Tomokazu Yamamoto was the son of a Japanese journalist. His father was dedicated to exposing corruption in the government and was known for carrying through with his reports even in the face of a lot of pressure and intimidation. one day his father took an investigation into links between the Japanese government and the yakuza too far and was assassinated by ninjas.

Tomokazu felt especially crushed since not only did the yakuza kill his father but they basically got away with hurting the public, and at the same time for most members of the general public life continued as normal. There was no grand uprising of the common man to drag out and slay the yakuza for their abuses and contempt for human life. In many cases when someone experiences the death of someone close to them they remark how the death is such a big deal to them but all around life continues as normal. In the case of Tomokazu this feeling was especially acute since it was the public whom his father was trying to help.

Tomokazu decided that the only way he'd ever be able to live with his burning feelings of indignation, grief, and disgust for public apathy was if he could go and one day avenge his father's death; he would hunt down and kill the ninja assasin, the yakuza members who planned the assassination, and the crooked bureaucrats who felt most threatened by the possibility of an expose. As he grew obsessed with his revenge his day to day activities began to feel increasingly meaningless until finally he grew driven enough to seek out a ninja master to train him in the ways of the ninja.

Tomokazu's single minded purpose and superhuman dedication finally managed to impress one elderly (and somewhat senile) ninja master enough to actually teach him ninjaism even though he wasn't actually part of a ninja family. So, Tomokazu spent years training to be a ninja and doing all sorts of 1980s funky ninja drills like hanging upside down from a tree for hours or sprinting fast enough for, like, half an hour to keep a long blue ribbon tied around his waist from ever touching the ground. Did you ever read the "Way of the Tiger" series of gamebooks, the ones that appear to have been researched entirely from Ashida Kim books? Yeah, that's right...Tomokazu got all the good stuff, just like in those books. (Underdogs has .pdfs of the whole "Way of the Tiger" series.)

The problem was that after all these years the Yakuza finally noticed him, remembered who he was, and figured out what he might be trying to do. They sent a small brigade of ninjas after Tomokazu and his senile trainer. Tomokazu was an excellent ninja, but in the words of one of the greatest ninja masters, "Onry a ninja can stop a ninja." And when it's, like, thirty ninjas versus one usually the thirty will stop the one.

So the thirty ninjas beat the crap out of Tomokazu, decapitated his sensei, and threw Tomokazu into a volcano. Fortunately for him, because it was Japan, volcanoes don't actually make you die when they throw you into one; they just make you reappear mysteriously in the sequel. And that's exactly what happened. The sequel is taking place on a boat in the ocean, and Tomokazu is mysteriously there.

Tomokazu had heard that "pirates" have the ability to defeat ninjas, so Tomokazu decided to seek out a pirate and learn the Way of the Pirate. That way when he goes back to Japan skilled in both ninjaism and piracy he will finally be equipped to take his revenge and show the yakuza what for. So far, Tomokazu has learned the secret pirate technique of pulling a gun and shooting someone with a sword before the person with the sword can close to melee range. It makes so much more sense than trying to fling shuriken. Tomokazu is confident that when he learns all the secret techniques of piracy nothing will be able to stop him. He eagerly practices with firearms at every opportunity now.

Tomokazu is taciturn and stoic but this is due to his lack of confidence in his social integration in his new maritime environment rather than because of sterotypical ninja badassery. He is socially conservative with regards to things like clothing, sexual mores, and polite use of language but he is open minded enough to at least respect people who act differently than he does, especially since he's trying to learn to be a pirate. He will try to be present for any major pirating event so that he can learn but he dosen't necessarily say very much unless he wants to ask a question about something he dosen't understand. Sometimes he will slink off by himself and look depressed, with a very expressive frown plastered all over his face. This is because he gets occasional bouts of guilt and self doubt.

The one aspect of piracy that Tomokazu is really enjoying right now is rum drinking because it's analagous to his old sarariman passtime of sake drinking. Tomokazu thinks that he really understands the Way of Swilling Rum.

