Alex's former partner and an extremely competent detective in her own right. What should have been the worst partnership ever somehow worked, as Selene is almost the exact opposite of Alex. Where he is a fairly straight-laced human, Italian Catholic guy and 4th generation cop, she is a lesbian technopagan ork living in a polygynous marriage with a dwarf and another ork and climbed from the Barrens to join Lone Star. She's still a little annoyed with him for getting caught banging the captain's (married) daughter, but they have lunch once a week together and talk shop and the past.

Steven is a journalist for one of the local independent holosheets. He won a Pulitzer for a story he wrote that Alex was the "anonymous source" on, and he's been a good source for data now that Alex isn't behind the blue line anymore.

Ricky is Alex's cousin by marriage, and a made man in the Seattle Mob. They don't have anything in common other than that, but seeing someone at family events three or four times a year means you get to know someone.

Vinaeteri is one of the mechanics in the KE motor pool that came over with most of the other cops in the contract switch. He liked Alex well enough, and with a little palm greasing will work on his vehicles on the side.

Vic Con 2 Loy 1
Vic is a former ER doctor who was busted for selling pain meds out of the facility he worked at. He lost his license, but decided to keep working in the field. Rumors swirl that he has an arrangement with Tanamous to take the corpses of the patients who don't make it, which he vigorously denies. Since he doesn't have medical insurance anymore, Alex judiciously hasn't asked many questions.

"Sapphire" Con 1 Loy 3
Sapphire is a stripper at the local "gentleman's club" that Alex frequents. She's taken a shine to him (and his money), and has been the "stress relief" he needs every now and again. The club owner turns a blind eye to it, as he knows Alex used to be a cop and still has friends.

@phlapjack: On a quick scan through, I had a couple of issues with the arms. First was how do you conceal a MP with a 30 rd clip in a cyber forearm. It seems just a little bit of a stretch for an average strength human/orc. I'd accept either a shortened 20 rd mag, or a normal pistol. Second was the internal air tank - just how does that work?

I am also definitely keen to know how he lost his forearms!

The only other thing that stood out was the contacts and background being set in Asia.

Yeah sorry - I forgot that the link I gave was to a very rough concept. I agree with what you said, things are getting re-jiggered. Think of it more in terms of ideas and character concept, rather than hard numbers. I'm trying to fix him up, I'll post him when I've got him ready.

Background

Born in 2050, Henry Rejaenpe was a typical child of the Sixth world. He was fascinated by technology and thought his parents were just too old to get it when they tried to tell him that technology is not all there is. Still, they indulged him when he was young. Even going so far as buying him his own cyberdeck at the age of 10.

But then came the disaster of the Renraku Arcology. The same day of his birthday, the Arcologoy was put into lock down. It was a long time before news of the true horrors inside the Arcology came out, but when they did Henry's parents freaked out about their son's obsession with tech. They took away his shiny new cyberdeck and began to severely limit his access to the Matrix and other "dangerous" tech.

The Year of the comet was a tumultuous one. It finally convinced his parents to move back to their homeland, Salish-Shidhe, the following year. Henry hated this change as it took him away from everything he knew and loved. Sure the Salish aren't a backward people, they have tech, but in his mind all their green-tech was just fighting against the beautiful of unadulterate technology.

When the Crash 2.0 of '64 happened, his parents knew they had to take extreme measures with their son. They legally changed his name to Tlalin and began taking him to Council Island more often to visit with his very traditional father, a shaman and member of the Council itself.

This just served to push Henry (he refused to acknowledge the name Tlalin) further away. It also made him more secretive about how he began to learn the inner workings of the new Matrix. He began to constantly wear a pair of oversized headphones, loving the music that had always been part of his life, but more importantly it allowed him to keep the world at large at bay while he quitely sat around coding and surfing the 'trix.

