Full Version: Another wave of UGE or goblinization?
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
Arkelias
Elves and Dwarves first appeared in 2011. Orcs and Trolls appeared in 2021. From what I understand they appeared because of the rising level of magic, and those races most similar to Homo Sapiens appeared first (an elf being more similar than a troll for example).

I know that Windlings or something very much like them are discussed in brief in the Tir Na Nog book. I also know that in Jack Koke's trilogy we see the first Drake emerging though they suggest that normal drakes won't be around for a while until the magic level is higher.

What about Tskrang? What about Obsidimen? There were also a number of other exotic races from various Earthdawn books that have yet to make an appearance.

Is there any official material showing hints of when these races will return? Failing that have any GMs created rules for these races or addressed their return in your campaigns?

Thanks for the help guys! I am considering having the first Obsidiman be the focus of a series of adventures and wanted to do my homework.

There are some oblique references to things that may be obsidimen in the Siberia section of Shadows of Asia, around Lake Baikal.

one of the changes to shadowrun, since ownership changed from fasa to fanpro, is a moving away from earthdawn. SR is not ED, not anymore.

personaly, i dont want a lot of new weird stuff popping up too fast. the setting is good as it is. UGE and goblinization give us a new kind of racism, that we can explore without offending people with RL racism issues becoming involved. SURGE was a bad idea overall... mostly because it added weird strangeness with no real logic as to why. having the comet produce goblinization and secondary goblinization is good, but catgirls and weird things are not.

the 'exotic races' is probably a non-human sentient, and most of those are not recognized as 'people'. as such, they are not good as choices for PC races.
ShadowDragon8685
I must protest.

Catgirls are always a good thing.

And remember, Shadowrunners are by default not people and not good choices for PCs. They are after all hunted outlaws. nyahnyah.gif

...

Have you read Shadows of Asia? I'm surprised they didn't share writing credits with the folks at LRG.

This reminds me...I've got no experience with Earthdawn, so maybe you guys can answer this. Is the ork/troll lifespan thing a biological issue, or is it due to lifestyle choices? Basically, I'm wondering what their lifespan is like in Earthdawn.

If I remember correctly orks and trolls were virtually identical in ED as they are in SR, including appearance and biology. I'll have to unbox my ED book though.

A few years ago I remember hearing some quotes that these races would not appear in SR. Now from reading some old posts, it looks like the development staff just want to do their own thing is ignore what others have said before them.

I am waiting for Synner and Rob to have some giant obsidimen city rise out of the depths of a volcanoe and become a world power, just to mix it up.

Nothing in the plans for the next couple of years, but it might fit something I've been planning for the not too distant future, volcanoes and obsidimen city you say... hmmm, I'll see what I can do.

Seriously though, I can pretty safely say that FanPro has no intention of reviving the ED link anymore than it already has and there are no plans for introducing any of the other races into the game - according to what Rob said at one seminar we're assuming they died off.

Shadows of Asia did indeed include a number of potential tie-ins (Yakut, Orissa and a few other tidbits), but the vast majority of these would work equally well without ED providing a backdrop.

I've got a perfect candidate location for that:

The Afar Triangle.

It is a volcanicly active area that sits at the north end of the East African Rift System. It is bordered on the Northeast by the Red Sea and on the West and south by mountain ranges, there is some settlement on it's perimeter but it's a lot like Africa's Yellowstone in a lot of ways. It's located in the present day Countries of Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Eritrea.

And it's got some prehistoric footprints fossilized in what was mud

Those of you interested in the whole ED/SR stuff might be interested in this thread, particularly the comments from James Flowers.

And no, I don't know anything about it. But I'm curious what he means. smile.gif

The ED links are fun for those who like to follow that stuff, but these days will likely never reach a point where someone who doesn't know anything about ED feels like they are missing out on Shadowrun material. All the references in SoA are usable on their own as something completely seperate from ED, though oldtimers who want to play the ED angle can do that too.

Catgirls have always freaked me out. I like cats, and I like girls, but I like them separate! Of course, you can always make catgirl shadowrunners...

SR and ED being separate seems like a good thing to me. I don't know why.

What would the stats of catgirls be? +2 to charisma? +infinity to all social tests with anime-otaku?

