Well, there's always a significant advantage in translating an existing product. You can include errata and apparently even the 5$ pdf only books. This being said: Pegasus is known for quality work and I'm glad to see that they continue with it in Shadowrun.
Personally, I don't like the Urban Brawl book, but it is still an excellent standalone german product.
I also really like the differences in the cover artwork.
Downside is the higher prize and having to wait for the books. I've bought all my english pdfs relatively early after releasse, because I don't like having to wait, and of course that means, with a limited budget and a tablet, that I won't buy any of the beautiful hardcovers anymore.

We had the Discussion about PDF versus Dead Tree on another german board for some days this week . .
The only really good thing about Books is that you can have them in a shelf to show off and you can use them as a shield/bashing implement for/against certain players . .

No. I also really like the feel of a book and pages between my fingers. Also, the smell.
But for a convention, it's really really impractical, and full text search in a pdf on an iPad = awesome.

Edit: @Name: Common misconception (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) I used this for my first SR character, a scottish patriot. About a year later, I first read the BT books and discovered that the mech was named for the same reason ^^

Yah, the tactile/sensory impact of ink and paper is a really nice thing . .
But if you go into the 20 HARDCOVER at least, you will need to reconsider bringing them with you . .

As for me, i usually use a Laptop, since i don't like tablets <.<

Because.... no, I won't go there. I like the Germans. In fact, I was born in Bad Cannstatt, as was my father (although both he and I are full-blooded Natural-Born Americans), and I took a year of German in highschool (so many years ago...).

Why do Germans get the best stuff?

Because they take the stuff other people write, and get the chance to refine it prior to publication (especially when said refinement includes the unique opportunity to specifically include material tailored to your geographical target audience), mostly.

I really dig the German crew that I've met and hung out with (I got some Urban Brawl trading cards from 'em, in fact!), but to completely describe one set of core products as bad, and the translations of them (with additional edits and errata worked in) as good is...well...just the sort of hyperbolic oversimplification that I've come to expect from the internet, I suppose, but Stahl's a bright guy and I'm sure he knows that. I'm glad that German Shadowrun fans have books they like, at any rate.

Quality German Engineering?
Oh yes, since a German (Holy Roman German, whatever) has invented the movable type (yes, I know China and Korea) and the printing press, half a millennium later we really got this book printing stuff nailed down here in Germany. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

In more seriousness, I have to agree with Critias the German translation is not a rewrite. The added stuff is a small portion of the whole book and even with some mistakes corrected the quality of the German translation still hinges on the quality of the original work. I guess I will just keep beating this, but I had high hopes for the German Almanach and there certainly was a _lot_ of correction work done on this one, but some of the major stuff like fixing the geography of Asia or at least making more plausible alterations evidently was not green-lighted in the end.

@Stahlseele: The German version of War! is Fronteinsatz not Frontabschnitt.

I see a lot about the German books here on the boards, but does anyone know anything about the French language books? My German is decent , but I'm WAY better at reading in French and it would be nice to have access to some of this stuff for my games.

I don't follow it closely, but as far as I know Black Book Éditions only does translations. Some of the translated titles include French exclusive additions. For example Enclaves corporatistes has Lille or Jungles urbaines (Feral Cities) describes Clermont-Ferrand. But I don't think you can get this separately.

I really like the German "Schattenkatalog", which is a print version of all the PDF content from MilspecTech to Gun Heaven bound in black leather. AFAIK, it's limited to a print of 750. I've got #34.

I own all my SR books in PDF format now - and keep copies on my NookColor, for travel. Grab my eReader and a cubeof SR-modified* dice, and I'm good to go. No more hundred-pound weightlifting competitions to lug around 1 or 2 milk-crates full of books; I'm 41 now, not 14.

I don't know if they're only sold in Germany, but we have official Shadowrun dice here with the Shadowrun logo on the 5 and 6. They're packed in neat metal boxes, each containing a set of 9. Was kinda funny when our residential gunbunny showed up with four boxes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif)

They must be full-sized dice, if they come only nine to a box.

The dice I modified are actually meant for Games Workshop's minis games. 27 dice in a cube, 2 of which were specialised (so couldn't be used for SR). That left 25 dice to modify ... more than enough for most circumstances (and I can pack a standard Chessex 36-die cube or two, both to share and to supplement).

They're smaller than standard d6, though. So the 3x3x3 GW cube ends up being, oh, maybe 5cm or 6cm on a side.