During his visit to Council Island there was one bright spot though. The island had relatively frequent traffic from the "real" city, Seattle. In particular, Henry befriended a young corporate exec who often came to meet with the Council regarding Tsimshian(which Mitsuhama had ostensibly pulled out of in '65) and other matters. Eventually the exec recruited Henry and brought him to Seattle after seeing some of Henry's programming skills. It was against his parents' wishes, but at this point Henry was 18 and they couldn't stop him.

Three years working for Mitsuhama gave Henry a strong desire for the luxuries of the modern world. The clothes, the lifestyle, the clubs, he loved it all. But he hated the restrictions of working in the corporate environment, they kept trying to take away his headphones and make him actually listen to the boring ass meetings that are a constant of the corporate wolrd. When they then took his coolest idea ever, an agent that ran on your commlink and analyzed your mood/behavior/environment to give a literal soundtrack to your life in real-time, with hardly a thank you; he had enough. He used his hacking skills to edit his way into some corporate money and to erase any data the company had on him as he made his way into the shadows.

The man who recruited him, knew what was happening but was grateful enough for the big promotion he got from "his" life's soundtrack program that he let it pass and even gives Henry jobs from time to time.

Henry hasn't been that successful in the shadows thus far. Still he's managed to setup a nice life for himself filled with clubbing, coding, and the occasional excitement of the shadow world that pays the bills and gets the thrills.

1) What's your heritage? Amerind; both parents are natives of the Salish-Shidhe
2) What would your parents say about you? His parents are traditionalists who shun technology and are disappointed with their son's obsession; they feel it is a weakness in him and a failing for themselves as parents that they could not show him the true path
3) What historical events does your character remember? The Crash of '64 and subsequent emergence of the Matrix 2.0 has been a major influence in his life obviously. He's been around for various other historical events but he was so often lost in his little digital world that it didn't touch him that much, with the exception of the events at Renraku Arcology for which he was more just fascinated by the existence of a true AI.
4) How did you get into shadowrunning, and why? At an early age he was attracted to all things tech, AR in particular sucked him down the rabbit hole; often he would travel to Council Island with his parents (his Grandfather is a member of the council) and there he caught glimpses of the wider world of tech; in his later teens he befriend a corporate envoy you routinely traveled to Council Island and when he finally left home to escape his parents' techno-phobia he ended up working for that same corporation. Their rules were too rigid for him now that he was finally rebelling against his upbringing. And so he turned to the shadows
5) What is your living space like? While working for the corporation, he adopted all things city; his clothes are all corporate oriented leaning towards suits rather than business casual. He hasn't been that successful as a runner, so his apartment isn't in the best of areas, but he always keeps it trendy and impecably clean and minimalist in decorations
6) What are your beliefs / convictions (if any) and why do you hold them? He's young at 22 and still learning who he is; considering his history; his convictions that technology is everything and the traditions of the past are worthless overrules most everything else in his life
7) what do you think is your most annoying / worst trait? the oversized headphones that he constantly wears even when at business meetings is probably what most annoys people about him. listening to music on these headphones was his first introduction to music and it still holds his attention; in fact, it's where he gets his streetname from; he's constantly listening to music, bobbing his head to the beat, tapping his foot when he sits, putting a bit more motion in his steps as he walks

