Full Version: Plots from Movies?

The movies Domino and Ultraviolet were mentioned in another thread, and I was wondering:
What movies offer useful plots (with some tweaking) for SR?
I don't want this to be a movie critique thread, so let's discuss only the plot elements that are useful wink.gif

These are simple jobs, with interesting complications (OK, Oceans 11 isn't simple, but you get the idea):
Snatch
Lock, Stock, 2 Smoking Barrels
Italian Job
Ronin
Oceans 11
The Immortals

Ideas for getting runners together:
Band of the Hand (for gangers wanting to move up)

Put the runners in a tight spot:
The Cave
The Relic

Anybody else got some ideas?

If you're into vehicles, perhaps Gone in 60 Seconds. Aside from the actual driving part, there's plenty of room for infiltration, hacking, etc.

HEAT (High level crimes)
15 Minutes (Media, thrill crimes)
8mm (Rotten society, detective stories)
Seven (Rotten society and it's dark mirrors, detective stories)
Rising Sun (Running in the shadows of Japanacorps)

I love heist movies and would galdly use them as SR adventures for those teams that don't have an average of 3 IP and enough cyber to set off airport security five blocks from the airport.

Several have been mentioned so I will only add one more: Entrapment.

Sneakers and The Usual Suspects both have interesting twists along the 'screwed by the johnson' motiff.
Hard Rain (i think) had a lot of yak nuance

You know, there are about a kajillion movie threads in the "Shadowrun" forum easily accessible via the Search function.

Psycho for when the runners are hiding out after a run gone bad.
P.P.Lemonade
The ultimate plot to base a Shadowrun on.

Thanks for the tip.

I did a search before I posted, but didn't see anything like I posted here.

The Island is a good example of a shadowrun movie/ plot. A corporation loses its product, it will cost the company literally billions in defense contracts and possibly force the corporation to shut down if the company is found out that its product is HIGHLY illegal, so they hire runners to contain the situation, quick and quietly. Also, you have high tech gear (it is set in 2029, but the technology is on par with 2070), and you have 'the runners' utilizing runner-style techniques to catch the 'product,' namely, using fake badges and vecro style 'Police' tags to try to conceal their true operations, and using a decker-type person to monitor police activities.

Also, my shadowrun group so wants the jet cycles from that movie. wink.gif

I have used "surviving the game" (or any of the other action movies with that plot) as a basis for probably a half dozen on the spot SR games.

I've played the story from the first Species movie as an SR adventure once. That worked really well. smile.gif

A little more than halfway down this webpage is a movie you can download called The Corporation. It's a documentary so it has no plot, but the information can enhance your game as it'll increase your understanding of the history of corporations and how they function.

Rotten Tomatoes review here. 91% FRESH!!! eek.gif

The Island

Premise: Megacorp (Probably Aztechnology) builds an underground complex where they house clones of anyone important. Guy has a bad liver? Remove the clone from the population, harvest the liver, then sell the rest to Tamanous (or ghouls).

During the time that they're there, the clones provide a low cost and docile population of wage slaves who don't even get payed.

In a sick sort of way, I can see DocWagon looking at the idea ...
JongWK
Black Rain
Blade Runner
Escape from New York Chicago
Predator
Alien vs. Predator

If you are running a pretty street campaign nothing beats The Warriors.

Can you dig it?

Caaaaaaaannnnnnn yooooooooouuuuuuu dig iiiiiiiiiiittttttttt!?
Dissonance
Totally agree with you on The Warriors, Waltermandias. I was just thinking that since both the movie and the game take place in an alternate reality where bad 70s-80s streetpunk is the norm and not the exception?

Well, that, and the Baseball Furies just freakin' rule.

Don't forget Death Race 2000.

I would NOT include Snatch or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (boy, that movie needs a shorter name). While they are about crime, the basic plot before the players get involved is fairly simple and for things to get interesting you sort of need the PCs to be incompetent or very unlucky in some form or another, plus the movie is so good in part because it has three or more different story lines that come together all at once, something you really can't do with table top and can barely do with an online game.

In general I don't get plot from movies, they're too shallow, too poorly defined and too linear for my players. I get plot elements I can mix and match (mostly characters, places or background), but an actual plot? It'd last for fifteen minutes unless I railroaded.
