Ok, as a lark I was going through some of the images on Elfwood, seeing what artists came up with for Shadowrun.
I came across a nicely done piece - until I read the description.
Half elf, half dwarf.
Uh - WTF? Dude, read the rules for the game!
I don't know how many GMs would actually allow that sort of thing, but I sure wouldn't, nor would I want to play in a game where the GM did!
Minor rant over.

Give me a few minutes, see if I can find the image again. Elfwood is a pretty massive site.

Heh, didn't take as long as I figured it would....
http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/art/o/n/onib.../eliza.jpg.htmlThe artist isn't bad, I've seen worse, but still, it bugs the crap out of me. Half elf, half dwarf. *shudders*

Well, let's break it down and see what sort of munchkinner, broken, character this "best of both worlds" ended up being.
Elf: Taller than human norm, more slender, sparser body hair. Pointed ears. Traditionally, quicker than humans, more likeable, a little less healthy.
Dwarf: Shorter than human norm, blocky, hairier. Pointed ears. Traditionally, slower than humans, less likeable, and more healthy.
OMG SO COOL Half Elf/ Half Dwarf LOL: Human. Pointed ears.
Yeah. Sounds like someone just took the "elf poseur" disadvantage, and got a little cosmetic surgery, to me. Then, y'know, drew a picture.

I think if I had to merge them I'd choose to end up with 'tall and slender, pointy ears, very hairy and warty, knobbly knees, red nose'...
God, why am I even thinking about this? Visions of an ex-girlfriend, perhaps.

That's cause they arn't 'traditional' races, but a mutation of the standard human. Before you guys start to bbq me, I'm not using mutation as a deragatory term, just a scientific term.

You have 9 more tries.
Though I do admit to liking the game system when in a group of people who know the rules and dont have to spend the night book diving.

Here is how I would GM a half elf half dwarf.
8 ) So you want to play a half elf half dwarf, right?
: P Yup.
8 ) You are aware that the rules for interracial breeding are pretty well laid out, and basically say that mixed parentage means you turn out as one or the other.
: P Yeah but there was a (Blaggety blag blag blag) and so I get to have low light and thermographic vision, high mental and physical stat caps, and still turn out looking roughly human.
8 ) No.
: p But blaggety blag blag
8 ) .... No.
: P I'll buy you pizza
8 ) Pepperoni and pineapple?
: P yup.
8 ) Ok. Sesion one, there is a knock at the door.
: P who is it?
8 ) Aztechnology, they want to use you for some genetic experiments. You spend the next three years on an operating table having your internal organs detailed.

My favourite GM munchin blasting story was for a character that was a Drow Bladesinger (Apparently a different species only character class)
The guy basically went through every D&D book stacking bonuses until they were a deity with the longsword.
The GM then dumped the party in the stone age. All the balanced characters just picked up a stick, and the more inventive ones tied rocks to theirs. Captain munchkin only had longsword skills, and spent the next few game months trying to build a longsword.
"How hard can it be?"
"In the bronze age without the mining or weaponsmithing skills? Pretty hard, would be my guess."

Holy shit, really?! Ever since 1992, I've been playing Shadowrun all wrong! Jesus, that's pie on my face, for sure. Holy fuck. I am so embarrassed right now. Man. All this time, I've been...oh, wow. Wow. This is nuts. Thank you, emo samurai, for telling me the stat mods in Shadowrun. Here, since first edition, I'd been all wrong. All along, here I've been playing Shadowrun where elves and dwarves get...oh...no, wait.
Maybe I did say "traditionally," up there, in that post of mine. Huh. Yup. Looks like I did, after all. Whew, that was a close one. For a minute there, I was all embarrassed.

Here is how I would justify that character description.
Parent # 1 is an elf noble; because all sterotypical elves are nobles.
Parent #2 is a dwarf rigger; because all sterotypical dwarfs are good with machines.
Character is actually an Elf but was raised to apreciate vehciles thanks to parent #2 yet still has spowerful political connections in the Tirs thanks to parent #1.

Of course, IIRC, you could get half-elves and half-orcs in Earthdawn (supposed to be an earlier period in the history of Shadowrun Earth) couldn't you? In which case it's a bit of a mystery why you don't get such half-breeds in SR.
EDIT: I retract this. I think I'm misremembering.

i'd add that the character should not be able to digest vehicles, as a way of showing the kind of wacky biological effects you could get from mixing metatypes.

...actually had someone run a (Human) detective in a campaign I was in. No Mods, no heightened anything, just guts & wits. Did a pretty damn good job I must say. Definitely was the guy to go to during the legwork phase.
the Reporter/Snoop (Shadowbeat) isn't half bad either when you have to dig for info & clues while the other team members are too busy intiating, polishing their guns, or playing Miracle Shooter on the Matrix.

The investigator in 3rd Edition was pretty good for a semi-face type who wasn't completely useless in combat. A few sloppy things (like giving an electronics toolkit to someone lacking the electronics B/R skill), but still passable.
The weapons specialist in 4th Edtion, as the obligatory uncybered mundane character, is a joke, though. Mediocre Attributes, including Edge, and skills that are spread waaay too thin. Good at fixing weapons, maybe, but a long ways from being effective at using them, even compared to more tweaked
mundane builds, much less sammies.
Don't even get me
started on those pictures. When I look at softcore porn loosely based on Shadowrun, then I expect it to conform to all of the rulebooks, erratta, and fiction. I was looking the other day, and they had a picture of Nadja Daviar with rosy pink nipples.
THEY'RE DARK BROWN, DAMMIT!! DARK... BROWN!!!