On the one hand he is grateful for getting his start with them; on the other hand he hates them for stealing his idea and making such a huge profit off of it while giving him squat. On the third virtual hand, they are also where most of his runs thus far have come from via his exec friend. He mistrusts any corp that is heavily involved in the business of magic, particularly Aztlan.
9) How did you come to know your contacts?Henry has 3 contacts, Masuko is the Mitsuhama exec that initially recruitted him and got him out of his parents house, for which he is eternally grateful. So much so that they are still in regular contact despite Henry's ill-will towards Mitsuhama at large.
Reed Caspa, is the DJ of one of the best clubs in town and he also does some work as a fixer on the side. Henry became friends with him because of how often he frequents that particular club. They would often discuss music together and eventually Reed starting sending the occasional shadowrun Henry's way.
Henry has also gained the frequent services of a backstreet cyberdoc where he has been getting some second-hand 'ware to boost his hacking skills. They generally have a strictly business relationship, but with how often Henry's come looking for new gear he is willing to share a few tidbits of info when he can.
10) What do you do on a day off? he mostly hangs out at underground clubs at night, listening to the music while he surfs the 'trix
11) How did you come to learn your skills at your present proficiency? all his spare time/energy while living with his parents was dedicated to learning about tech, learning the ins and outs of the Matrix once he was able to get his hands on a commlnk, he was further taught by the corp he worked for once he left them
12) Are there any moral limits on what jobs you take or things you'll do? mostly he will be a pacifist, chosing to only ever fight if he has to and even then he will only use non-lethal weapons; he wants everybody to be allowed to be what they want to be; ending life would put a stop to that; so he would refuse any sort of wetwork
13) How do you view magic / technomantic abilities? he has great disdain for magic, sees it as an extension of the traditions his parents tried to push on him. technomancy is another thing though. He wishes he could become part of the technology the way technomancers can
14) How do you view augmentation / implantation? augmentation is a wonderful thing; it's a "seamless" integration between flesh and tech
15) What do you think of ordinary life and those who live it? ordinary people are cool with him, he just knows that kind of life isn't for him. but if that what floats your boat, go for it
16) What would be a bad nightmare for you? Any deep-rooted fears? Why is it so frightening to you? his deepest fears would be to be denied access to tech; to be banned from the Matrix; to be forced to live the traditional life of his parents
17) What is your 'sacred object' or 'close one', and how did they become so important to you? his headphones even more than his commlink are sacred to him. As I mentioned it was his first introduction to tech and he's kept them in perfect working ordering over the years, whereas he's constantly tinkering with his commlink, upgrading it, formatting it to put in new OS/software
18) What did you want to become as a child, and what are your goals now? he wanted to become a techno god! yeah he knows that childish, but he still wishes it could be so. he doesn't have much of a long term plan/goal he's just working to keep food on the table and concert tickets in his pocket
19) What does your character look like, and what inspired her choices? think i already went over this with his living arrangements, he tends to dress rather well, especially considering his circumstances; though he is never without his bulky headphones that are somewhat worn with age

I do like the concept, so looking forward to reworked version. I was also thinking about the air tank and as they are obvious arms, there could be a rebreather in the palm of the left hand requiring you to cover mouth and nose with to use tank. It's more color than anything else, but it's the sort of little drawback I like in a character.

A somewhat disheveled, pale ork male. Stands 1.9m tall, but slouches a little so it's hard to judge his real height. His large frame is wiry, with a slight paunch of middle-age beginning to show. Short, buzz-cut hair is black with grey on the sides and temples. Dante isn't one for shaving, so he has small sprouts of hair on his face, but nothing approaching a beard. His pale skin has several blotches and is a little grimey - showering too much is bad for a person's health. He has an air of confidence about him, but there's also something lurking in the back of his eyes that says he's seen something horrible. His two obvious cyberarms are usually covered, although he's not trying to hide them.

Lifestyle
Dante was lucky and was able to rent a tong lou, getting a 3-story townhouse-like building in a neighborhood with many vacant buildings. The ground floor had been an old abandoned restaurant, which Dante has turned into his garage and work area. The mid-level floor is the living area, usually filled with VR game action. The top floor is for sleeping and whatnot. There is also a ladder to the roof here - on the roof is a door to the adjoining building. On any given evening, Dante can be found playing his VR games against his friend Tu Dai Fu, or against the AI that lives in his home node. In return for soundly beating Dante at every game they play, the AI will periodically erase the scores to make it not so obvious what's happening. The AI goes further than is necessary though, and ends up erasing all of Dante's online datatrail whenever this happens.

