Krait - Prepairing to meet Ms. Johnson
PAN Icon offline, Custom hidden, Moai passive
The greenbearded elf gave the new arrival a look like guys on the prowl do, extending his shoulders and sitting more broadlegged, as he leaned back and took a long drag from his beer. His eyes where trained unwaveringly on her´s with a confident look, while he repeated a mantra in his mind, to keep him self from checking his agent more often then every few seconds. ... She has no Hacker! I´m her technical support. She has no Hacker! I´m her technical support. She has no Hacker! I´m her technical support... It made him only feel slightly less uneasy about his network, because that she didn´t bring one, didn´t mean there where NO hackers around.
His piercing gaze served a three-fold purpose. 1st for any observers, to keep up his show of a man out for a date, no matter if the one he´d waited for turned up or not - and this one looked much more anticing then the waitress he had just flirted with in any case. 2nd, to make her look away - he didn´t want it to look like she had come here to meet him. If she managed to pass by -all the better- he´d aproache her later, making it look like they just met coincidentaly and didn´t know each other.
Finally it would it would give him a good look at her and allow him to judge her by her reaction. Would she look away to play along - would she not get it, or not care and keep aproaching him directly - would she try to hold the gaze but fail? From the notion that she couldn´t affort to pay much, he assumed that Ms. Johnson was new to the Shadows, or at least to the side that he had been used to in his previous life.

Carla stopped momentarily in her tracks when the elf looked directly at her. Reflexively, she looked away, as if she had been caught staring at him (well, she HAD been caught staring at him.)
Why was he looking at her? Did he recognize her? Had Mr. Chu given him a photo of her? Or perhaps he just didn't like people staring at him?
It occurred to Carla that she had no idea how to initiate this meeting. She thought back to all those espionage and detective stories, where the characters would offer a cigarette light or some other secret signal. But Carla hadn't arranged for any such signals. Her only option really was to mention something directly related to the case; if he wasn't the right guy, he'd be clueless and she'd simply walk away. And if he was the right guy...
Well, she couldn’t turn back now; he had already seen her. However, when she set her sights back on the elf, he seemed to be gesturing to an empty booth with his eyes. What was going on here? Did he know something that she didn’t? Whatever the case, he seemed to be in control of the situation, which Carla did exactly like, but at least someone had an idea of how this was supposed to go down.
Willing the oblige, she turned her head away once more and veered over to the indicated booth, trying to look as though she had been heading that way all along. She folded her coat across her lap as she sat down and drew out her commlink, pretending to be busy reading the menu.

After a few moments, a waitress showed up at Carla's table - which struck the young woman as odd since she had guessed orders in a place like this were mostly made in AR. Maybe she had taken too long and they were worried she wasn't planning on buying anything...
But instead of asking her what she wanted, the middle-aged woman shrugged at her apologetically, and said in a low voice, "Sorry to bother ya, but the creep over there wants to buy you something - anything you want. What the hell, ya know, it's free eats. Me, I'd string him along, but if ya want me to get rid of him, I'll make sure he leaves you alone."

He took a last long draft from his beer and with a faked insecure smile aproached the lady he asumed to be his employer to be.
As he reached the booth, he delivered his well rehersed, cheap punchline.
Krait: "Hey, you look like an M.J.! I´m a friend of Charly´s, may I?"
Without stoping in his aproach for even one second, to wait for a reply, he slided into the boot.

Virtually unstoppable, the machingun-mouth went on talking without pause, even as he cought his breath. His eyes -one of which looked pink as if infected- scanned her carefully, only momentarily flickering to one side or the other to get a look at the surrounding.
Krait: "Oh, I know, I may not entirely seem like what you are looking for," (Quiet the oposit propably) "but everything looks better in the right light. Do you mind?"
With that the elf with the black tie and the pink eye lighted the cigarrette he had just fished out of his pocket, and in deed in the flames orange-blue shine, the tie shimmered pinkish-red and his irises, theat had apeared to be dark brown, turned out to be solid black.
He leaned backwards, placing his extended arm on the backrest, to put as much space between the lit cigarrette and her, as possible and carefully blew the smoke down to the side, as to not anoy her.

