Full Version: Question about the M79B1 LAW Rocket...
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
Shrapnel
In the Cannon Companion, pg. 29, it says:

QUOTE
The most common light anti-armor weapon (LAW) in the world, the M79B1 is a single shot, disposable rocket fired from a shoulder mount.

Yet, in the table at the bottom of the page, it shows a separate cost for the rocket itself.

So, do you have to buy the rocket separately, or is it included with the launcher? question.gif

I've always been under the impression, mainly due to Fields of Fire, the the nuyen.gif 700 price tag was for one complete rocket launcher. Am I now to believe that I must buy the launcher and the rocket separately, yet it is still only good for one shot?

The same question applies to the MAW. Fields of Fire also describes it as having a disposable firing canister, yet Cannon Companion lists a separate cost for the rocket.

At least they were clear on the Great Dragon having a reusable canister...

I'm so confused... frown.gif

*BTW, I did use the search function, and this was the only thread I could find that addressed the topic. Even then, the answers were vague.

Previous thread on this subject.

Maybe they're like disposable diapers; ya' know? Just rinse 'em out and use 'em again...

You dispose the launcher and reuse the rocket.

The separate cost for the rocket is merely so you can buy them to make IEDs.

You see, the Cannon Companion was written by Bizaros, the twisted and imperfect clones of superman who do everything backwards. This is why there are anti-tank rockets than cannot possibly scratch an armored vehicle and pistol bullets than can destroy tanks.
This also explains the firearms creation rules perfectly.

Their utterly unoriginal FCG.

That's certainly a curious way of saying "it was written by idiots."

And then you have the new version of LAWs that are FAE. They make a nice boom in enclosed spaces. biggrin.gif

The origonal price in the book is for a one shot/ one use fully working shoulder mounted rocket and its rocket ammo. The secondary price is basically for your second ... third.....fourth......and on the run shots. Basically the other prices are for using the tube more then once.
Raygun
Which is kind of silly, considering that militaries that issue this type of thing (M72 LAW, AT4, etc...) issue them as a round of ammunition. The launcher is disposable and cannot be reloaded. There is no separate cost for additional rockets in Fields Of Fire, where the M79B1 was introduced.

Anyway, that's how I treat them. The price of the launcher includes the rocket and the launcher cannot be reloaded.

I used to have a friend who worked at Fort Hood who gave us used AT4 tubes. Wish I still had mine. Kind of a neat conversation piece.
Findar
How does the warhead on the AT4 compare to the RPGs being used by insurgents in Iraq?
Austere Emancipator
It's a bit difficult to say exactly what warheads they're using down there. Assuming they're basic PG-7s, the AT-4 penetrates 20-50% more, is less likely to deflect, creates a metal projectile that does not deteriorate as fast (maintains good penetration up to several feet away from the point of detonation), and presumably causes more spalling and/or fragmentation through armor.

Remember that iron and metals in general are much more scarce in SR2060, and that the UCAS has taken recycling to a near religious heights.

Iron Rare?? you are kidding right? 35% of the earth's mass if from iron.

Yeah, and a lot of it happens to be liquid and floating around near the center. I'd still argue against it being rare, but that 35% figure is horribly misleading.

Rare can simply mean more expensive to mine than to recycle.
Austere Emancipator
Modern disposable rocket launchers have tubes made mostly out of fiberglass. I doubt the raw materials make up a large part of the construction costs now or in the future.
Kanada Ten
I'm not suggesting that they actually recycle them, just that Congress may have made it mandatory for the manufacturer to allow for such.
Austere Emancipator
They could do that just fine with disposable rocket launchers. In peace-time, they'd just send the fired tubes back to the manufacturer. The tubes would probably be manufactured such that the innermost layer (which might be slightly damaged by the launch) could be replaced and the tube reloaded.
ronin3338
If I remember right, in field use, soldiers are supposed to destroy the launcher once it's fired. It's meant for one shot. Think of it like a disposable camera... yeah, you can get film and reload it yourself, but that negates the whole point of making it disposable. Also, I think that the manufacturer would be the only one able to re-load it with the required degree of proficiency.

Remember, if you have to fire more than one rocket:
A) The run has gone horribly wrong
B) Use a rocket launcher, not a LAW or VLAW
Shrapnel
Thanks for all the help, guys!

It looks like the replacement rockets were added as an afterthought, so I'll just ignore them completely, and keep the LAW as a one-shot disposable launcher.

Perhaps you could return the used tubes for a core credit, or a deposit... grinbig.gif
Austere Emancipator
That'd be a brilliant career move for a shadowrunner.

The way we were taught to employ LAWs was to fire as many of them as we could at any target worth shooting at before it started shooting back. When doing the classic VIP convoy ambush, I don't think it's at all overdoing it to have at least 4 LAWs at the ready.

I'd say if you have time to reload a rocket launcher and still need to fire more rockets after that, then the run has gone horribly wrong.

seconded.

you could also buy them sepperately to load into reusable launch tubes (stuff mounted on vehicles or drones)