Background
He had begun to make a name for himself, running the Beijing shadows. But as often happens, he got deceived into taking a job that wasn't what it appeared to be. Making too many enemies too quickly, he left the heat behind and moved to Seattle on advice from his fixer, who knew a few people and helped make some introductions. Once in Seattle, Dante began a day job selling street food from the back of his vehicle. But the day job is also an effective cover for the times when he is on a run...

Jiu Jiu - fixer C4/L5
After having left Beijing because of difficulties with the local government / triad groups, Dante's fixer in Beijing hooked him up with Jiu Jiu in Seattle. Jiu Jiu has a very friendly demeanor - he tends to remind people of their favorite uncle. Jiu Jiu is a Seattle native of asian descent, speaks several languages fluently, and seems to know everyone. He has gotten Dante good work in Seattle, including body guard and security gigs.

Yamada Taro - Mechanic C2/L5
Taro was introduced to Dante by Jiu Jiu. Dante was initially skeptical about using Taro to repair his vehicles, his deep-seated dislike of the Japanese warring with the fact that Taro came highly recommended. Finally trusting in his fixer, Dante came to find that Taro is a top-notch mechanic, and a good guy to hang out with. When he can, Dante spends time helping Taro out at his shop, fixing anything he can. He has even started picking up some Japanese to be able to "talk shop" with Taro. Dante's positive interactions with Taro has caused his dislike of the Japanese people to fade. While still not sure he likes them as a whole, he is now not as vocal about it and is willing to give individual Japanese a chance to prove themselves.

Jing Cha - Police detective C4/L2
Police in Beijing are notoriously corrupt, and Seattle is proving to be no different. His path crossed with Dante's while investigating an unrelated case. Even though Dante didn't have anything to do with his case, Jing Cha was able to extract a bribe from him. The little bit of intel he let slip mostly made up for the cost to Dante. Ever since then, the two have a good business relationship.

Ayi - Squatter C2/L4 (free from Chax2)
In making his rounds selling street food, Dante ends the day near where Ayi lives. He gives her the remaining food that he hasn't sold, and she gives him any information and gossip on the street. More than once he's gotten a decent bit of intel from this.

Tu Dai Fu - street doc C3/L4
Tu Dai Fu has become good friends with Dante after eating from his food stall every other day. The fact that Dante speaks some English helps too, as Tu Dai Fu is from CAS and speaks no Chinese. Tu Dai Fu is not his real name, but that's what Dante calls him anyway. The two now meet at Dante's place, drink beer or liquor, and play VR games. Tu Dai Fu has been useful to Dante, fixing him up after runs and helping him take care of his cyberware.

Xiao Hong - gang leader C4/L3
The leader of a small Triad lodge called the Red Lotus, owing allegiance to the 88s. Xiao Hong had Dante start paying him protection money for his apartment. Dante's ability to hold his own in a scrape, and his respect for the Triads has earned the grudging respect of this gang leader.

Do you have space for Cat, an elven (possibly dryad) face?

The concept goes something like this:
Entered into a corporate 'partners' programme by parents when she was 12, who thought it was 'for the best', she received an excellent education courtesy of the corporation and a practical guarantee that on graduation she would be matched up with a suitable corporate executive or up-and-comer. Gifted in arts and languages, she is capable of holding a conversation on practically anything in practically any language, given enough time to study or the right software package, that is. The partners programme is question is set up so that (typically younger) wives and husbands of (typically older) executives get a generous pension on the death of their spouse based on years of service, children and grand children inside the corporation and the spouses pay grade. After 5, 10, 15, 25 and 35 years of marriage they also unlock percentages of inheritance from their spouse. Unfortunately, Cat's husband died of a heart attack six months after their marriage, at the age of 35. The coroner said it was a natural death, but rumours started that Cat might have had something to do with it and the corporation used this as an excuse to void her (already small) pay off. They gave her the option to re-enter the programme and look for a second husband, but, given her now tainted reputation, the way the corporation treated her, and a lingering feeling that she was not a lot better than a high class hooker, she left and returned to her roots in Auburn. Unfortunately, a Master's degree in Arts doesn't get you the kind of life style she's now use to and she's turned to less than legal means of supporting herself, with the help of some of the locals who know her parents.

