Mr.Platinum
Yes, it frustrates me when year after year i see another player making a wolverine character.

So far the most interesting Ripp off i've seen is Van Helsing, nothing like a group of ghouls with one Van Helsing in the mix.

but for NPC's i find my self making up anime/movie.book characters for example.

Gally from Gunnm.

Alex Rain from Nemesis

Your Mom in 3 men and a Geisha.

The Hero from Dragon warrior one????

and one Wario as a decker.

Share them all, let me see your anger.
Jrayjoker
Well, Wolverine plays a very important role in my games.

I have Mr. Motley from China Mieville's "Perdido Street Station" as a high end free spirit NPC fixer with Karma sharing kind of like Gaf.
Ancient History
Molly Millions clone.

One particularly rabid Robocop clone named Cyberstar. I let him do it just so his ass would be owned by the corporation.
JongWK
"M" from James Bond's movies. Nothing like a witty old fixer that looks & speaks like Dame Judi Dench.
Mr.Platinum
Wow CyberStar that is tottaly awsome.
warrior_allanon
phys mage based off Yuske Yurameshe (Yu Yu Hakusho)
street sam based off Vash the Stampede (TriGun)
phys ad based on Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer's "Tombstone" portrayal. was my first character ever played)
Decker that uses Witchblade as her matrix persona
working on
Mage based on Edward Elric (Full Metal Alchemist)
Mage based on Harry Dresden (Dresden file novels)
Combat rigger/phys ad based on Soske Sagura (Full Metal Panic)

ok, so i have a few that still need work and refining.

you just ful of Anime rip offs , rock on bro rock on.
CountZero
Well, my first Shadowrun character was a rigger based on Oddball from Kelly's Heroes, though he eventually turned into my own character (as after the first run I became rather paranoid against Aztechnology).
BishopMcQ
Phys-ad changeling--based on Bloodrayne.

Warrior--For the Dresden, are you going the ally-spirit homunculus route?
warrior_allanon
havent decided yet, i'm actually thinking of making bob an free spirit talismonger/fixer for him

TimeKeeper
Drake Hardedge, for those of that have been around that long, was my cabbie decker.
Totally ripped off of Drake Edgewater from Quarintine and it's sequel.

Hardedge has since come into his own and the game's gone into obsecurity, so I'm safe.

I once made a Snake Plisskin/Solid Snake clone for a Merc-theme game I was running. Also had about a third of the AIM roster from Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games in there as well. (This was before MGS1 but after Escape from LA)

Most of my ideas are original. biggrin.gif

Or so far into obsecurity that no one knows they're rip offs. wink.gif
Birdy
Nice/Evil rip-off NPC from various games

+ T.J Hooker and crew when I need beatcops that have some background/substance. Hey, Verhofen (Robocop) can do it, so why not me wink.gif

+ Hunter/McCall for his plain-cloth counterparts. In SR Hunter is an Ork.

(Hammer/Doreau if I feel like overdoing it)

+ If I need plaincloth with more style I end up Making Peace

+ Mike Hammer for the tough, self-reliant privat eye

I still like the shotgun final from "The Girl Chasers"

Based on a mix between the TV series (for Hammer) and the Spilane books (For Velda - I hate the Lindsay Bloom variant!)

+ Rally Vincent, Mini May Hopkins und Riding Bean for Gunsmith/Bounty Hunters/Drivers

Fast cars, hot chicks and lots of explosions

+ Miller from "Guns of Navarone" / "Force Ten" for a demolition expert

More the movie version from Force Ten

+ Q for the absent-minded tech. Bonnie Barstow for the more worldly version (Or a rigger)

+ Doyle and Bodie from CI5 (there is only one) for Hitman/ProAgents

+ If in doubt, three classy ladies and an overweight coordinator come in handy as thiefs/investigators

+ Cloony/Kidman from Project Peacemaker for an investigator/hitman team

+ My FBI agents always look like Denzel Washington or Sidney Potier

+ My "High Thread" street cops always end up looking like Judge Dread (Stalone version)

+ Gunny Thomas Highway and Feldwebel Rolf Steiner if I need NCOs

+ My slimebags always end up looking like Legolas

As player characters I basically went through most of the characters from "Bugs" and "Mission Impossible" (the Series!) as well as a version of John Reno in "Wasabi"
ash_wednesday
Ok..these two ripe off that I can remember were not form SR but from Rifts. They were Xena and a Predator. The campaign didn't last long.
evil1i
Had a friend who made a physad based off Deadpool! He had a geas on most of his physad powers that only worked whilst wearing the suit and even took a skill in combat chatter that allowed him to utter more words in his action phase but they could only be wise cracks.
FrankTrollman
Several NPCs in my campaign actually are characters from other Shadowrun-like settings. Rally Vincent and Minnie May are street samurai that make guest appearances sometimes. Brick Top showed up as a gangster (that the PCs eventually shot). Dr. Akagi was a guest star as a scientist working for an unnamed UN contractor (basing its operations in the AGS, Imperial Japan, and Antarctica).

