Hello,

I've been a Shadowrun gamemaster for many years now started playing 1st edition, started GMing with 2nd, GM'd multiple campaigns in 3e but fell out of touch with 4e. I'm back now with 5e, and while I've never run a PbP game, I've just gotten involved in one, and I like the feel of it.

I am also blessed/cursed with a job that requires me to sit at a computer 8 hours a day with loads of free time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) So I can tell anyone who plays that I'll be able to post very reliably (and even on the weekends I usually am able to spend a bit of time in front of the computer.

I'm interested in running a game set in Denver, the Front Range Free Zone using 5e. I'm looking for mostly mundane characters - i.e. deckers, not technomancers, samurai rather than adepts. If you want to play a mage, I would prefer an aspected magician rather than a full mage. This doesn't mean that I don't want ANY magically active characters, but I'd prefer a group that was mostly mundane with one/two magically active rather than the other way around. Combat is not the primary motivator in the campaign (although there will be plenty of chances, should you want it) - so I would recommend a blend of skills rather than having the Firearms Skill Group at 6 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Sounds like a fun departure from Seattle. I'm already in one PBP game, but I'm kind of grating at the slow pace and I imagine that it might only be a mini-campaign, only one basic starter mission.

-In 2059, finishes his enlistment then signs on with Triple Canopy (PMC) at the urging of a former Marine buddy
-Spends the next 10 years working in the Philippines and Indonesia for Triple Canopy
-In 2069, Leaves Triple Canopy and joins up with an indy merc outfit that is subcontracting for Executive Outcomes in South Africa.
-Stays with indy outfit until late 2074 when a job goes very wrong outside of Cape Town. Only Cole and one other friend survive, but then just barely.
-Cole is hospitalized for a several months in Denver while he recovers.
-His medical bills end up eating most of his savings, and he has developed an addiction to pain meds
-Currently, he is looking for work as he is almost out of money. No PMCs are hiring, so he is having to look in the Shadows.

Cole Westbrook grew up during the late 30’s and 40’s in the economically depressed town of Gulf Breeze, FL. Secession from the UCAS hit many of the Southern States particularly hard, and Florida was no exception. Cole’s father worked in construction and was rarely around. Cole’s mother worked where she could find it…waitressing, cleaning houses, babysitting, and whatever else she could find. Cole resolved early on in his life that he would escape the poverty of his home town, and he found that escape by joining the CAS Marine Corps after his 18th birthday.

Cole initially took to the Marines like a fish takes to water. He worked hard, trained hard, and enjoyed the camaraderie amongst the men of his platoon. He enjoyed being outdoors and was happiest when his unit trained in the field. He also quickly built a reputation for being able to drink any of his fellow Marines under the table. The story behind his nick name comes from one particular evening where his whole platoon was out drinking. They decided to see who could do the most shots of Tequila before getting sick or passing out. At the end of the evening, Cole was the last one standing. His bar tab showed 30 total shots, thus he earned the moniker “30”. In reality, Cole really only drank about half that…but he started putting other Marines’ shots on his tab to inflate his numbers. Needless to say, he never revealed his secret to anyone, and the nick name stuck.

Eventually, Cole began to lose interest in the Marines. The CAS wasn’t deploying any forces in the 50s, so there no action…just training. Cole yearned to put his skills to the test in real life engagements. His opportunity came in the 6th year of his enlistment. Don Hardin, Cole’s former Platoon Sergeant, showed up at Cole’s doorstep with an offer he couldn’t refuse. Don left the Marines and was hired on by a PMC called Triple Canopy out of Reston, VA. The PMC had contracts all over the world, and the work took Don to real hotspots where he saw actual combat. Plus, they offered salaries far in excess of the CAS Marine Corps. Don told Cole that Triple Canopy just won a large contract in the Philippines for complimenting their military forces in hunting down insurgents, revolutionaries, and other sorts of troublemakers. Don said that Cole fit the candidate profile perfectly, and that they could hold the position open until Cole finished his enlistment, if he was interested. Cole was thrilled, and jumped at the chance. He accepted the offer, and shortly after his enlistment period was up, he was off to Manila.

