I was just looking through the 1st edition Earthdawn BBB and came across this tidbit.

In addition to the slavers, Dis also inspires bureaucrats who create paperwork merely to look busy, rather than out of a need for the records or fondness for their work. Few activities spread boredom more effectively than generating useless records and information, and Dis spends a great deal of her time encouraging people to do just that. |
I don't believe that there can possibly be a better testamentto the fact that the Passions still wield great power even now.

Dis has been sleeping peacefully in the depths of government wrapped in red tape....

Dis grows stronger every day... Vestrival and Raggok too, that's quite sure. The queston is: what's with the other passions?
Ophis

The passions are dead!
Long live the passions. I went for humans being insane. Dis is dead as man rise something like Dis will arise. Though vestrial was last seen giving harle a job...

Ah, but is Dis an individual entity with a clearly delineated birth and death, or the manifestation of an abstract concept? If it's the latter, I have no question that Dis will reappear, albeit with a different face and name.

[ Spoiler ]
In my opinion, Deus=Dis, and Mirage=Mynbruje. Check out the parallels yourself. In my game there is another AI which evolved in the servers of a space opera Matrix Game called Loophole (released in the 2050s by a corp called Horizon Inc). This AI, which has been discretely working against Deus since the shutdown ended, hasn't exactly let its name be known yet (its 2063) but in the game 'Loophole' there is an alien deity which the game designers jokingly named after the game server- 'Localhost', or Lochost for short.

Why is it that every time I open my mouth on this board there's a big fat silence! Maybe I should propose using a Force 16 Air Spirit to fracture every enemy's gun barrel! Maybe
that'd provoke some discussion!

Maybe the spirits of tumbleweeds love you?
Interesting idea on the AIs though.

System Failure sort of introduces matrix "idols", who seem different from AI, but having AI match Passions is an interesting idea.

If someone introduces horrors and passions in the matrix ... I am going to
do this, so just walk away.

Wasn't there a spirit with questionable motives named "Tutor" or something in Threats or Threats 2?

If I've got my ED lore right, he's one of the Passions, which are the ED equivalent of totems, and which are still followed by some guys in Tir Tairngire. In ED there weren't any shamans of the Passions like it is in SR, rather, anyone could be a questor of a Passion and get certain powers for doing so. Dis was one of them.

Dis is a passion who sacrificed his santy to save many mortals

QUOTE (Earthdawn Players Compendium @ page 463) |
Dis (Mad Passion) Known as Erendis before the Scourge, this Passion once stood for the ideals of Order, Bureaucracy and Work. Now, even with her warped ideals, Dis is a popular Passion among those who make their living from the Theran slave trade. Unlike the other Passions, Dis takes her greatest pleasure in destroying people’s passion for life, rather than inspiring it. She bleeds away her worshippers’ zest for living and they in turn demoralize those they subjugate. Eventually, the slaves and bureaucrats influenced by this Mad Passion become empty husks, devoid of dreams and feelings. Dis wants to extend this death of the soul throughout the world.
In addition to the slavers, Dis also inspires bureaucrats who create paperwork merely to look busy, rather than out of a need for the records or fondness for their work. Few activities spread boredom more effectively than generating useless records and information, and Dis spends a great deal of her time encouraging people to do just that.
Ideals: Confusion, Unnecessary Work, Complex Bureaucratic Hierarchies, Slavery and Mastery
Typical Appearance: Dis manifests as a thin, sickly male or female of any race, who seems to have been deprived of sunlight and exercise for far too long.
Common Elements: Papers, papers and more papers, contracts, tomes of ritual, slaves, chains
Powers: Dis can remove fervor from those around her and cause confusion in their minds, make people obey her will, and teleport instantaneously to any place she has visited before. |
