My friends and I were talking it over and we thought a fun concept to try out would be making a troll pro wrestler turned shadowrunner.
I mean, imagine for a moment having Hulk Hogan or the Ultimate Warrior along on a run! Not necessarily effective, brother, but the potential hilarity ensuing would be awesome. So I decided to make this thread for people to throw ideas at and see what sticks. Obviously they'll have a high performance skill and distinctive style (it's kind of what being a wrestler is all about) along with good unarmed and a high strength and body. But that's not important. I want awesome themes for this pro wrestler, brother, and possibly a reason he turned to the shadows. Suggestions? PS: Snap into a Slim Jim! |

I don't actually have suggestions, but I did actually have an amusing concept similar to this that I never quite finished building.
Instead of a professional wrestler he was a famous masked Luchador devoted to meting out Justice. This was originally conceived of with 4E in mind, and the idea is kind of a Reverse Batman. The character would have the National or Global Fame positive quality (possibly paired with the Day Job negative quality), representing their public ring persona of "El Guapo" or what have you. No one would actually know the Luchador's true identity, they would just know his stage name and his "bringer of justice" Luchador persona. The mystique of no one knowing who he really is would be part of the appeal of the act. His "real" identity would then be his shadow identity, where he fights a very different kind of fight and brings a very different kind of justice. The values of noble courage and righteousness his ring persona champions don't mean much in the shadows, but then again the things you choose to do as a runner can actually have a major impact on the world around you, unlike the ultimately hollow stage fights of the ring. That was part of what I originally imagined as getting him into the shadows, actually. He'd been leading this successful life and career for a while, caught up in the whole crazy whirlwind of being a famous entertainer (while also carefully preserving his private identity behind the mask), but he eventually undergoes a sort of Siddhartha Gautama experience and his eyes are opened to the injustice and suffering of the world. He has a crisis of purpose, feeling that he's been living a lie, pretending on stage to fight for noble causes but in reality doing nothing to help the world. He does a lot of soul searching, and decides he can't live with himself like this. Throwing money at various charities feels hollow and he knows it ultimately doesn't change things. He's losing sleep, losing his mind, when suddenly he starts hearing a voice - and that's when he finds his path, following The Dragonslayer. From that day forward, he just started suplexing his way through the criminal underworld and never looked back. ~Umi |

So this got me interested in working on the concept again, and I went for reference videos on youtube. Hoo boy, there's OODLES of stuff up there - with a surprising amount being Japanese!

I've been expressly forbidden by both of my gaming groups from making a luchador. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/indifferent.gif)

Both?
There's either something you aren't telling us and they have good reason to stop you, or you play with a bunch of miserable whinging killjoys. In either case, I advise making an empassioned and heartfelt plea for permission - preferably masked, topless, and dripping with sweat and oil - expressing the depths of your desire, the purity of your heart, the righteousness of your cause, and the might of your bulging muscles. Then, in a display of courage, skill, and fortitude, you should release your most passionate of battlecries, then heft the two GMs - one in each hand - and gracefully perform a dual flying pile driver into a bed of rose petals, all to the dulcet tones of an accompanying mariachi band. ~Umi |

Your pro wrestler needs the Negative Quality, Incompetent [Stealth]. Always yells at the top of his lungs when speaking, and plays a short rock anthem (fire pots optional) whenever he enters a room.

They like to avoid anything that holds a tendency towards doubling the time lost to combat. I started by wanting to play a Luchador out-of-genre (Pathfinder, Drow rogue), and then I was just blanket-forbidden. They would not allow me to have the mask. That's one group. I have no idea why they wouldn't let me do Lucha with my other group. Unfortunately, I lack rose petals, a mariachi band, and the upper-body strength to crush their resistance and make them accept my impassioned character. |

Both? Alex Louis Armstrong from FMA is just one mask and a mariachi band shy of going full Luchador.

The wrestler would work great alongside the Pito system of '70s LA.

After watching 'Shaolin Soccer' a couple of years ago I made a Soccer Adept for SR3
He was quite good at sports and his main weapon was a football (8L damage only but iirc 22 Dice to attack and a Range of 180 Metres) With a Soccer Dance Medicineman |

When I have trouble maintaining my sanity, I occasionally will create a fake fight between two Shadowrun characters and narrate it. I've done 5 so far. Since you asked about trolls, Here's one with "Brick" the troll vs "Twitch" the elf. This version was 4E rules; I've got the one I did for SR5 in my sig.
http://forums.dumpshock.com/index.php?showtopic=31700 -DrZ EDIT: Actually, the one in my sig is the 6th one I did, A pit fight between a SR5 character with a monowhip vs. one with a cyberspur. I did do a 5th edition "Friday Night Fight" boxing match though, here it is: http://forums.dumpshock.com/index.php?showtopic=39932 |

The wrestler would work great alongside the Pito system of '70s LA. That's a genius idea for a pink Mohawk game, a bunch of players trying to raise their P.20 to astronomical levels. Bring over the pseudo rules for caped crusaders/superheroes and it would be a blast. As for the character I would go with stats being highly important. He would need a ridiculously high bod, Str, rea, and agi as well as moderately high CHA (cause really, have you ever seen a non charismatic wrestler? Even the bad ones are charismatic in the same way that ugly people in tv/movies are at best Hollywood ugly, except Steve buscemi) Possibly A: Stats B: Magic/Nuyen (adept or or cyber) C: Race D: Skills E: Magic/Nuyen |

A style of play, often over the top and very cinematic with big explosions and storms of bullets.
The more outrageous the better, high visibility and little to no subtlety/stealth involved. |

Well, subdual Combat was VERY Strong in SR4.
It used pure strength not STR/2 for damage, if i recall correctly. So you have a point in using it. Even against Spirits. |

So, I logged in just to resurrect this thread.
I'm totally stealing this idea, but making it as a sort of a joke character. My last character was a supremely munchkined mystical adept that was better than most of the rest of the group at their chosen roles just by being. Granted, this is partially due to a lack of understanding in some of the players (our technomancer is an idiot, for starters), but I still felt bad for alternately taking away the spotlight or being blamed for our group screwing up because since I was best at [whatever] and I gave the second best a time to shine...ah, heh. Right. Not that I'm bitter. Back to the character. I'm playing a minotaur luchador named El Toro Negro with the Incompetence (Stealth) and Reduced Sense (Partial): Hard of Hearing defects. Also, Evil Twin, but that's mostly for the WTF factor. Thing is, due to the fact AGI is capped at 5(7) and Unarmed Combat is AGI, I'm actually a pretty terrible wrestler: even with a specialization I'm only at 13 dice without tricks. So my question is this: What tricks should I be running? I'd prefer to be a phys ad without ware since my GM uses RAW concerning essence loss (reduces both max and total, so having that fifth point in MAG would be 25 BP) and I'd like to actually be useful as something other than a bullet sponge. I'm not too familiar with subdual combat and CTRL-F has proven useless to me, so some help there would be appreciated too... |