Male.

2. What is your character's physical size?

Tall but thin, long-limbed.

Medium-length, slightly curly hair dyed a multi-toned sea green - sometimes tied back with a red ribbon, sometimes slightly unkempt; cold grey eyes, and a light tan. He has a tattoo of an anchor on the back of his left hand.

4. What is the character's general appearance (i.e., How does he dress, etc.)?

Drake dresses conservatively - not in a stodgy way, but with an old-style elegance. He would rather wear fine clothing, but if he is wearing everyday clothing, it will tend to be dark and utilitarian, and he favors black mock turtleneck shirts. He tends to look rakishly elegant and a bit arrogant, with a daredevil grin. A slight facial tic appears when he is dangerously close to initiating sudden violence.

Drake was born on a small nameless island just off the Seattle coast, home to the high, foreboding walls of an extraterritorial Renraku facility.

7. What was the character's family life like?

Drake was a bored, cynical corp kid, rebelling against his domineering father, who was a beefy, potbellied security shift assistant supervisor. Drake has dark memories of his childhood, and seeing someone raise a hand to a child is likely to provoke a response from him that is far out of proportion to the actual incident. Drake began hanging around with a bad crowd at an early age - delinquents, go-gangers, and small-time smugglers.

8. Has the character begun his own family?

Drake has no intention of starting a family; he is secretly worried that he would be like his dad.

9. Where or how was the character educated?

Drake got a decent formal education from the Renraku facility, although he learned early on to take any history or politics from them with a big grain of salt. His magical studies, under the tutelage of a sharp-faced old man who didn't even tell Drake his name, were conducted in secret and paid for by his adventures in smuggling and small-time crime.

10. Has the character ever done anything else for a living?

Drake has never done any legitimate work, and wouldn't want to. He was involved in smuggling, mischief with his fellow thrill-seeking corp kid buddies, and small-time criminal activity with the go-gangers he hung out with. Then he had what he calls his "social activist phase", where he got involved in metahuman rights, protest movements, and eco-terrorism. The close-minded rhetoric and callous violence of the latter turned him away from the cause, leaving him more bitter and cynical than before.

11. What are the character's political and religious beliefs?

Drake is cynical politically, in that he thinks that voting and activism will never change anything. The corporations run things, and always will. If you try too hard to fight them, you will become just as brutal and monstrous as they are. The best you can do is be a freelancer, where you may be doing dangerous and clandestine things, but at least you have some say in what kind of jobs you will do... or won't.

Drake is in awe of his intensely spiritual experiences with his magic, but doesn't follow any organized religion - he thinks there IS an afterlife, but doesn't derive much comfort from it. He thinks that the afterlife is such a transformation that you might as well not exist any more - the new existence will have no memories or desires from this life, any more than a butterfly looks back on when it was a caterpillar. So he doesn't care enough to argue with atheists - whether you cease to exist, or evolve into something unimaginable, it's effectively the same thing in the end.

Drake is cheerfully mercenary, even though money does not actually mean that much to him. He will refuse the nastier jobs, although he will excuse it by saying it is "vulgar work" or "beneath him" or "Get a bloody squatter with a street sweeper if you want some little git whacked. I'm a professional." He is extremely cynical, although like most cynics he has a desperate, inarticulate desire for some kind of moral code to believe in again. He is always protective of children, and if someone wants a child harmed, he will not only refuse the job, but is likely to attempt to geek the Johnson then and there, regardless of the complications that it may cause.

13. What are the character's goals? Does he have any?

Drake has no goals at the moment. He has what is very nearly a death wish, and certainly is not thinking about the future. He lives for the rush of danger, and the heady joy that he still feels when he uses his magic.

14. Why does the character run the shadows? (Why does he run the shadows still, rather than getting a "real" job?)

Drake disdains legitimate work, and he has moved up from the small-time criminal endeavors that he did before. He likes the big paychecks, with the freedom to choose his own jobs and set his own hours. The danger, which would be a downside to most people, is just another plus as far as he is concerned.

