Radio Signal Scanner: The radio signal scanner locates and locks in on radio traffic from RFID tags, wireless networks, and other transmitters, and is especially useful at capturing signals originating from nearby. The scanner can also measure a signal’s strength and pinpoint its location.
Treat the scanner as if it were a Sniffer program (see p. 227) equal to its rating; see p. 225 for rules on detecting and intercepting wireless signals.
QUOTE
Detecting Wireless Nodes
Locating a particular active or passive wireless node within range (or all of them, for that matter) takes only a Free Action, no test required. Commlinks routinely scan for new nodes, so finding one is just a matter of looking it up. Finding a particular node in a crowded area might be more difficult: make an Electronic Warfare + Scan (variable, 1 Combat Turn) Extended Test against a gamemaster-determined threshold based on the difficulty of finding and selecting out the node in question.
QUOTE
To perform an Intercept Wireless Signal action, make an
Electronic Warfare + Sniffer (3) Test. Once the signal is intercepted, you can monitor the traffic and even copy/record/forward it without making any more Intercept Wireless Signal actions. If you want to block out some parts of the traffic or add in your own, you must make an Edit action.

So, according to this my Radio Signal Scanner doesn't help me actually find the frequencies, but I can intercept them.

Questions:
--Can I intercept signals without finding the PANs that they are being transmitted from?
--If the scanner is mounted in a drone, is the rating capped by the pilot of the drone since it acts as a program?
--If I simply place the scanner in a handheld device, is it limited in any way? Nothing says that I need an OS on a device that runs a scanner.

yes
no
no

Its a standalone device, no matter where it is.(drone, handheld)

All wireless-enabled devices come with a built-in Scan 1 program. So it can attempt to find signals, but its rating doesnt' help it.

where did you get that from?

Yes, can everybody list page references for their quotes. The rules listed look to be very helpful, but would be moreso if I had page numbers to show my GM....

Radio Signal Scanners are in the sensor gear section.

Examples to think about.

If you get a Camera and add the Vision Enhancement at rating 3, and then you place this sensor in a car, which can contain a lot of sensor gear, with pilot rating 1 is the vision enhancement rating capped?

If a PC has int 1, would the Vision Enhancement 3 be capped at 1?

Most rolls are Attribute + Skill + Mods = Pool, I'd categorize sensor gear into the Mods. e.g.
Attribute = Agent(Capped by OS) = Pilot(System)
Skill = Program(OS/Pilot)
Mods = cyber/bio/magic/gear(Sensor gear)

Thanks, I didn't have my book on me, but I was pretty sure I wasn't making this up. smile.gif

I use the radio signal scanner to intercept wireless signals (like radio chatter), which can then be decrypted. So you can listen in on enemy broadcasts, Undetected!