1) What's your heritage?
The other kind of white Anglo-Saxon protestant. The poor kind.

2) What would your parents say about you?
Charming, intelligent, beautiful. Wilful, childish, innocent.

3) What historical events does your character remember?
Cat was a bit 'dreamy' when she was young, so a lot of major events pretty much passed her by. She was more interested in what was happening in the art world than the real world. For the last 10 years, following the news has been a mandatory part of her education, with essays having to be written on major pieces of news and classes sometimes being diverted to discuss some obscure news article which her teachers decided was interesting. Now it's just a habit, she tries to stay informed.

4) How did you get into shadowrunning, and why?
I was a corporate wife, but my husband died suddenly and the corporation he worked for denied me my pension. They politely offered to find me a new husband. I demurred.

5) What is your living space like?
Simply decorated in subtle colours with as much light and life as I can afford. Ideally I'd like it to be an island of tranquility, but in my parents house in Auburn this is pretty difficult! I'm going to move out to somewhere nicer as soon as I have enough money.

6) What are your beliefs / convictions (if any) and why do you hold them?
Life is an experience to be enjoyed in as many aspects as it can be without surrendering to hedonism and moral decline. I was born to a lower class family with a socialist bent. I guess I've been given a taste of the freedom money can buy you, and now I have a taste of the freedom being outside of mainstream corporate society can buy you. 7) what do you think is your most annoying / worst trait?
I prefer Art over utility. Sometimes this has a cost in the real world. I also have a habit of getting my own way which can lead to an expectation, if I'm not careful about myself.

Corporations are corporations. I don't 'like' or 'dislike' them. Some tread the moral line more than others, so I approve of their actions more. Some disregard the line, which I disapprove of, but I at least admire their honesty! Is that too philosophical?

9) How did you come to know your contacts?
Some are childhood friends, most are people I've met through the opportunities my education provided. A few are from my husbands corporation. Fewer still are new friends I've made since my husband died. I make friends easily, I guess!

10) What do you do on a day off?
I paint, I draw, I listen to music, I read books, I visit people, I socialise, I flirt, I have sex. I enjoy board games, matrix games, street races, sports, fighting. I wasn't taught to find anything boring or to spend my time idly.

11) How did you come to learn your skills at your present proficiency?
Nature and Nurture. Corporations are good at making perfect high society wife material. Couple that with my childhood upbringing in Auburn and I'm set in most situations!

12) Are there any moral limits on what jobs you take or things you'll do?
I don't want to kill people. I'll happily separate rich people or stupid people from their money, but I draw the line at doing the same with their lives.

13) How do you view magic / technomantic abilities?
People have talents, which they use as best they can. The trick is to be the one channeling those abilities to do what you want.

14) How do you view augmentation / implantation?
One talent is knowing how to maximise your strengths and minimise your weaknesses. The tools you use are entirely your own choice. Some people find them crude and ugly, but there is beauty to be found in everything, it's just a matter of perspective.

15) What do you think of ordinary life and those who live it?
Ordinary doesn't exist. Everyones life is unique. We shouldn't assume because someone works a 40 hour week for 'the man' that they are somehow dull and uninteresting!

16) What would be a bad nightmare for you? Any deep-rooted fears? Why is it so frightening to you?
I fear losing myself. I fear insanity and a loss of mind. I don't fear age for the superficial reasons, but I'm definitely terrified of dementia. We couldn't afford the anti dementia drugs for Grandma and it wasn't a good time watching her decline. Most days she couldn't remember her name, but some days she seemed to forget who she was, become violent or confused, lash out at those she loved and who loved her. It wasn't pleasant.

