I've got some new players that I wanna have some fun with... My favorite timeline and backstory is Bug City.

Do you think it would be ethical to use the SR4 rules to play in this time period?

Please discuss... nyahnyah.gif
Dashifen
Sure. Have a good time.
Butterblume
What's there to discuss? Go for it.
If they are new players, you won't even have to try to reconcile differences wink.gif.
James McMurray
there isn't a question of ethics in choosing a game system, just of what will be fun. smile.gif

I'm using SR4 rules to run Brainscan right now, it's working fine though I have to make some adjustments periodically. If you're using older published material it makes a bit of extra work for you as GM to do conversions.

I loved Brainscan. That campaign rocked. Of course, Deus has been my favourite villain and the Arcology has been my favourite setting, so I'm partial.

I'm actually looking at running Survival of the Fittest under SR4. I'm even thinking of moving it to 2070, since it doesn't need to happen at any particular time, just sometime after Ghostwalker arrives.

I'm using Brainscan, a modified version of the Renraku Adventure in First Run, and several events from System Failure in an altered timeline to do a SR3 to SR4 bridge campaign. So far my players are really enjoying it.

That sounds fun, I might try that later too. I have a lot of old adventures that no one has run in our group yet, I may convert though I'll have to change some dates to make them fit.
Nasrudith
Possible, but it would require some edits to the rules, such as turning commlinks into cyberdecks, wiring the matrix, etc.
stevebugge
Yeah coverting from 1st ed to 4th ed is a fair amount of work
NightHaunter
I'm gonna SR4 Survival of the fittest.
And crunch my timeline to fit it in.
Go bug city!

I’m curious. What are those that are using SR4 inSR3 time line doing about the matrix.

I see 2 options.

In 2059 the matrix is wireless, COM links are normal. AR is everywear.

AR doesn’t exist, were using the SR4 VR rules, your com link is the size of a small suitcase and you need to plug it into a wall.

That was going to be my biggest thing..

However.. I will use the timeline in Chicago to make that alot easier on myself. Players go in with decks and matrixware, and when they come out.. this new tech arrives..

One thing that I am going to do is adjust the timeline a bit by making Dues stretching his tendrils out in 2055. or what are the beginnings of Dues. I've come up with an adventure that has the characters breaking into the truman towers to get access to an experimental chip, and slot it to a satalite upload link... Directly to Dues. (Characters first run in)

After they get out of chicago a few years later, AR will be in it's infancy, but matrix will be primary till the crash.

This will leave open my reason for getting them into the Archology.. Man, My players are going to hate me.. biggrin.gif

I'm just setting Survival of the Fittest post 2070!
Simple.

For the actual pre-2070 parts of my campaign I'm using Commlink Stats and SR 4 hacking rules, no AR, SR4 Drone/vehicle rules, and yes the commlinks are the size of briefcases and do need to be plugged in. For future converted adventures I'm probably going to bend the timeline so they happen later, probably change a few names and other details.

I'm doing this too- using SR4 for a game that starts in 2063 (and will hopefully jump through a few episodes to 2070ish).
Yes Matrix is the biggest difference- cyberdecks are handled as using commlink stats and rules and you've got to jack in; the only wireless links worth hacking are to drones. *Shrug*. Other than that the SR4 rules seem to work just fine. Oh and some of the tech hasn't surfaced yet. But my players happen to be working for an AI with advanced tech anyway, so even that isn't really an issue.

You know that the Matrix SB featured radio/cellular upgrades for cyberdecks (fully simsense compliant)?
The biggest difference of SR3 and SR4 is AR, not the ways you could access VR.

I've been toying with going back to Shadows of the Underworld and going from there...
