I think he meant "we don't sell them... To individuals." smile.gif

Russia, on the other hand... You walk in with enough dollars/euros/whatever they'll take, they just hand you the keys to a shiny new MiG-29. Or a crate of AKs, or body armor, or military fatigues, or night-vision gear, or rations, or whatever you want. You want a brand-new tank? Yes, we take checks. Yes, you have to wait for it to clear before you can drive off with it."

It's really kind of understandable. Plus, there's a very easy way for the U.S.A. to prevent the terrorists from aquiring all that stuff.

Walk into Russia and start buying. I'm quite sure we could find a use for AK-Ms and MiGs. T-52s, probably not, but since they really don't pose a threat to our military on the battlefield, we don't much care.

Actually, that makes me wonder. We know Osama's rich, why hasen't he started buying MiGs? Probably he can't get anybody who can fly them?

I dunno. Oh well. smile.gif

Support infrastructure, actually. Maintenance, storage, spare parts, fuel. Aircraft require fixed installations: runways, hangars. Those places are vulnerable to destruction. A mobile, guerrila force is something else entirely.

the United states military doesn't sell surplus equipment like jets/tanks/helicopters.

they mothball them or make sure they are destroyed.

the russians, on the other hand... biggrin.gif

Then explain countless countries having F-4 Phantom IIs.

because those were fresh-from-the-factory EXPORT versions. not US military surplus. same thing with the Iranian's squadrons of F-14s, and the israeli's F-16s.

They generally destroy the key components to stop them working, although that didn't stop some bright spark being able to cobble together his own private AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunship from spare parts on the surplus market before they caught on.

heh, that's because most of the parts in an AH-1 are Huey parts, so they really aren't hard to get ahold of (lots of civilian hueys flying)

The saddest day in aviation was when they decomissioned the F-14.

No. It was the decommissioning of the SR-71 Blackbird.

No, it was the day they scrapped the English Electric Lightning. They still have one of those at the local airfield. Fixed to the ground by steel and concrete but it still looks as impressive as ever.

...damn, I actually built a model of the Lightning when I was a kid. Also, saw a Buccaneer do a demo at an airshow many, many years ago as well as a Victor and Vulvcan. The Vulcan had a Blue Steel strapped to its belly. Damn fine aeroplanes all.

Of course the prettiest to ever to grace the skies was the Vickers VC-10. Sheer artistry in engineering. (& the Russkies stole the design for the IL 62)