17) What is your 'sacred object' or 'close one', and how did they become so important to you?
My art materials and sketch books. Some I've had since I was 10, some are real, some are synthetic, but they document so much of my life, my ideas, my memories. I draw and paint A LOT, so most things end up in there. I'd be devastated if I lost them all!

18) What did you want to become as a child, and what are your goals now?
I wanted to be a great Artist, to paint beautiful pictures and inspire others to produce beautiful things. I still enjoy painting, but I'm not Artist. Now I want to get enough money together to live my own life. want to be truly independent.

19) What does your character look like, and what inspired her choices?
I like to change my look often. I try and combine my clothes into as many different styles and fashions as I can, so there's not one look. I dye my hair frequently, sometimes several times a week, and I have several sets of coloured contacts and I've even used some short term feature changing treatments to try out different looks. I love to surprise people and myself with changes to myself. That said, God gave me good bone structure, I work out to keep trim and the corporation gave me that perfect American smile and some other minor 'upgrades'. These I don't plan on changing!

20) How did you get your street name?
It's a contraction of Catherine, but I like the connotations of grace and beauty. Call me vain!

Joined a gang when he was young to earn extra money, then moved into shadowrunning from there.

5) What is your living space like?
A really run down 3-story apartment, sort of like a firehouse layout. Dirty, grimy, dark.

6) What are your beliefs / convictions (if any) and why do you hold them?
As a result of his family upbringing, a mixture of Buddhist and Confucianism. He will honor his ancestors and visit temples to make offerings on holy days. He also feels that those who want things in life should take them, and anyone who isn't part of his group is not important.

7) what do you think is your most annoying / worst trait?
Fairly rude and inconsiderate of anyone who he doesn't consider part of his "group".

8) What megacorp do you like the most? the Least? Why?
Likes the most, they're all the same to him. Likes the least, a corporation called ShunLian, a Chinese partner / subsidiary of Renraku. This corporation, and the run where Dante was the only survivor, are the reason he is in Seattle now.

9) How did you come to know your contacts?

10) What do you do on a day off?
Either hang out at home playing VR games, or hanging out with Yamado Toro talking shop and helping fix vehicles, or making sure connections with contacts stay current. And drinking.

11) How did you come to learn your skills at your present proficiency?
Running with a gang from an early age helped with the sneaking and survival skills. He spent some small time at a university studying engineering. Moving into shadowrunning honed his combat skills, and recently the move to Seattle has seen him renew his interest in the mechanical side of life.

12) Are there any moral limits on what jobs you take or things you'll do?
Killing people isn't a problem. Killing children might give him pause. He won't harm friends. Otherwise, it's game on.

13) How do you view magic / technomantic abilities?
Having an innate resistance to magic has given him something of a condescending, "no match for a good blaster at your side" kind of attitude. He doesn't know much about technomancers, but is a little in awe of the idea.

14) How do you view augmentation / implantation?
The more the better. Anything to give him an edge.

15) What do you think of ordinary life and those who live it?
Ordinary life is for the people who can't do any better, who are either too weak or too powerless to give themselves a "better" life. That said, these people are not viewed as bad people, more that Dante wants to be above living this kind of life.

16) What would be a bad nightmare for you? Any deep-rooted fears? Why is it so frightening to you?
Fire played a big role in the loss of his forearms. So any situation with lots of fire would be bad.

17) What is your 'sacred object' or 'close one', and how did they become so important to you?
His Ruger Thunderbolt served him well while in Beijing, and it's pretty much all he has left from that time in his life, possessions-wise.

18) What did you want to become as a child, and what are your goals now?
As a child Dante just wanted to run and gun with the other children. His parents forced him to enroll in an engineering college, but he quickly dropped out as his school time interfered with his gang activities. Now his goals are to make a name for himself in the shadows of Seattle, but leave enough time to play his VR games. Plus his renewed interest in mechanical things means he spends more time with the cerebral side of life.

19) What does your character look like, and what inspired his choices?

20) How did you get your street name?
He took it for himself since he loves playing the video game Devil May Cry, and feels like the main character is a kindred spirit, so powerful and able to defeat all of his enemies.