Cole spent the next 10 years (2059 – 2069) working in and around the Philippines and Indonesia. He spent most of him time in the field, and saw more than his share of firefights. He also trained extensively in Escrima with the locals. The close combat skills he developed served him well, as many engagements were at CQC range, and often times involved hand-to-hand combat. The work in the Philippines aged Cole, both mentally and physically. He saw first-hand the atrocities of war…the horrors inflicted on the civilian population as well as the loss of close friends to enemy ambushes. As time went on, the rules of engagement for Triple Canopy’s contractors became more and more restrictive, while insurgent attacks became more brutal, and more frequent. More and more contractors lost their lives every few weeks, and the remaining survivors began investing their money in augmentations to increase their odds of surviving.

By his 10th year in Philippines, Cole was ready to get out of dodge. Several of his fellow contractors (including his mentor, Don Hardin) felt the same way, so as a group, they resigned from Triple Canopy in order to form their own outfit, dubbed “Results, Inc.”, and headquartered in Denver. Their first job came along very quickly. They were to subcontract to Executive Outcomes in South Africa, providing security to many corporate interests in and around Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The ensuing six years were lucrative for Results, Inc. They were paid well, they ran ops they way they wanted to with little, if any, intervention from EO, and the work was far less hazardous than the Philippines, at least until late 2074. A well funded and well coordinated strike against an oil production facility that Results, Inc was protecting ended up costing the lives of whole Merc team, save Don and Cole, who was grievously wounded in the battle.

Don was able to get Cole stabilized and evacuated to a local medical clinic. From there, he was flown back to Denver for months of surgery and physical therapy. Cole had amassed a small fortune as a contractor, he ended up having spend almost all of it on his medical expenses.

As a side-effect of the major injuries he suffered in South Africa, Cole has developed an addition to pain medication. Every so often, he gets intense headaches, and always keeps a bottle of pills handy. Currently, Cole has recovered to about 80% of where he was before his injury, but his is almost out of cash. He needs to find work if he wants to eat, and the Shadows of Denver are beckoning.

Background

So there was this kid... he was about 8 when his Mom set him up with a sweet career track with Ares in Detroit. He was gonna be a wiz engineer, as he was way ahead of his class and could figure stuff out just by looking at it. He loved guns and war movies, so he'd fit right in at Ares. Up until then, he had lived in Chicago, born just after the Sears tower came down. His Dad was in the tower. So living in Chicago, post-2039 with no dad was not ideal. Yet, he always managed to put a hopeful spin on things. That's why everyone called him the eternal optimist. Then just an optimist, and eventually, just Opti. The fast track with Ares seemed great for two years, until a dog started talking to him. The dog claimed to be Opti's Spirit totem, and that Opti was a Shaman, and that he could wield magic. Dog led Opti away from his cushy career track, and as a result, away from his family and their good graces as well. He ended up in Seattle around 10 years old in 2050. Led by Dog, he made powerful and influential friends, at least as far as shadow-people went. And he learned from many of the best.

He developed an insatiable curiosity for knowledge and the application of that knowledge... a path that led him first to many dark places, but then to some measure of enlightenment. In Opti's case, this led him to a policy of not killing (which he adheres to most of the time), and eventually to a form of neo-anarchism. He hates nations and corporations with burning passions, and lives to see them taken down for the hurt they cause and continue to cause others. Unfortuantely, by the time he was 16, he was unsatisfied by the slowing pace of the knowledge he was taking in, and felt like he needed more. As a result, Opti began experimenting with Deepweed. With his mind even more astrally awakened than normal, Opti began to astrally venture as far as he dared, each time going further and further, assensing everything he could, running the shadows as his "day" job so he could feed his habit. Those were dark years, and Dog tried, ever more forcefully, to sway him from the path, granting Opti with ever more increasing hardships, such as gremlins, a spiritual beacon that made fire spirits hate him, and finally, ironically, an allergy to the same Deepweed he loved so much. But Dog eventually forsook him. It was then that he was approached in a dream by Raven, with an offer to replace Dog as Opti's totem. Raven explained that he had long waited for an opportunity to snatch Opti from Dog, but doing so overtly was... untoward, so now, without causing it, Raven was simply taking advantage of the unfortunate events. If Opti wanted more knowledge than he could possibly imagine, Raven could supply it. So Opti accepted Raven as his mentor.

