Full Version: looking for the stock market

A few years back i was in this one group where the GM used a set of rules for using the stock exchange in the game. this way the players could buy stocks for some of the corporations and make money on the side that way( or lose depending on what happened). i didn't buy any stocks at first until i figured a way to manipulate the stocks in my favor.. then there was my profound good luck as well. i bought all the stock for a company that was in line for either a corporate buy out or bankruptcy, something like 1 neu-yen per stock... every game the gm would rule for the stocks and my stocks would continuly skyrocketed, he would roll the highest possible numbers- like i said i'm lucky. then i sold off my stock when it was around 1,000 neuyen each.. i did some other things to help the company out as well.. like send them care packages and stuff full of new tech stolen from other megacorps.
my question is, are these rules in one of the SR3 source books or are they found on the net?
SL James
No, they aren't in any book. The closest you'll get is the rules for Brokerage X in Loose Alliances and the rules for altering corporate ratings in Corporate Download.

nothing official. I think the old 2nd ed corp book had some explanations of the stock market. Nothing I'd use at work but fun for a game.

and for those who don't know, yes I'm a licenced financial advisor.

There's some information in Corporate Shadowfiles, FASA 7113. Ther is a chapter, Rating Corps, starting on page 109, right after one of my favorite art concepts, the troll in a hot tub surrounded by half naked women from Ellen's Escorts.

Like I said, the same information for 3rd edition is in the Game Information chapter of CD.

There was some discussion of this earlier. Basically it came down to start with the ratings in Corporate Download and devise a system you like.

ok, i thought it was something like that, but thought i should check just in case.

right, that's the bit I meant.

I could see teams taking short positions on companies they are making runs against -- and then being caught by the patterns of their long and short sales. cool.gif

after my one group started to use the rule for the stock market, i liked to see how far lone stars stocks would fall each time i frek them... once i made them drop a whole 26 points in the span of 5 mins. i think it had to do with the thieft of one of there armor cars that was found a few days later stripped like a mustang in the getto. cement blocks and all. the funny thing is that the news found the armor car first.. thanks to me. so the whole debacle was televised.

Wah-hah-hah. That sounds like a good run.

Nothing like fragging the 'Star, eh? smile.gif

BTW, how exactly does short-selling something work? I know it's basically saying "I think they're going to take a dive, so give me money, and if I'm wrong and they make money, I give you money," but how EXACTLY does it work? How did that get started?

And, of course, it's a good idea if you don't make too big a habit of it and get tracked by your patterns.
Brahm
Short selling is entering into a contract to sell stocks at a given price a given amount of time into the future. The idea is that if the market price drops you'll be able to pick them up on the market cheaper than what you are getting paid to fufill the contract. You pocket the difference. The downside is that if the market price goes up you are spending more than you are getting paid, so that extra money comes out of your pocket.

Yeah, but... Who in their right mind would take that kind of a deal from a Shadowrunner? smile.gif

That all depends on how good your fake SIN's credit rating is wink.gif
shadowfire
i always have good fake SINs... otherwise their worthless for long term usage.

ya, i was refered to as a ratba$%&rd all the time by the GM for all the crapp i use to pull. he even made me simi-turn my special ops character into a decker to get the amount of ready cash i had on hand down...