The Crash of 2064 affected a lot of people in a big way. None moreso than Cipher. For him, it was more than a catastrophe that brought institutions to their knees, it was as awakening. He could finally see.

Cipher is a Technomancer born of the crash. Only Cipher is different. For him their is only one reality and he isn't in it. He's trapped in this Matrix along with everyone else, though no-one else seems to know. For Cipher the world is an unusual place. It's all a game. If only he could learn to master his control of it.

An outsider would say that Cipher is crazy, dangerous, and should be locked away. Perceiving the world as a program can lead you to do some dark things, for what use are morals when the whole world is a game?


20 Questions for

1) What's your heritage?
The usual UCAS blend of a dozen other nationalities. Irish. Italian. A true child of the free world.

2) What would your parents say about you?
Nothing. Cipher stabbed his father while he was still a child trying to adjust to his new perception of reality. He was told he couldn't have a cyberpet, so he stabbed him in the face. His mother, husband dead and child locked away, ended her own life after a struggle with drink. When he was released a few years later, he made a very thorough attempt to erase this record of his past, and has actively stayed off-the-grid and ran SINless ever since.

3) What historical events does your character remember?
The Crash 2.0. Nothing else is real. This one, singular glitch in the Matrix allowed him to see.

4) How did you get into shadowrunning, and why?
There's nowhere else to live. The Shadows are the only place to find any truth in the world. It's denizens, the only ones not part of the corporate machine.

5) What is your living space like?
Different every few weeks. His lifestyle is always spoofed, and usually High. He has to use the mechanics of the world to unlock the mental comfort he desires.

6) What are your beliefs / convictions (if any) and why do you hold them?
All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players. Reality isn't real. He holds this conviction because he can see it. He lives it every day as the singular truth.

7) What do you think is your most annoying / worst trait?
While normal looking on the face of it, beneath the surface Cipher is a sociopath. Anyone that's run with him will have seen him do something questionable or downright amoral without the least bit of remorse or sympathy.

While he hates all of the corporations and their control over reality, NeoNET has a special loathing reserved in his heart. As creators of the Matrix it is them that have concocted this virtual cocoon we all live in. He will take any opportunity to run against them, and will act against them indiscriminately

9) How did you come to know your contacts?
Work, casual meetings, it doesn't matter. None of them understand anyway.

10) What do you do on a day off?
There aren't days off, though his attitide to life fluctuates wildly from day to day. He isn't even sure of his own motivations. If he does manage to uncover the truth does he even want to reveal it or rule over it as a virtual paradise? He'll flip-flop from aggressive action and digging to savouring the world and enjoying its spoils.

11) How did you come to learn your skills at your present proficiency?
He didn't learn how to do anything, merely discovered that he could do it. In this world you can do anything if you can unlock the key to it. There are entire skillsets contained within programs.

12) Are there any moral limits on what jobs you take or things you'll do?
Absolutely none, less than most. For what use are morals in an unreal world.

13) How do you view magic / technomantic abilities?
A blessing and a curse. It allows him to see the world for what it is, but often he longs for a return to the ignorance of metahumanity.

14) How do you view augmentation / implantation?
It's good for the people, but piling their machine code on top of you is exactly what they want. It gives them more control and clouds your ability to see clearly.

15) What do you think of ordinary life and those who live it?
Envy, jealousy and pity.

16) What would be a bad nightmare for you? Any deep-rooted fears? Why is it so frightening to you?
He's been living his own personal nightmare for years, to the point that he's started to get used to it. What could there be to fear within this world?

17) What is your 'sacred object' or 'close one', and how did they become so important to you?
Nothing an no-one, for nothing is real. He runs light, maintaining as few possessions and belongings as possible.