Several other characters are "played by" various actors. One necromancer named Bolt was played by Bela Lugosi, while a particularly overbearing sarariman was played by a boistrous Gene Hackman. The movie that is your Shadowrun game can as expensive a cast as you want it to.

Player characters are usually made similarly. One biochemist character (Glenn Swayne) was based on Glenn Michaels from Out of Sight and The Dude from The Big Lubowski (except with concocting deadly nerve gas and lecturing people about "Wet Noise").

I'm running a crime based campaign in St Louis. My PC's are in the employ of an independant contractor named Solomon Greene.

Greene is played by Harvey Kietel, and we're all grateful.

Thatīs what I call a good rip off! biggrin.gif
Straight Razor
(Rurouni Kenshin) samurai X
phyAdept with a katana
Catsnightmare
Yep done that, have both a D&D monk character I actually played and a half completed Physical Adept rip off of Sagara Sanosuke from Ruroni Kenshin
Adarael
Ripping off Kenshin is no good. Dr. Akagi is pretty good, cuz it's relatively obscure. Snake Plisskin/Solid Snake is walking a line.

Mike Hammer, though? Dude, feel free. Kiss Me Deadly set the freakin cinematic noir standard. It'd be hard to make a hard-bitten detective and NOT rip him off.
stevebugge
But if you made a detective rip-off of Frank Drebin that would be pretty funny.
The Stainless Steel Rat
Have created:
  • The Stainless Steel Rat (Naturally)
  • Yoda (Who hasn't? But only as an NPC. You have to break some rules for Yoda - He's fucking YODA!)
  • Neil McCauley (Yes, I'm another Heat Fanboy - but isn't that a requirement around here?)
  • Danny Trejo (see above)
  • Marv and Miho from Sin City
Have played with (created by others):
  • Wolverine (am I the only one who hasn't made one? Is that another requirement around here?)
  • Spidey
  • Johnny Mo from Kill Bill
  • Various Predators (damn Blur power...)
  • Gerald Tarrant (from the Coldfire series by CS Friedman - one of the cooler rip-off's I've played with)
  • M.D Geist (Broken, broken, broken... but neat. At least he was played well)
  • Jesse Ventura's Blain from Predator (How hard is that? I have a minigun. I chew tobacco. I think I'm a hardass. I'm Blain.)
  • Shiva from Streets of Rage
  • Various incarnations of Solid Snake
  • Vash the Stampede and Wolfwood
  • The Darkness (from the Witchblade series. I'm pretty sure both the Witchblade and the Angel were supposed to be in that campaign too, but it ended before they showed up.
  • Lady Death

That's all I can come up with right now, but I'm certain there's more...
khazad
At the risk of showing a different type of Geekiness....

A rigger/techie based on Reginald Barkley (ST:TNG)
A PhysAd/detective based on Arnold in Red Heat (forget the character's name)
An elf Wizard based on Tuvok (Star Trek Voyager. "I cannot understand why I seem so stiff.")
A Dog Shaman based on "Bones" McCoy. ("Damnit, I'ma Shaman notta Physician!")
A Fixer based on Gul Dukat (just seems to have that slimey, smarmy attitude!)
A Street Sam based on Hawke (from Spencer for Hire - Avery Brooks)
A Street Sam based on Agent Smith from Matrix. (I wear Sunglasses. I talk slow. And deliberately. I enounceate every word. You must fear me.)
And my worst ever character was a smuggler loosely based on Han Solo with a Sean Connery Voice.

Hey, I never said they were GOOD ideas, just ideas that i've thought of and tried. smile.gif

Frackula
Arise, thread!