Krait: "Oh, met her in that chat, 'Jungle Room' on 'ApeScape' -you probably don´t know- anyway, she probably didn´t come because she didn´t like this place..."
When he turned his gaze back to the human woman in his booth, his facial expression went sober just for an instant as he replyed to her question.
Krait: "A friend recomanded this place to me, said it was good to meet interesting people. My friend Charly, asian businessman, serious, hard working, trustworthy, ..."
The smirk came back.
Krait: "charming, funny, good looking guy."

Carla rubbed her forehead and let out a sigh of frustration . She had intentionally been honest with him so that there would be no room for negotiation. She simply didn't have any more to offer.
She could, of course, double his pay by sacrificing her share of the prize. But then why the hell was she wasting her time with this search-and-rescue? She needed to make money - quickly! There was no telling when the next shedim attack would occur.
Perhaps she would have to sacrifice the profit on just this first run; if she proved her competence once, then Miguel might set her up for some bigger bounties in the future. And besides, she did want to make sure Esmeralda was alive.
She had already spent too much time and money trying to get some help on this job; if she turned this guy away, there was no telling how long it would take to get another contact from Chu.
"First of all, I can't promise that everything in this job will be legal, as I have no idea what it will take to get our poor friend back."
"As for money...I am not going to play favorites amongst my hires; I don't want to deal with any drama if someone suddenly finds out that he's taking a smaller share of the prize than you. So here's the deal: the prize money is to be split between you and your teammates as you all see fit. I don’t plan on hiring more than three heads, so that should give you at least a third of the money. If you think you deserve a bigger share, you’ll have to work that out with the others, not me.”
“On top of the prize money, I can get you free services from a reliable doctor, should you need them. I cannot, however, provide coverage for expensive parts like organs and cyberware; you’ll have to pay for that yourself.”

After leaving Penumbra, Conall had literally gone around the block a few times... trying to get a good feel for the bike. The rush of the air around him, the defeating sound of the powerful racing engine. It was a new thrill. It hadn't taken more than a few minutes for him to feel totally confident, if not overconfident, about his abilities to push the vehicle further into the heart of Seattle. Speeding down an alley here, weaving between traffic at the next stop. For a moment, Conall forgot about his own exile. He forgot about everything. Well... almost everything. Etain was still in his mind. As he stood idling at a red light, looking at some elven model in a storefront... he just couldn't help but think of her. In a way, she was lucky. Kicking the leg-stand down, Conall gave a slightly worried look from behind the downed visor of his brand new helmet. The large parking lot of the dinner was mostly filled with haulers and semi of all shapes and colors. But that wasn't really what worried him: it was the ork taking a piss agaisnt a brick wall not 5 meters away from him... and the two trolls talking loudly as the walked out of the dinner.
What sort of trog infested den is this shite hole?
If he didn't have his helmet on, Conall would have spat his disgust on the pavement. Pulling the helmet of his head, the young elf ran a quick hand through his slightly sweat covered hair, making them stand right up like a buzz cut. In what could best be described as a hurried huddle, the young shaman made his way to the front door, trying not to throw up at all the sights.
Conall actually felt glad he had come to the meeting on an empty stomach. The inside of the place was filthier than the inside. It was even filthier than the room he was renting. The wolf shaman had one of those slight hiccup where one actually throws up in their mouths and swallows it back. That was how much he didn't like the place. It was down right repugnant... and on top of it all, filled with the scums and degenerate of humanity. Dwarves. Trolls. Orks. And their rotten smell. His helmet in one hand, Conall used his other to literally shield his nose and mouth for the filth for a few seconds.
Bumping shoulders with something he didn't care for and didn't even looked at, or even mumbled and excuse for, Conall made his way to the counter area. Pulling the sleeve of his jacket over his hand, he wiped the seat off as best as he could before sitting... which he did by touching the stool as little as he could. As he pulled his commlink out to order, spam started to assault his senses left and right. The things filters weren't on... and he had yet to upgrade it from the cheap knockoff he had gotten a hold of. Turning it off and dropping it back in his pocket, Conall simply resorted to flagging down something that looked like it worked in the place.
“Tea.” he simply said, in a tone of someone used to being served.
“We only got coffee honey.”
Conall shivered as what looked like a woman refered to him as “honey”.
“Coffee then.” and he literally waved her off, as if shooing a fly.