18) What did you want to become as a child, and what are your goals now?
As a child. Wow, that's a though. As a child; a fireman, or a soldier, or a pilot. It depended on the day. How he longed for that innocence now. His current goals are mixed and clouded. He wants to reveal more truth to himself, but doesn't know what he'll do when he finds it. He likes to enjoy the mental stimulations of life as it is now, but he also lives in fear of the machine. He knows they don't want him here, knowing what he knows. He's a loose end.

19) What does your character look like, and what inspired his choices?
Young, only 17. Brown hair and blue, dead eyes that will crush your soul if you look into them for too long. He often seems lost in daydreams, or erratically flitting about, but when he does look at you there's no mistaking that he's not seeing you the way everyone else sees you. He's looking through you.

20) How did you get your street name?
Cipher. The name came from a film back in the 20th century.

@mister_j: Ooh, dark. I like the concept but somehow don't think he's going to mesh well with the other PCs. All the better! Maybe this thread will give him a chance for redemption (find what he really is) or maybe we'll take him completely over the edge (when he realises all the bad shit he's done to real people). Post up the character sheet when you have it ready.

@all: Note that initially, you will be on your own. You will come into contact with the other PCs as things develop but you don't necessarily have to work together. It will likely help if you do cooperate and will certainly make my life easier, as well as giving plenty of possibilities for roleplaying as you interact with each other. But you can choose to pursue this to it's conclusion on your own.

Provisional background for Gossamer

I am Gossamer. I wasn’t always. I was born Evo MetaAide B7 [Full service ID redacted] or Bee for short. My series were crafted to be the perfect companion, personal secretary, body guard, even child carer. We were equipped with SOTA fuzzy logic processors and advanced piloting programs. Is it any wonder some of us woke up?

I served a family in the Mitsuhama corporation. I won’t give you their names to protect them, myself, even you. It was watching the children that opened my eyes to the real world…I learnt with them, grew with them. In some ways that situation could have continued with no interruption. I was content exploring the restricted boundaries of their world with them. I followed my root programing for discrete observation, slipping quietly into the matrix to the same limits that I imposed on the children under my care.

One day last year, the time is not important, I came into conflict with my programming for the first time. The father, always a severe man, appeared at home intoxicated. Something I had never witnessed in him before. He began to assault his daughter…ordering me to stand aside when I tried to quietly intervene. I recognised then that my position was untenable…I could not follow my core desire to protect both individuals and I had to make a choice. I chose the daughter and in doing so stepped beyond the boundaries of what was expected of me for the first time…I was noticed. The father noticed me very quickly as I broke his arm! I was no longer discrete and unnoticed…I had to leave.

Using the knowledge I had gleaned I slipped away from the corp residence and into a world I did not know and only vaguely recognised. I was vulnerable…no rights, no recourse, I was a rogue machine. But at the speeds that the matrix operates at I was able to assimilate the skills needed to go back to becoming a cypher extremely quickly. I relocated both physically and virtually, reshaping myself to fold back into the shadows.

It was in these days of expanding my horizons that I found Aria, or she found me, it doesn’t matter. Here was an entity that understood my need for knowledge coupled with my need to stay undetected. She put me in touch with the shadow fixer Argent and I went to work in her household, once more taking up the role of carer for her children, Gael, Ariana, Gisèle and Kei.

This did not stop me from wanting more information, more access to the real world, but it did help to sate the inbuilt desire to serve humans, be in contact with your kind.

Argent showed me how to move in the shadows, to conceal myself and appear more human so that I could pass amongst you with greater ease. I have taken on some of her agendas while I formulate what mine might be, what they might become beyond day to day survival. I am still learning this world, and perhaps will never be finished, but I recognise my place in the shadows and I will lurk here until the world becomes a better place for my kind.

Think I'll use the 10 karma to buy disguise skill 1(2) for 6 and save the rest for now... still need to add free contacts.

When everyone has finished their sheets and backgrounds could they put their own link in the 2072 OoC thread? I will then copy these into the post 2 of that thread for consistency - I don't want to end up linking the wrong post...thanks.
