Full Version: Initiation Grade and the Magic attribute

Ok, by the rules the Intiation Grade is limited by your Magic attribute, which is (the natural one even) increased by your Initiation Grade, so basically this limit is completely nonexistant.

How is this supposed to work?

Initiation Grade <= Magic minus Initiation Grade?

How does Essence loss figure in here?

Does it only reduce the total by one, or by two (reducing Magic itself and also the maximum Initiation Grade)?

That's not quite correct. Initiating raises your Magic Attribute cap, but not your magic attribute. So it's possible for a character to be a grade 3 initiate with a 3 Magic Attribute, and no cyber. If that character wanted to Initiate to grade 4, they'd first need to raise their magic attribute to 4. (Their cap, incidentally, would be 9.)

It just means that if your Essence ever dips below 1 you can't initiate anymore, no matter how high your Magic gets. Which is a silly little limitation, but that's mostly what it means in practical terms.

Well, okay, it also means that you've got to sink karma into upping your magic attribute once in awhile, or else you won't be able to initiate after a certain point. But really, in practical terms it's kinda a non-limit, certainly nothing on the level of the hard caps you see on skills and (other) attributes.

Ah, you are right there, of course. I was basically mixing together the raise of Initiation Grade and Magic, although you can do the first without the latter (not the other way around, tho, once you hit the limit).

But it's correct, that Initiation Grade is technically unlimited then, yes?

Technically, yes. I believe that if you live long enough (like an Immortal Elf, or a Great Dragon) you can easilly hit double-digits... if you spend lots of Karma.

On a semi-related note, I allow skills and skill groups to go above 6 after character creation, but I double the cost for every level above 6;

QUOTE
With Aptitude      ; 2* to get skill 7, 4* to get skill 8, 8* to get skill 9, 16* to get skill 10, etcetera.
Without Aptitude ; 2* to get skill 6, 4* to get skill 7, 8* to get skill 8, 16* to get skill 9, etcetera.

Applying the costs for "With Aptitude" to raising the Magic attribute will allow for Magic 6 quite easilly and dedicated types to get a 12, but it'll cost mega Karma; an impractical amount for those that have only been studying for a few decades.

"Aptitude" (Exceptional Attribute) doesn't work for Magic, tho.

Oh yes... it's surely not on the cheap side of things, but given how powerful a raising of Magic is, that's certainly ok.

It's not silly, it's burning out.