Platinum:orks and trolls had short life spans in ED as well. Orks live to be about 60 max IIRC, but their lifestlye ususally cuts a good 20 years off. The worid thing is that people the UGE'd (used to be human) have longer life spans. According to Steve Kenson at least.

Also , there is one example of a human that apparently SURGEd in to an obsidiman.

Oh, and obsidimen didn't really go in for the whole 'city' thing.

60? That's close to human lifespan...on average, anyway. the thing that always annoyed me was the rapid aging thing...just kind of turned me off from wanting to play an ork or troll. After a couple of in-game years, I'm having to worry about incontinence diapers and get spectacles? C'mon.... biggrin.gif

yeah, most orks died by the time they were in their 40s. But the Denizens of Barsaive book (V2) has an ork chica that's in her early 60's (and she hits on the elven scholar interviewing her. good stuff).

The good part is that in ED, you don't have to worry about diapers. They don't exist! So just crap your pants and smile. The smell makes your more fearsome. sarcastic.gif

Before you go off on a whole idiotic anime thing, mechanics for SURGEd characters appears in Year of the Comet. Seriously people, stay with the real of the game, and not cartoons.

Or...you know...just stick to humans, elves, and dwarves. You don't have to worry about being too big to fit in a standard vehicle, you live longer, and you get along better in most social situations. smile.gif
Grinder
Sure. Dwarves fit into a normal-sized car and an ork not. Or can use normal-sized chairs and tables. Or toilets. biggrin.gif
Oracle
Dwarves use toilets? o_O
Grinder
They had at least the possibility when they climb onto a normal-sized one biggrin.gif
Oracle
Hey, dwarves even fit into normal toilets...

I knew about the life spans of orks and trolls... I guess the candle that burns twice as bright burns 1/2 as long, but that was one thing that I never really understood, was why the different races had to have different lifespans in shadowrun. (lifespans were determined before ED appeared on the scene) but it didn't make any sense to me.

I didn't know about someone surging into the obsidiman, but the whole YotC just never happened in my games. I did want to do an "island of Dr Mareaux" or however you spell it, where there are human animal hybrids but they would be genetic beasts, and isolated to a small area.

I only played ED once.... didn't really remember much about it, I didn't remember if they were solitary creatures.... but I did remember hearing about a floating armada of ships.

Really? I spoke with a couple of folks at the FanPro booth at GenCon this year, 'cause I wondered if the whole ED tie-in thing was just going to die, what with new companies & all that. (I don't think it was Rob, but my memory's all fuzzy now. It was someone with multi-colored hair & a few piercings...which could describe any number of folks behind that table.) I was assured that FanPro was still working with LRG to keep the worlds connected.

The feeling I got was that the emphasis is no longer going to be bringing ED to SR, but that neither group was ruling out another connection or three.

Folks have mentioned the rumors of Obsidimen, but I wanted to point out that there have also been mentions of "fairies" that sound a lot like Windlings....
Synner
FanPro fully intends to pursue the ED link as it has done in the recent past (that is indirectly at best and nothing like the tail end of the FASA period), but with the development focus for the next couple of years I can definitely say that you won't be seeing anything similar to say Shadows of Asia and you definitely won't be seeing windlings appear as viable PC types.

good to know, I did like the crossover info...especially the little barbs that harley, D, and L make in the various books.

eh, I still feel that Orks and Trolls get a bit of the short end of the stick...a decently cybered human is about as strong and tough as an ork, after all. Right?

I dunno... if I'd been in charge of deciding what Earthdawn elements to bring into Shadowrun, given the choice between cyberpunk fairies and immortal elves, I'd be giving Tinkerbell a pink mohawk and hand razors so fast you'd think I had MBW4.

Now John, hindsight is 20/20. I can just see swarms of ganger pixies roving the streets armed with cigarette missile launchers. They run Dust along the cost from the Pixie Nation in the North to Seattle, where it's sold for a huge profit. The Mayor turns a blind eye because they blackmailed him with video of his carnivorous chomping on faire meat...

Well there is enough OTHER elements you could possibly bring over. Why hamstring yourself between IE and windlings? I was personally never a fan of fairies to begin with.