15. What kind of personality does your character have? This should not necessarily be obviously stated in the background, as it is more important for actually playing the character, but it may color or add mood to the history.

Drake is a thrill-seeker given to impulsive behavior and almost manic-depressive mood swings. He tries to do things with a certain elegance. He has a lively sense of humor that ranges from sardonic to callous, and he likes hanging out with dangerous people.

16. What special qualities does the character possess? This does not refer to skills, but rather to other things, such as how he gets along with people, whether he plans ahead, etc.

Drake is insanely calm in the face of danger. He has a surprisingly gentle way with children.

Drake absolutely disdains drugs. He won't even get drunk, although he will drink socially. "Drugs are a crutch for weaklings. They take the edge off. They blur the sharp corners of reality. I live on the edge, in real time. The only high I need is my mojo and that sweet rush of danger."

Drake despises bullies, and overbearing people in general. He doesn't like corporations or eco-terrorists, but he can put it aside when they offer him work or information.

Drake is an adrenaline addict. He rides his bike at insane speeds, hangs out in dangerous places, and is attracted to the kind of women who scare away most other people.

His full name is Drake Nicholas Morgan, and his shadowrunning handle is Ziptide, with some people shortening it to Zip.

>Brass, Fixer (Level 1): Brass is a peg-legged dwarf who wears the finest fashions. There are various rumors about the peg leg, the two most common ones being that it is a weapon focus with an extendable blade, and that it has a hidden one-shot shotgun with a fireball shell. Brass has his fingers in a lot of things, but sometimes takes a bit extra to get hold of enough bankroll for a major purchase because of this. Dirk appreciates his versatility, though, and has stuck with him for most of his 'running career.

>Soupbone, Go-ganger (Level 1): A rank-and-file member of the Cutters who shares Dirk's love of bikes and daredevil stunts. Soupbone is a useful person to know when you are looking for something at street level, and he is a halfway decent mechanic - not able to fix your bike, maybe, but he can patch it up to semi-work for a few more days. Dirk has known him the longest, since his days hanging with go-gangers, although Soupbone can be hard to find sometimes.

>Putter, Smuggler (Level 1): A small-time operator with a crappy-looking boat that is actually very fast. He is good for emergency transportation and the occasional bit of contraband - not nearly as much of an inventory as Brass, but occasionally something either useful and cheap, or rare and pricey.

They may not get anything accomplished in the end, but at least they haven't compromised their principles like the violent groups have. Drake loves hanging with go-gangers and others who share his love of racing bikes.

He hates his dad, and hasn't spoken to him in years. He is most bitter against Terra Reign, the eco-terrorist cell he worked with for awhile, and dislikes all eco-terrorists. He is not that fond of the NAN. As far as he is concerned, they and the corporations are the same, only the NAN are a bunch of hypocrites, who drove people from their homes into the barrens to starve so they could wallow around in their spacious wilderness paradise. He doesn't dislike corporations and criminals as much, mainly because they are more open about being scum. CEOs who pimp their charitable contributions and Yak bosses who make a pious show of honor earn his contempt, though.

He respects the founder of MOM, a few small entrepreneurs who escaped being gobbled up by the big companies - basically anyone who has actually managed to succeed at something without selling out.

He fears and loathes cults, because he knows how hard it can be to break out of something when you have been indoctrinated into it, and some of them use some pretty nasty methods to brainwash their victims. Getting killed is not a scary prospect, but losing his personality and having this shell that used to be him still walking around... THAT frightens him. He hates insect spirits for the same reason.

Navy blue.

He likes seafood, especially when he can get it fresh at Pike Place. He likes batter-fried fish and prawns and chowder, though - he doesn't like sushi very much. He eats real meat ("real" meaning vat-grown as opposed to soy, not actually coming from a cow), and likes good microbrewery beer, whether it is dark or lager.