Carla stood and started heading back to the table. She stopped after a step, though, and she looked back at him to ask him not to mention anything about her profession. However, as she faced him, the elf's appearance of utter dejection was impossible to ignore. She didn't want to carry on a business conversation if this guy was going to be grumpy all night.
"Hey, what's got you so down?"

He shoved his free hand into his jacket's pocket.
"Me worries are me own, and don't feel no shame in asking of them. Lets get the figuring figured so we can beat this hole."

Krait - Meeting Ms. Johnson

Slightly anoyed that she wouldn´t wait for his reply, John cought himself fumbling another cigarrette out of his pocket.
He watched his Jhonson walk over to the other elf, that had just entered the diner and, putting back the smoke and lighter, gave him a through look, as they aproached.
Intimidation was not usually the week spot of guys hauling around this kind of body and the new-commer didn´t look like he apreciated smoothtalking much, so when the irish man addressed him, the green-bearded elf simply gave him a casual, but respectfull nod and turned his eyes -if not his full attention- to Ms. Johnson again, picking up the conversation right where they left it.
Krait: "Free medical services would be just fine - I didn´t expect you to cover for lost limbs. You don´t need to raise the pay, either, one quarter minimum seems fair enough. If unforseen legal problems arise, we´d have to talk about it again -naturally- but you might be surprised, what can be done legaly or quasi-legal, if done the right way," Don´t talk that much like a lawyer! "and the help of a decent Law Know-Soft!"
He had said that as much to make the point that he wouldn´t give her cart banche to force him into any illegal actions, as for the posibility, that someone was recording their conversation (as he did), to later use it against him. For a moment he fealt himself falling into his old rationalizing mindset again and for a splitsecond even belived to see the multi-facetted patern of an insect-eye shining through Ms. Johnson´s iris. He shook off the creepy feeling and kept his skin from ripling in goose-bumbs, speaking on, with but a slight dramatic pause.
Krait: "As for the favour - don´t think about it as a dept. Just consider any request I might have in the future favourably, as I considered your´s. You don´t have to feel obligued to anything!"

Carla let out a small smile, pleased with the elf's proposition.
"That sounds reasonable enough. I certainly wouldn't mind paying you back with future favors - I just want to be clear that I do not have very much to offer."
Carla glanced at the two elves surrounding her; they seemed to be the very antithesis of each other. In front of her sat a neon-haired, cyber-eyed, self-proclaimed person-expert who seemed a bit lacking in class, but at least he seemed to be flexible and cooperative. She wasn't sure exactly how experienced he was, but she was fairly certain that she wasn't paying him quite as much as he deserved. It was commendable that he was willing to help in spite of that fact.
On the other hand, beside her sat a clean, reserved, tastefully-dressed young man with a sourpuss on his face and a vulgar tongue. Carla had no problem with people being glum or keeping quiet - after all, she wasn't all flowers and sunshine herself. But what she did need to be clear about was that this new guy genuinely wanted this job and would be willing to cooperate.
"Perhaps we should introduce ourselves. You may call me Miss Johnson," Carla said, remembering the name used by Black Cat. She waited for one of the two elves to chime in next.

"Well, it's very nice to meet both of you," she spoke towards both elves. "Allow me to recap the situation: A nun disappeared from a nearby church about one month ago, and there is a 25,000 nuyen reward for anyone who can bring her back alive. The prize is 15,000 nuyen if she is returned dead. I have already done some investigating myself, but I need help to progress any further - that's why you gentlemen are here. I don't currently have plans to hire anybody else, but I am leaving open the possibility that we may need at least one more pair of hands in the future. That makes four of us max, and to avoid any controversy, I believe we are all entitled to a quarter of the final prize."
"Naturally, a quarter of 25,000 isn't very much money, especially if this problem takes multiple weeks to solve, so I promised Frank here that on top of the payment, I can get him the services of a reliable doctor free of charge. He will also remain in my good graces after the job is done, though I was warning him that my good graces do not have very much to offer."
She turned her attention to Paddy. "You are entitled the the same benefits, of course, should you want them."