Much later, and after much trying, Dog spoke to Opti one final time. Dog had never forsaken Opti, but simply wanted him to be better. When Dog finished speaking, Opti took the lesson of Loyalty that Dog had tried to teach him, while fully embracing that he had been a Raven all along. He asked Dog if he could get rid of the curses and if he was ok that he was now a raven. Dog replied "yes" to the second, and with a low, growling laugh, he replied "no" to the first, and vanished.

Opti became a ravenous shadowrunner, taking every opportunity, not only to hurt corporations where they hurt, but also to gain whatever small bits of knowledge he could along the way, in order to hurt them later. In his spare time, he organizes Neo-Anarchist cells after his fashion. With help from a few of his decker buddies, he maintains a pirate, anarchist radio, broadcast for neo-anarchists on the matrix.

Visiting a Neo-Anarchist cell in Denver, Opti has decided that this town is ripe for the movement, and the leadership isn't strong enough yet. He decides that he can do a lot of good here for this fledgling cell, so he is gonna stay a while, running the Shadows to see what he can see, and hurt the man however he can. He has gone back and forth, trying to kick his deepweed habit, with various success, but at the moment, he carries around deepweed cigars which he smokes liberally, unless he is on a job... and then only sometimes...

Ten years ago, Danny Black was the next big thing in the trideo business. His amazing good looks and tough demeanor landed him numerous action-star roles, and his love of cars led him to insist that he do his own stunts. His hometown of Austin Texas shone through in his trid characters, usually a surly-but-sensitive cowboy type, the sort of person that's never actually existed in real life. He got damned good behind the wheel too, and knew how cool it made him. He felt invincible. He was in that bubble that incredibly attractive people live in, where trouble seemed to slide off him and everyone had unlimited patience for his antics.
At the top of his game, he attracted the attention of the mob. He liked to party, occasionally needing "supplies" that one couldn't exactly have delivered from a shopsoft. He paid his debts, but eventually, through casual conversation at first, the idea was brought up that Danny could do a little wheel work for them on the side. Danny was thrilled at the idea. Being a stuntman was one of the sexiest professions a man could honestly announce to a pretty girl. Being a wheelman for the mob was one of the only things he could think of that was sexier.
He got himself a gun, a big six-shooter like the cowboys used. He wore a fancy white leather jacket like in a movie he saw once. He switched out his sports car for a sensible model with a souped-up engine. For a while, he did good work. Everything was cool, the mafia were as chill as they get, and Danny was living the dream. Then one of the mob enforcers got stupid, calling down the heat on a job Danny was running. When it came time to decide whether to pick the guy up or get away clean, Danny left the enforcer flapping in the wind. The mob wasn't happy.
The week after that, Danny was driving for a Trideo shoot. When it came time to brake for the big stunt, he realized the extent of his mistake. The brakes were cut, and the walls weren't getting any farther away.
Danny survived. Not all his limbs did. He got a real nice prosthetic, but it was pretty much the end for his acting career. There's plenty of pretty people waiting in the wings to get themselves filmed and beamed to a holoprojector near you. The mob considered them even after that, but Danny never quite got over it, as one might expect. For a while he wasn't sure what to do with himself. He honestly considered suicide, but this was largely a matter of poor imagination. A low-level mob guy, one Danny considered a friend, set him up with some retired enforcers who had set up as shadowrunners in Denver. Danny felt right at home in that jigsaw puzzle. It offered just about everything he needed; a place to get lost, a place to start over, a place to reinvent himself. He used to think the only thing sexier than a stuntman was a mob wheelman. Well, he was wrong. Being a shadowrunner was the sexiest job in the world, and he was pretty damned good at it. Danny's back on top.
