Skillwires - I'm confused about the cost for them, what is the Mp max part talking about? How do you determine that value?

Knowledge & Language Skills - are these limited by your Intelligence, which is listed as the default attribute?

When NPC stats are listed, they have the format of:

NPC/Professional Rating

Followed by something like:

Equal/3
Inferior/2

What in the blazes do these things mean, and where are they explained?
Siege
For the knowledge skills.

You get free Knowledge & Language skill points equal to your Int x 5. These skill points can _only_ be spent on Knowledge and/or Language skills, not active skills.

The "general" skill points you get from character generation can be spent on Active or "Knowledge & Language" skills.

Any clearer?

When purchased, choose a maximum total MP and maximum skillsoft rating for the system; these determine the total rating and total size of all the activesofts a character can use at any one time." SR3 p.301

Skillsofts have a Mp size. First take the skillsoft rating and square it (multiply the rating by itself). Then take the square result and multiply by the appropriate multiplier. General skills have a multiplier of 3 while specializations have a multiplier of 2. This gives the Skillsoft Mp size. Cannon Companion has options that can increase or decrease this size.

But a basic Rating 5 activesoft needs skillwires with a minimum 75Mp (5*5*3). Knowsofts and linguasofts do not require skillwires.

If you wanted to slot a rating 3 and a rating 2 active soft, the skillwires need a minimum of 27 (3*3*3) + 12 (2*2*3) = 39 Mp.

Info on SR3.296 and 223.

They are linked to Intelligence but can exceed Intelligence at a higher cost. Initial cost on SR3.57, impoving skills cost is given on SR3.245

The NPC rating is explained in the Shadowrun Companion 3 starting on page 83. It is a scale that compares to the PC party, so Inferior to one team may be Superior to a low power team.

I think the Proffessional Rating originated in the first Shadowrun Companion, and somehow the numbers got lost when it was put into SR3. The description for each number is on SR3.249, but listed as Average through Professional. The number basically is the wound modifier the NPC will take before surrendering. 1 - Light, 2 - Moderate, 3 - Serious, 4 - Well, you got to kill these guys to get them to stop, and sometimes even that won't stop them.