Carla tapped her chin with her finger, contemplating Paddy's offer. This was certainly an interesting proposition; if she could provide the elf with room and board rather than cash, then that meant there would be more money for both Krait and herself. The question was, could she provide him with room and board? Even if she found him a place to stay, she would still need to pay for food - and judging from his attitude, Carla doubted he would settle for the cheap stuff. Nevertheless, a couple of weeks worth of groceries certainly would amount to less than a quarter or third of the Miguel's reward.
"That is a very interesting offer," she started, "And I'm certainly willing to consider it; I will see if I can find anything available for you, and if not, we will have to settle for cash."
She took another sip of water.
"So is everyone clear about compensation?"

The bald guy noded to his new employer and placed the credstick from his comlink infront of her. With a relaxed but respectfull tone, he explained.

Any information you allready hold and any starting-points might turn out usefull - you can store everything along with your comcode or means of contact on the stick."
When he turned to 'Paddy', his expression became more cheary, but just a bit and no less respectfull. He offered his hand for a shake and said.
Krait: "Good to have you on board, Paddy! And sorry mate, didn´t meen to cut you out of the conversation, just answer the question Ms Johnson left me with sitting here, so the three of us could move on.
Now since we are going to work together, it seems like a good idea to me, to know each other´s strong points - but maybe we should find some more private and comfortable place first."
He turned his face back to Ms Johnson.
Krait: "This includes your strong points, in case you are planing to work with us closle, instead of strictly supervising - however you prefere."
For a moment the thought that none of these two where actually the people he was meant to meet almost 20 minutes later, sprang up in his mind, but he pushed it into the back of his head - he´d check it later on.

"I don't want to get into too many details right now, but I can explain a very specific first task that needs to be taken care of - this is especially concerning you, Frank. I have a set of names and corresponding commcodes for individuals connected to our missing person, and I have a strong suspicion that at least one of these individuals is responsible for her disappearance. Naturally, if these are dangerous people, I do not want to simply call them up and ask them who they are: I need to find out who these people are without them knowing about it, and all I have to work with is a name and commcode."
"Now, I don't know much about hacking, but I imagine that there is some way you can access a commlink without leaving any traces of your intrusion. Does that sound like it might be within your abilities, Frank?"

“Chimes all fernuff to me. I got no bother with whatever ye decide lady”
The young elf turned around in his seat, trying to throw a look out the dinner's window and into the parking lot. The neighborhood wasn't half as bad as the one where he was staying, a few blocks away... but he was starting to grow a little nervous about leaving his brand new bike outside in the rain. Seeing the dark gray night clouds in the sky, Conall couldn't help but think of the grand rainy days they'd be getting back home. The first few words coming out of Frank's mouth didn't reach him. He distantly heard his new name being called, but he actually had to think about it to realized he “was” Paddy.
As Frank apologized, Conall simply waved his hand in the air, gesturing him to forget about it. He then started to slowly drum his fingers, once in a while, on the table's edge, and threw in a yawn here and there. He finally reached over for the small napkin dispenser next to where he was, grabbed one and took out a pen from inside his jacket, and wrote something down. As Frank and Miss Johnson kept their conversation going, Conall took care in folding the little thing a few times over itself and simply slid it to Carla.
It was voicemail number. His voicemail number.

It seemed like Chu hadn´t told Johnson that much about him - or else she knew less about hacking then the next person. Either way suited him fine, he just hoped his contact-data was save on her com at least to some degree. He re-initiated his Moai´s wifi conection with the previous IP, to not make anybody suspicious.
Krait: "This touches our discussion about legality, of course, but I´ll see what I can do, once you give me the file - put the location and time for the hand-off on the credstick, please. Untill then, anything you can provide from the top of your head -especially the name of the person- will get me starting."
