Or depending on what you're looking for, you can always go
HERE too. We can all be a little rough around the edges, but I myself would love some new blood.

Come to that, Shadows of the Sixth World is always looking for new blood. We play on Tuesday and Thursday nights (two different games).
You've come to the right place, is what we're all trying to say
and there is always the OpenRPG program, if the fix you're looking for is a tabletop simulation style (ya know, where its live, but you're not all in the same room sorta thing)

Dude, how does someone actually get involved in these games? I'm out in the Federated States of Micronesia for 2 years with no RPG gamers and time zones and internet availablility messing up any possibility of chatroom gaming. Slow-paced gameplay on this board would be ideal for me but I have no idea how to actually get involved with a game. Like, I look in that forum and see a lot of OOC threads but I'm never sure how someone is actually supposed to get involved in a game at its creation.

Best way is to hop on, open up the "Sixth World" folder, crank open the "Seattle Metroplex" folder and poke around in there and find a location that looks like you could jump in on.. That's "T6W" and open gaming. Then if you look in the "Private Campaigns" folder you can see the games that are running either behind the scenes, or in T6W.
I'll admit it's a little slow, but I'm
trying to get it some new life

I'm Thais over there, feel free to hit me up either in chat or whatever (that big gaping red 'mouth' icon up top of the navigation window) if I'm on

For a helpful program try Openrpg (if someone hasnt posted it yet...) i used to throw the character sheet a friend made all over the place but lost it years ago (if anyone who remembers my stankin self and has a copy of it get back to me, says made by Kearny).
I havent used it myself for SR but it has done me well in Rifts and D20 games and ive heard it can be setup for SR dice rolls, integrated hex grid is nice to.

Wow, thanks for the tip. I'll have to try that out.
I pretty much only get internet access when I'm at work but I'll also see if I can't get the chat to work for me.
EDIT: Rock and roll, Java actually works, at least from this machine. Not so sure it will work in other places, pending asinine security setups.
It says the server is down, though.

Try it again. The current server's a piece of crap, but it works 99% of the time without any problem and the warning .. isn't.

I personally would recommend www.rpol.net . Not just Shadowrun gaming, but there are a number of SR games there.

Well, whatever you choose, be sure to tell me so I can join too
if more than two people PM me to show their interest, i can run a quick game on shadowland, just to show some new people the ropes. there'll also be some experienced players mixed in to help carry things.

Man, I just tried registring on Shadowland again and got the server error.

I wonder if it has something to do with the firewall I'm behind.
it very well could be. checking to see what ports need to be opened for you to access it. not sure whether you'll be able to swing getting them opened or not, but at least the knowledge will be there to tantalize and torture you for the next two and a half years.

Well, basically, I have two at-work venues to access the internet. In one of these venues I'm friends with the IT guy. So, I'll have to try it at that second venue and I could possibly have him help me with that.
(I guess the problem is I'm not sure that Java is installed at that second venue. Oh well, more stuff to overcome, I guess.)

Since someone's already asking about online RPing
I also have a question... err... questions
How the hell does it work
Do the PCs roll or Does the GM
Do the PCs simply say things like: I pull out my gun and train it on the door. "Who is it?"
Or do they have to go into some story telling narrative. "Something didn't feel right, i pulled out my Ares Predator. She's gotten me outa of plenty of jams before... blah... blah.. blah. blah"
How does it work?
Do i have to have all the books with me when i play, what if i only have SR3 Core book...
Someone explain please...

Chuck, I think all places are different, I can really only speak from a RP on Shadowland perspective. Keep in mind we're still playing on the SR3 system and the mechanics are geared in that direction.
It's Java/HTML based. It's really designed to be what you make of it. How much you "write" descriptively is how awesome (or lame) your RP experience can be. We have a dice roller on there that both the GM's and PC's can use.
While it helps to have books for specifics and character creation (You can post up your own sheets in HTML online in your user folder, there's no generator on the site) it's not necessary. Usually veterans and GM's can help people with specifics/rolls/etc. on OOC pages.
You can either post in The Sixth World which is kind of "freeform" RP (though some Private Campaigns spill out or take place in there as well, but if they're in T6W, you're kinda allowed to interact with them in my eyes at least, if they want no external interaction, they can post to private campaign folders). Or like I mentioned, there are "Private Campaigns" that can take place entirely out of T6W and in any setting the GM designs. Keep in mind that anyone can GM a game in Private Campaigns, and there are a few Superusers and Site Veterans who own pages that are "hotspots" in the Seattle 'Plex who want people to show up (within reason) and freeform RP and will interact with almost anyone who comes in. In theory they're the GM's of their own locations. Common courtesy rules apply on other people's pages, play it smart and most people will be cool and respond. Come on with an UberMunch and just assume because you're "THAT GOOD" that you can get away with anything and people will jump on your ass and call you out on it.
There is a lot of flexibility in T6W for people to make locations/residences/etc. as well to suit RP needs/wants.
The other interesting factor of SL is that we also support World of Darkness and Planescape games on other "worlds" inside Shadowland itself.
I'll take off my tour guide hat and just offer to answer any other questions that I can if people have them

*ahem*
The Shadowland Newbie GuideThe Shadowland FAQDave wasn't just on the cutting edge of SOTA - he helped build it. SL was a better form of the Shadowspawn Guild, which was a cgi-bin site (kind of like DR was). More than nine years ago he switched Shadowland to run Java, building The SLCAPI (Shadowland Client API). The current client is eight years old, and remains one of the most technologically-advanced RPG gaming sites on the web.
according to the SL tech guru: "You need to be able to make an outbound connection to port 8500 to log in (and 8501 to use chat). You don't need to have any inbound ports open. "
here's a quick example of play on SL. you've got the
in-character page, and the
out-of-character/dice page (click "view previous comments" if you want to start at the beginning). in this particular example, the GM is using the name The Sixth World to post in-character--you can have multiple names, on SL, and many of us have a name we use for GM posts or posts in general that are not from any specific character. for instance, the guy that plays Richie
posted a few times as The Way It Is, to differentiate between stuff Richie
is doing and stuff NPCs under his control are doing.
