Full Version: Dunkelzahn's corporate grants.

The biggest ones are about 20 million nuyen, and even assuming that nuyen are worth 5 times the value of the dollar, that's barely enough to cover R&D for many of the bigger projects, like the artificial metahuman flesh. Are the grants goals in and of themselves, or is the point of the grants to make it easier for companies to produce the items and offset the costs, sort of like tax breaks?
Ancient History
It's nickel-and-dime stuff for AAAs, but to a little mom-and-pop corp that makes a breakthrough, a couple million nuyen would go a long way toward getting a product to market (or get them noticed by the media, which would up their stock price. Or get them noticed by a AAA, which would swallow them whole.)

Yeah... As far as grants go, 20M is a huge amount of money. Plus, look at the discussion related to Wuxing. 200M to a AA doesn't seem like a lot, but 200M in cash can leverage a hell of a lot more capital.

Dunkelzahm was a firm believe in encouraging small corporations to pursuit their projects in contrast of taking over what looks good. His aim in his will is for the small time corps.
Basically, Dunkelzahn owned large amounts of minor corps which he kept secret to preserve their independance. He found that once thinktanks and such are part of a large corp, their bothered more with looking good to their superiors than with getting work done. By investing instead of taking over he meant to keep this spirit.

Also, I would think that fullfilling one of Dunkelzahns projects from his will would be highly prestigious. Not to mention that quite some of the projects are moneymakers in themselves. Between the Draco Foundation, the UCAS goverment and the tripple A league, there would be quite some people interested in giving work to "the team who finished Dunks goals". And if it was just for PR reasons. The prices are just a way to get the message across.

Big D made a nice speech once about how the big guys -despite claiming to be "pushing the envelope"- are really the ones who work to maintain the status-quo, because it keeps them in power. Meanwhile, it's the smaller guys who need a leg up that are hungry and willing to take risks. Now where was that?

Hmm... interesting perspective to apply to D's relationship with Mr. Knight, now isn't it? Did D think he was a sellout? "You used to be cool before you went triple-A, man."

+1

You think there's not gonna be some publicity around any of his dream-projects coming true? You think Knight Errant or Lone Star (whoever wins) isn't gonna do some nose rubbing if they come up with the truly non lethal weapon first?

The money's a nice bonus, but the publicity and attention is the real draw.

Which, of course, bring in a lot MORE money.
