Full Version: Shadowspeak?

I've got some old "dictionaries" of streetspeak, but I'd like to know some of your best lingo for 2070. Street slang, business names, products of the future, etc.

I'd like to put together a newer listing for inspiration and laughs. If there's enough input and a desire, I'd be happy to make it a PDF and post it.

Very Eloquent.
Funny though.

Mostly ment to be educational about the current state of shadowspeak. It is used 6 times in the Buzzkill story, counting "Fuck, fuck, fuck!" as a single use, and then in two seperate chapter introductions. This compared to only two uses of "frag" variants, neither of which are used IC, buried together in the Attribute description section.

Based on this it seems to me that "frag" has become the lingo of academics, and that with real runners "fuck" is back in vogue. This means I now have an even more arguable reason for not saying "frag", which uttering makes me feel like a hypocritical prat for swearing but in a top sekrit coded way. ohplease.gif

P.S. A drek variant gets used 3 times, once IC in a chapter introduction. So it still has some street cred.

There's already The Word on the Streets but it's supposedly CP2020 based, but I think a lot of it ports over decent enough.

Not what I was f***ing looking for, you f***. wink.gif But yes, funny.

I was hoping not for a discussion on action porn, but of things Shadowrun that players and GMs have dropped in their IC for flavor.

For example, a book I recently read set in 2059 has police narcotics renamed "illegals" to reflect the addition of simsense. Drugs are referred to as chems or chemicals. They go get tubes of Pepsi after leaving the crime scene. The word phone is replaced universally with link.

Sure, some of that might seem obvious, but some of us actually have to make a conscious effort to see the world that way. Also, my happy white-bread self could use a pointer to ganger-speak, even the f***ing crap they use now in place of actual english.

Slang for those things essentially meta, both complimentary and not, would also be fun.

I'll try to compile a list of newer stuff from my games in a bit

I always thought that the lingo would be a mash of words from all over the globe, kind of like the lingo used in clockwork orange. Especially the word viddy - to view or look at.

jus thave to add my favorite sentence in all of literature (updated of course)
the fraggin fraggers fragged for frag sake.

It is a common noun, a proper noun, a pronoun, an adjective, a verb, an adverb, an exclamation, an expletive, an epithet, a title, and a preposition.
With so many potential uses it is truely the miracle word.

The term narcotics in police work is already outdated. Narcotics refers to pain relievers and only pain relievers which are only a fraction of all illegal drugs and of which many are perfectly legal.

It is pretty well impossible to determine the evolution of slang since it is bound to pop culture and evolves just as quickly. Some words are eternal but most fall by the wayside as new ones take their place.

I remember which everything good was "cool" then it was "bad" and then it was "phat" and I don't even know what it is now.

Especially Matrix 2.0 needs new slang words. Not just for flair, but for an easier conversation.

"I hack into the camera node, using the hacking one the fly method, to gain security access".

vs

"I <insert slang word here> the camera".
hyzmarca
I fuuzared the camera.

Fuuzar this; Fuuzaar that; Fuuzar Nebis with a baseball bat.

Allo.

Just getting into the game. Wondering if anything new came along on this idea.

Thanks.

I use "fast and hard" as opposed to "slow and romantic." That's just me, though.

Hmmm. for Narcs, it seems that the primariy illicit "drugs" are BTLs, so perhaps something to do with unplugging your BTL ... derezzers, [party] crashers, etc.

I kind of favor Party Crashers because it's not tied to a specific drug or even type of "party".

Here is one i found a while back.

I'm a fan of going the Firefly route and using foreign language oaths--keeps the game gritty without making it crude. Of course, simple mispronounciations (e.g., "Gorram") can add some atmosphere, too.

"Drek," "hoop," and "fragger" never really go out of style, though.

Some of us are also playing in the general presence of our kids, and we'd prefer to use the older slang.

Plus, I'm of the opinion that if you can only use one word, and use it for everything, it shows a lack of creativity.

"Fsck you you fscking fsck" isn't bad. But "I hope your testicles shrivel up and fall off so you can't propogate your useless genetics" just works so much better for me.

How about Klingon? (sorry couldn't resist)

Of course, being a Dwarfer (a person who has watched the Brit sci-fi series Red Dwarf), I frequently use the word "Smeg" in place of most swear words.

A little tangental but try this link for a huge database of slang.

Hmm did you know Drek origins come from Yiddish meaning "shit/bullshit" or so they say.

Me I like to use Feth a lot. A little gak too. (Gaunts Ghost of course)

I do hope you realise that smeg is an actual word.

On the subject of fuck, I see no reason why others should tell me I can't talk the way I was brought up. A word itself isn't good or bad. It is intent that matters. "I fucked her" sounds aggressive and not so nice. "I fucking love her" sounds quite passionate and sincere.

Besides, it's just a class thing. Fuck was a perfectly acceptable part of the English language once. It was only when the Normans invaded England and all the nobility and wannabes started using the language of the conquerors (Old French) to suck up to them that a lot of the old Anglo-Saxon became considered vulgar. Vulgar itself being a word that means "common."

If you really want to show your patriotism and defiance to the invaders, then you should be very proud to use the word fuck.
BookWyrm
The word is "Smeg", NOT "smegma", and has a variety of definitions. I go for the 'nonsense word' one.
cx2
Firstly, the term "smeg" was apparently derived for the series intentionally from "smegma" meaning bad smell.

Secondly, he also asked for product names of the future and noone mentioned nerps? nyahnyah.gif

Something that the show creators have denied doing.

Odd since I had a book that explicitly said that was exactly where it was from.
