girl I had flashes of wild temper bordering on rage. I began to hear voices in the night and was ready to convince myself that I was loosing it. Thankfully the
powers that be were quick to spot my nascent
Talent and work with me to understand the additional confusing changes that were being heaped upon me. Now I know that it is
Moon that I hear when my mind is still.
Once my struggles with my magic were more or less resolved things might have returned to normality, indeed they did for a while…I got on with my life, mixing school with an increasing amount of dance and was pipped for a professional company. I wouldn’t be here now though if it had all gone as smoothly as that…
I was eighteen and working towards my final graduation performance. As usual, emotions were running high and it was into this heightened atmosphere that a group of what I can only assume were shadowrunners decided to crash the party. Its not exactly clear even now what their intentions were, it seems unlikely to me that I was the one being targeted for extraction but anyhow, I was caught up in it all, bundled into the back of a van and whisked off into the night with three of the other dancers. I don’t really remember much of what happened in the following week, my psychs called it a
break but it seems to me it was more of an unleashing. I know that my magic spoke to me more strongly than it had ever done, before or since and awakened a darkness in me that had been dormant, probably due to the safe corp environment that I’d grown up in…
I lost my way for a while and was found wandering the streets of Redmond by a group of mages called the Stillwater Circle. I don’t want to think about why the other urban predators had avoided me before that… Although they returned me to my parents the quiet corporate haven had gone and I was no longer able to fit in. I spent the next six months flitting from one thing to the next and eventually stormed out entirely. I sought out the mages that helped me before and they welcomed me back to them, I think they had known all along that I would return to them.
They helped me to find the measure of myself by enabling to see that the darkness was as part of the
Moon as the light and that I should embrace both. To help me with this they showed me how to contain the darker parts of my personality behind a crafted mask. By putting it on I have learnt to subsume my normal life and temporarily disassociate any feelings of guilt or doubt and allow me to
act. Then, when I take it off, I can accept any pain that I have caused but it is tempered by the insulation of the Mask.
Of course I need to be careful that I don’t get lost in the Mask and the allure of being absolved of any consequences. This nearly happened to me shortly after I first donned it and the Stillwater community were viciously attacked by outsiders in the summer of 2070. I used my magic to punish the invaders, revelling in their pain and inevitable defeat…at least until the bombs dropped and the world turned to fire.

- Community dissolves for a while and Masque is bereft
- Fate seems to intervene once more and she is discovered by Oblique and the Cirque de la Lune where her theatrical skills are much in demand
- The Circus is a cover for a smuggling operation – although they tend to smuggle people rather than goods, crossing the fractured North Americas and sometimes into Aztlan
- Works intermittently in the shadows to further the Circus’ goals