I'm not very original when it comes to these things. I have created:
- A mage based on Penn, and a samurai based on Teller
- A high level NPC based on Howard Hughes (after he went flippin' insane)
- A psychic based on Yuri from Red Alert 2
- A Russian street doc based on Borat (Sasha Baron Cohen based Borat on a Russian doctor he knew)
- A detective who narrated his life in Dragnet form (Jack Webb)
- A decker named "Ralph Numbers"
- A "Cube shaman" based on Gene Ray the Timecube Guy

Hmmm.... I think I'm gonna rip off the gang unit from 'The Shield' and use that in my campaign as npc's.
Gridlock
One of my first characters I ever played was Gridlock

An odd clone of Howling Mad Murdoc from the A-Team.
He's a lunatic with entirely too much knowledge of firearms and explosives with Vietnam syndrome and no inner sense to tell him he's gone just a smidge too far.
LupiniusAngelus
Wait, wait, wait. Am I seriously the only one who's made a sammy based off of Richard B. Riddick? Or a physmage based off of Quai-Chang Cain? Or (from Kung Fu: The Legend Continues) a tech/weapons specialist named Kermit?

Well, except for the last one...probably not.
Gridlock
Yup... Your the only one. smile.gif
Ankle Biter
Rip off characters you say...

Rock Lee from was the one I had most fun with. It was ace watching NPC's jaws drop when a 13 year old kid started kicking their asses.

I have seen

Spike from buffy done badly
Spike from Cowboy Bebop done well.

OH please post his stats. I wanna see how you did this.
Goliath
How about this one, I used him in a game A fixer that talked and looked like Uncle Benny from Lethal Weapon 4.

A very memorable character!
HMHVV Hunter
I admit I do rip off characters, but I try not to make them a carbon copy of the character. More often, I just base their mannerisms and personalities off of characters and give them a hook in the game world that would fit that personality.

Right now, my trend is Malcolm Reynolds from "Firefly" (I'm playing a Werewolf LARP where my character is a "Shadow Cowboy" with mannerisms based off of his, as well as a smuggler character in Shadowrun with the same). He's a great archetype for a charismatic type, I think.
Wiz In Red
My two favorite I saw on the list are Gerald Tarrant and Malcolm Reynolds. I love both their respectives series...I've used Tarrant in D&D (I know, I know), but I never thought to do it for SR.
Krashlocke
Some of the best that I've played or GMed have been:

Ze Mole (from the Southpark Movie) - demolitions

Manji (from Blade of the Immortal/Blood of One Thousand)

El Mariachi (from Desperado)

Major Kusanagi (from Ghost in the Shell) - as a physad, anyway - couldn't quite pull off the cyborg...

Spike (from Cowboy Bebop)

Samantha Caine (from The Long Kiss Goodnight)

...and of course, Wolverine.
Muskie
I've got a GitS Section Niner as my game's Hacker, and a Tuxedo Mask Bear shaman. don't ask...
Tattered~Seraphim
I've played a few rip-off characters, I admit, but not yet in a SR game... well, I have one planned that's been inspired by a few characters. But I won't say who's he's based on yet. So far, I've played an Alucard from Castlevania female-ized clone in a BESM game; my first ever lrp character ended up accidentally looking like Legolas; and my Vampires in Public (a small lrp system) character has a history inspired by Alucard from Castlevania's (created her at the same time as my BESM character). I've also had an occult bookshop assistant who was obsessed with vampires, and used to try and act like Drusilla from Buffy, in an Unknown Armies game. She ended up genuinely crazy and locked up in a mental hospital, hehe, as she deserved.
Voran
Jack Burton is a fun attitude to use for a character. But you tend to need to have a more capable character skills/stats wise, since you don't have the protection of 'story character' to keep you alive smile.gif
LupiniusAngelus
Quite possibly, the funniest character I ever saw was a physad with a gaes to activate his powers, which were Improved Reflexes 2, Attribute Boost: Quickness and Strength (rating 4), and Improved Skill (Swords) 2.

It was pretty funny to see him in game standing up and yelling "By the power of Greyskull! I HAVE THE POWER!!!!"

Vash is a scary SOB. That said, I would likely make him an Adept with a bit of cyber.

I'm not much of an anime/manga afficionado, but if I remember, the dude from Fullmetal Alchemist has a serious "short guy" complex.

"You're calling me SHORT? Nobody calls me short!"

"Dude, he's a troll."

"So?"
hyzmarca
I prefer complete transplantation with some tweeks to remain within the game's flavor rather than rip-offs. If I were going to introduce Godzilla as an NPC, for example, he would be the Godzilla and not just a generic giant radioactive mutant.
Kiedo
As primarily a GM I tend to keep myself entertained by adding characters from various things to my runs. I write freelance in RL, and use alot of my own characters, but some characters I've ripped off would include.

