Oh and Sedna and Bandit- No impatience or irritation or anything remotely negative with either of you. That's just Dragon's thoughts, not his player. Just a friendly clarification so no misinterpretations. :)

Behold the typical North American low-Cha gamer. Notice how he flounders about while attempting to emulate the decently high Cha of his chosen persona, in a way that few other player/persona matches can emulate. :P
(Edit) Now observe as he natters blithely on about his own incompetence, defacing himself for no good reason. :please: :D |

Of course, much of that floundering about is because I've currently got the understanding and comprehension abilities of a gnat ... and I'm his GM, he's got to write it to my level :wobble:

Again, nothing towards you Bandit, I know you've been out of town and are catching up. But come one, Dragon doing all the talking in a tense spot? You just knew he was gonna be thinking that. :)

Sorry Winterrat and Sedna, your posts moved too fast for me to catch up at the moment. Virgil is in the game now! I also have more conversation to do based on Kiki's next move.

Fyi only Dragon had the italicised perception. All Virgil saw in the Matrix was that single twitch.

Ok. I don't see either the parts for a smartlink or the predator on your sheet. Where did you get them? Two successes on each test means that it's going to take you twelve hours to make the modifications, which is a day and a half of work given the standard 8 hour workday. If you need to acquire the parts, give me an etiquette roll. |

A general ultra-teensy pet peeve, please don't anyone take it personally :)
I know "smirk" seems to be the Word du Jour ... but do those of you using it so frequently actually know what it means? Because it's not just another synonym for "smile" ... and at least for my players, if I took it at its actual connotation, you guys would be in a heck of a lot more trouble than you already are :) (Look it up on Dictionary.com.) This post brought to you by the background webmistress, who's only mentioning it because she's been seeing it an average of once in every 3-4 posts (which seems rather a lot), and because there's an awful lot of NPCs out there who have at least some skill in reading others! |

Well, I believe that I used it correctly? Scrapheap was self-satisfied with the lame joke he internalized. Though I didn't do a thorough search I can only find it in one or two other posts in both IC threads, so it must be some pet-peeve! Kind of like my own for people who say "supposeBly." Man, I hate that! Grrr!
Ps-WinterRat, I'll have a reply up soon. |

Oops, link didn't work -- fixing it now. Yours is one of the more accurate uses, Scrapheap. However, the connotation is not only self-satisfaction, but (much more powerfully) "affectedness" -- hautiness, conceitedness.
Seeing your post, I got curious. Since I'm actively webbing and debugging for this part of today, I did a quick wordsearch count across the five random player pages I've currently got open. I came up with twenty-odd mentions. (So I over-estimated the frequency, previous post.) I'll also reinforce that yes, it is a personal pet peeve (I work heavily within connotation); and I'm a writer and editor, so these things tend to jump off the page at me. Mentioned. Eased the gritting of teeth on my end. Over. Okay? :) |

I'm pretty sure my use of the term wasn't wrong either, but I could be wrong (it was a *friendly* condescending self-assured smile! :)). Like I said, I'm coming into this *looking* for criticism of my writing style, since I already know it's bad, so if you have anything to rant about in that regard please don't hesitate to rant to your heart's content; we'll all end up the better for it. :)
And I completely understand about the pet-peeves thing. Mine is "axe", as in "Can I axe you a question?" I've got a tutoring student who uses that all the time--a sixth-grader--and it grits my teeth each and every time I hear it, which is quite a lot considering I tutor him and he has lots of questions to "axe". :P My other little pet-peeve, mostly coming up in that other game, is over the difference between magical "enchantment" and "enhancement." It always irks me that people try to "enchant" their swords; how the hell do you cast a love spell over a sword? I don't give a damn what the book says, if you tell me you're enchanting your sword instead of enhancing it I'll have you waste a day casting Charm Person on it five times and wondering why it doesn't like you better. :P |

I guess I wasn't aware of the dual meaning. I've always assumed that it was an either/or thing. I'm editing my post! The character is certainly not conceited, and I don't want it coming across that way. Thanks for pointing it out. BTW, if bad writing makes you grind your teeth you might want to either stop reading my posts or get yourself a mouth-guard! ;) |

Heh. I feel like I'm re-enacting a Princess Bride routine: "I do not think that word means what you think it means". (Actually, in the subjective sense that word does: it describes a concept he literally can't conceive of. It's only when that's extrapolated into an objective "truth" that it breaks down and turns ironic.)
Ehn -- most of us aren't about to be Nobel Literature Prize laureates, but I've not encountered any bad writing in this thread yet, and I've seen quite a bit of good writing: and trust me, I've seen a lot of bad writing in "real" life, so I have a basis for comparison. I've said here before, and you guys will have noticed by now, that I'm quietly editing typos and things like "its/it's" as I'm translating thread to webpage; but I think I mentioned this here mostly because I can't change a word that's tone-important, not if it's to be a true translation. Also bear in mind that I'm reading each of your posts at least three or four times as I'm back- and cross-linking; so everything that's there becomes automatically magnified out of all proportion. Interestingly enough, the pronunciation 'aks (an example of metathesis: two consonants next to each other switching places) has been considered a legitimate -- if "substandard" -- dialectic variant for quite some time now ... so long as it doesn't translate into spelling in "formal" English. (An interesting link) I'll venture a guess that your student is either mid/deep South American (call it a rectangle due south from Kentucky/Arkansas), or with strong Black inner city influences (and those seem to be cross-Atlantic!). |

Karma guidelines are up in the Guidelines thread. I will fix it for more clarity tonight or tomorrow.
Paul, Sedna, Bandit, and myself- discuss with your GM retraoactively applying your training times for karma expenditure, since we're the only ones with enough karma and longevity to need to be 'grandfathered' in, such as it were. Paul, shoot me a PM if you have any questions. I have a lot of work to do today so I may not be able to really post or reply to people until tomorrow, just fyi. |

Bclements, Ecclesiastes: Post as desired until reaching/entering the cemetary. I'll put up a setting post at that time so you know what the area is like and can decide on your entry tactics.
Ecclesiastes: if your looking for info on the gangs in the area, give me a computer roll for the search. |
