It's not as bad as he makes it sound. The "paying for games" at our conventions normally consists of a couple $2 tickets (normally it's $2 an hour, give or take). Honestly, of all the things I pay for my trips to GenCon, game tickets (and even my four-day badge) are at the bottom of my expense list -- it's the hotel and travel (in that order) that add up the most. |

And, yes, $300 was the Kickstarter amount I paid for to get into that game, along with many shiny other things. |

Well, on most conventions (where I do my GMing) here in Germany, I pay the entry fee and get it back later for being kind enough to GM (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
If I'm just going as a player, I pay my 10€ (on one of the biggest conventions here) for a weekend and play as much as I like. When SR was still FanPro, I was usually invited to the 'house convention' in Dortmund, where two other GMs and I offered a special event, a Shadowrun adventure in 24h, mostly Real Time. I didn't pay any entry fee (being invited) but we raffled away the 5 or 6 spots to the players. For free, of course. In other news: this is big fun for the GMs. We did 3 8h shifts, while the players got more and more tired and sloppy towards the end. Lot of psychological pressure on the characters as well. Personally, I wouldn't do it, but the players loved it, back then (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) So yeah, travel cost (and for some, hotel), but not much more for just playing. Sorry for being off-topic, but CanRay! Can you give us a few details? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |

Shiny things catch the cat's eye. |

Oh, I can see why conventions might want to have you pay for games, especially if there's some prep work on part of the GMs involved (or the money just ends up with them, and they have to pay entry fee too), but 300 seemed a bit ... staggering.