He would love to go reefing in Hawaii one of these days.

Sadly, himself, although he is protective of children when they are threatened.

Riding his bike gives him the most pleasure. Swimming and diving are also enjoyable, but they don't give him the same RUSH.

Drake really doesn't like some of the people and groups he has to deal with, but he is realistic enough to know that 'runners depend on knowing people to get jobs, so he grits his teeth and acts professionally at times when he would rather stunbolt the bastards.

When people try to B.S. him, especially if it seems they have been doing it so long that they half-believe it themselves.

He thinks that some of the new 3-D laser-holographic art is phenomenal.

He was part of a sit-in at a university that led to an emergency city council meeting to give the sprawl's poverty-stricken orks a fairer allocation of the utility ration times. That was before it went sour on him...

No organized religion, although he was raised Buddhist. He meditates to calm himself, but does not really practice the philosophy any more.

He loves his bike, and if it got trashed, he would want it fixed even if it cost twice as much as getting a new one would.

> Starts out riding his bike very, very fast, then goes into strange environments, such as flying through the cityscape, riding over the ocean, or soaring above the clouds.

> Nightmare, strapped to a table while an insanely grinning doctor in blood-spattered whites prepares to cut Dirk's head open with a buzzsaw. He holds a mass of squirming wires in his hand, and Dirk wakes up screaming at the thought of him putting those wires in his head. None, although he has had some very wild dates. He likes the dangerous and exotic types of women.

His main apartment is by the docks, an upscale building with a shed that he keeps his bike in. He likes living by the sea. His bolthole is on the outskirts of the Redmond barrens, though. It is a grungier building by far, although his own apartment is Spartan and clean. As well as a bolthole, it is a good place to crash, especially if he is with people he doesn't trust with his main address yet.

For Drake, I wanted to play someone "on edge" without making him a TOTAL psycho. I also wanted to be sure that he COULD function as a professional runner. He is still messed up, but he won't be doing things that will hose up the run for everyone. Although he has some marine skills and abilities, he has no problems functioning out of the water. His stun spells reflect a light touch rather than pacifism. He considers a pistol a weapon of emergency for a spell-slinger, thus the concealable pistol with a small clip.

Background
Grew up in cal free state. Shortly after he turned 16 his uncle Scott came to visit telling stories of adventure as a mercenary. A few weeks later when Uncle Scotts R&R was over Henry left with him to see the world.

I'm a little average for an ork in both weight and height, 2 meters tall and a 105 kilos

My hair is black, and I keep it cut pretty short and have been known to shave it before going out int the field. I've been told that I have gray eyes, but my medical records have them listed as blue. I enjoy spending time outdoors so I'm generally pretty tan.

Usually when I'm on the job I go for fatigues that help me blend in. When off the job, I can usually be found in either cargo pants and a tshirt, or jeans and a sweater.

I was born in room 3 of Our Lady of Grace hospital in Rio Del, California Free State.

I was hatched on July 26 2039.

7. What was the character's family life like?
Up until I was about 10 years old I lived on a corporate farm just outside of Rio Del. Then a tractor trailer hauling industrial stength insecticide overturned shortly before its scheduled stop at our farm. My father and older brother were killed, and I managed to escape with a chemical style burn to my eyes. After the accident the insurance money helped me to get new eyes and to help my mother buy some land near where she grew up. She later remarried and I picked up a step sister who didn't like my mom let alone having a tusker for a brother.

8. Has the character begun his own family?
I've thought about finding a nice lady and settling down. I'd want a couple of kids, maybe two boys and a girl.

9. Where or how was the character educated?
I was raised going to public schools. First in CFS and then in a small town Iowa.

Well when I was 16 I decided to get away from home and enlisted in the Marines. The Corps treated me good, and having actually military experience on the resume helped land me my first merc gig.