Walter O'Dimm - mage who pops up every now and then to harrass and help characters (he's from Stephen King's Dark Tower Series)

The C'thulhu - a really creepy horror (from the various works of H.P. Lovecraft)

Sherlock Holmes - a lonestar detective (obviously from the works of Sir Arthur Connan Doyle)

Roland Deschain - dead eye sharpshooter (also from The Dark Tower Series, I also tried to make him into a PC)

To sort of pay homage to the creators of the characters, I never have them fight the characters and always have them as epic characters in my runs, but none that must be faced in order to complete the run.
Shadow
I have a friend who played Takahashi from johnny Nmemonic, complete with monofiliment in his pinky.
Rock_Bottom
I have an elf technomancer who shows up in the Matrix as Batgirl. Not the new one... the Barbara Gordon version. Her Attacks are mainly Batarangs, and all her complex forms are "removed" from her utility belt. When she's actively hiding from a patrolling IC, she pulls her cape over her head and such... it's pretty fun to play.

I made a "smuggler" character, inspired by the art in the book. Her name is Red Sonja. Once we got the "Where are YOOOOOOU?" jokes out of the way, she was pretty decent. She wasn't a rip-off of Red Sonja, though. I just liked the name. So her name is SOnja, and she dresses in red.
Akimbo
In my experiences playing and GMing I have come across:

4 Solid Snakes (Metal Gear)
3 Wolverines (X Men)
2 Cyborg Ninjas (Metal Gear)
1 Spike (Cowboy Bebop)
1 Alucard (Castlevania)
1 Richter (Castlevania)
1 Vash (Trigun)
1 Leon (Resident Evil)
1 Kaneda (Akira)

I have ripped off:

B.B. Hood (Darkstalkers)
Greg Graffin (Lead Singer of Bad Religion)
Naga (Slayers)

Extra Karma to anyone who can make a credible rip-off of Gordon Shumway

QUOTE (stevebugge @ Jun 9 2006, 01:08 PM)
Extra Karma to anyone who can make a credible rip-off of Gordon Shumway

Without deviating from SR canon or the live action series, I most certainly can. However, this will require ignoring the cartoon. If I included the cartoon canon I'd have to seriously deviate from SR canon but it is doable.

------

Gordon Shumway, dwarf, was a face and a damn good one until the comet passed and he grew a snout and a thick coat of orange fur. Overnight he went from being one of the best negotiators in the business to an unemployed freak. His desperation led him to more and more shadowy clients untill he finally took a job that he should have passed up. Captured by Ares Macrotechnology, Gordon was subjected to bioware and genetech experiments that gave him 7 extra stomachs and psychotropic conditioning that wiped out his old memories and replaced them with a comfortable 200-year-long life on the planet Melmac.

As part of an elaborate revenge plan agaisnt the UCAS government for the sabotage of Ares' Mars mission Gordon was sent into space on an experimental craft that bore more than a passing resemblance to a classic Caddilac. Carefully forged radio signals brought the craft to the attention of the UCAS military while suggesting that the passenger was communication realtime with something lightyears away and the genetic manipulations performed on Shumway would make it impossible to identify him as being metahuman.

But Ares' ebaborate planning was for nought. A ham radio signal interferes with the craft's guidance systems and Gordon crashes into the garage of the Tanner family who quickly grow attached to the "Alien Life Form" and sucessfully hide him from the authorities.

Due to his intense psycotropic conditioning Gordon has a taste for cats and is a skilled bouillabaisseball player.

i'll often use characters as a dm/gm, but rarely do i play a rip-off. admittedly i'll use some cool features of characters, but never carbon or all-but-carbon copies.
but i've used (or was going to use before the campain got glitched); Jason bourne/david webb. from the bourne identity (book, not movie)
i'm going to play a path of the magician adept that i must have unconciously cloned from constantine. he's a greek magical investigator and talismonger. uses his knowledge to stop supernatural threats.
i even named him constantine before i realized i'd made a clone:p
The ubbergeek
Lessee...

I had a Golgo XIII (old-school manga and anime 'uberassassin', perfect sharpshooter).

A guy like bounty hunter Randoom Hajiles of the classic Sega CD game 'Snatcher.

A few Fist of the North Star-esque punks and martial artists.
Gabriel (Argus #2323)
I once did an ork version of Sascha Konietzko. He had "Rip the System" tatooed in huge letters on his back.
