Full Version: Should I take a specialization in Computer or not.

My decker has Computer 6 and I have 8 karma to burn. since rising computer to 7 costs 11 karma, but if I specialize in Decking it costs 4 karma to rise it. And since there are really only 2 specialization that I'm interested in, programming and decking. I'm happy with Search operations 6 and only real use of cybernetics is only when installing ICCM biofeedback filter.

So it will be much cheeper to take programming and decking instead of whole skill, but how do you rest do it?

BTW is there any good specializations from Computer B/R, like installations, that is the only thing I'm using it for.

You've have more or less answered your own question: if you want to stretch your karma futher buy up specializations, if there is a good character reason to buy up the active skill you can if you want to.
There are only a couple of tests that go of your opponents computer skill as a TN in decking so that would be the only reason to raise it for purely munkin reasons.

As to B/R skills confer with your ref, if he/she finds it reasonable its a valid specialization.

As to my actions most of my decker have a intelligence of 6 not 7 as I go for gritty low nuyen games, so specializtion was the only way to go.

Yeah, figured that I had done that, but there is also one positive aspect with specializations that I didn't bring up, it takes less time to get a rise of a skill, but if I'm using a teacher its much more expensive.

You kinda have to pay attention to the GM; you learn which skills can be specialised by how often he makes your roll solely on the specialised use.

From a min-maxxing point of view, if you're only using 1 subskill of a skill, it's best to start specializing in it when your main skill is equal to half your racial max in the attribute, rounded up. Costs become too much (for my tastes) when you advance past your controlling attribute. So, if your max is 9, I'd start specializing at a base skill of 5.