Well mom always made me go to church on sundays even thoughalot of folks just went there to be seen.
When I was younger, my dad was a democrat, and so was mom. When she remarried, my stepfather was a technocrat.

Well like all mercs I'd like to live to retirement. But more short term I figure I'd like to just travel more.

Well I don't really see myself as a shadowrunner, but if the pay is right, I could probably be talked into it. I used to have what could be called a real job, but its hard to be a grunt for the government when someone is willing to pay almost three times as much for you to be a grunt for them.

I don't understand the question.

Well I see myself as strong willed, physically fit, capable and motivated.

Well I really haven't found anything that for the right amount of money. I've been paid to do somethings that I really wasn't comfortable with, but I did them and now I know how to deal with the stresses (and how to get a better up front asking price).

I'm not a huge fan of racists and others who oppose my basic right to keep breathing. I also don't care for rapists or child molesters.

Mal tends to dress simply, in whatever clothes will keep him cool and comfortable - which, in the Carribean League, usually means shorts and other summer weather clothes

Mal was born in Miami, in the Soverign State of South Florida, in a small corporate hospital belonging to the Gunderson Corporation

Mal was born on June 3, 2037

Mal's parents were cogs in the Gunderson Corporations company machine. Growing up in a lower-middle class but not too poor family, Mal might have lived a normal life had it not been for his exposure to the even lower classes of society and his anger at their plight. His parents were often at work when Mal was home, making him something of a latchkey kid, but also resulting in him being very self-reliant.

Mal's line of work doesn't leave many options open for a family life, nor does Mal want to have a family at this point - there's too much adventure to be had for that.

The public schools in Miami educated Mal.

When his magical talent was discovered during Gunderson's routine testing, Mal was given a paid internship in the magical labs at one of Gunderson's Miami facilities.

Mal is not much for religion, simply because he was not raised by parents with a religious background. His experiences as a shaman, however, have made him somewhat spiritual, though he tends not to philosophize on it too much.

Mal has a strong hatred of those who exploit people on the bottom rung of society - including most corporations. This hatred extends even to some pirates as well - notably slavers of any stripe, though he finds sex slavery the most sickening. Drugs are a grey area for him, though - if they're sold to kids, he hates them, but adults using them doesn't bother him at all. His mood on drug-running ops changes accordingly, depending on the specifics of the job. Mal has been known to mercilessly rampage through slave ships, killing every single crew member once their main defenses have been taken out or their ranks sufficiently thinned. Mal does take purely "mercenary" jobs out of necessity, but he will never let go of his moral code.

Mal has dreams of living out a retirement somewhere in the Carribean, or on his own boat, captained by him. What he wants most out of life, though, is to answer to no one but himself - to never owe a corporation or a government a damned thing ever again.

Mal pirates and smuggles because he feels it is the only way to truly make a difference in the world. Plus, he could never stand being a cog in the machine - the sheer regularity and routine of that life would kill him.

Mal's personality is rather sardonic and wise-cracking, attempting to keep a light tone when the shit isn't hitting the fan. When the bullets start flying, though, Mal's personality goes into serious-mode. In either case, Mal is driven by his emotions, and tends to wear his heart on his sleeve to certain extents. Mal tries to keep a cool head in tight situations, but sometimes he lets worry or frustration show through

Mal has an amazing ability to lead by personality. He motivates people not through brute force, but because he knows how to talk to people and how to keep their spirits high. He tends to be a "lead from the front" type of guy as well, motivating by example.

As explained before, Mal will not take a slaving job under any circumstances, and have mixed feelngs about drug-running. Something else Mal won't do is turn his back on his friends - loyalty is something that is very important to him, and he behaves accordingly.

Mal's biggest group of enemies is slavers. He also hates criminals like cold-blooded murderers and sex criminals of any stripe.

More than anything, Mal loves freedom. The ability to do whatever he wants with his life, and to answer to nobody, appeals greatly to him. Mal has also been known, on occasion, to be something of a flirt with the ladies.
