Full Version: NPC handles
Dumpshock Forums > Discussion > Shadowrun
Bashfull
I tried this on another thread but maybe it deserves it's own dedicated one.

Trying to think of good NPC handles isn't always easy. To create a useful resource, please submit the best 5 handles you've encountered (even if you made them up yourself). Then we can all have good names for our supporting cast. If you like, you can give a brief description, but it's the cool names I'm after.

I'll submit:

Catalyst: a fixer who gets things together.
Cinnamon: gillette.

Shockwave_IIc
Chessy as hell but..
Justin Case - Bodyguard
Ryan O'Brian - Cyclops
Tinman
Bounce- Rigger

Boy did that handle make the PC's nervous when they hired him as a wheel-man. devil.gif

I'll think of some more after work.

Well, speaking of cliche names but ones that I just can't get away from, there was a rigger and gunner team of NPCs in a campaign I ran called crash and burn. Through some rather silly actions on the part of the PCs, their helicopter actually did eventually crash.
Kyoto Kid
...Chief Headless Chicken [Bounty hunter Jill's Tribal Chieftan Contact]
...Sam I Am ["universal" fixer for most of my PCs]

...Smeg
...Nasty
...Reg
...Scrump

[Members of an oppos runner team named the "Pre Fab Four" (UK)]

..."Mr Heath" [Johnson (UK)]

The ones I had that really worked were more for the personality I think then the names but now everytime I or my players say that name we think of good times. Anyways mine go:

Wired Wolf - a wannabe Adept street sam that eventually became a mentor for some of my more tactically challenged PCs.

Bricktop - origonally a sterotypical dwarf rigger who ended up being considered a member of the team. Name comes from the fact that he always make sure all sides (including the top) of his vehicles are well armored.

Rockin Petey - a street sam with gyromount cyberarms that loved to shoot things up. The players came to love him as he was just all about a good time and was a nice contrast.

Slice 'n Dice - an extremely talented decker with a jack the ripper fetish and a tendancy to kill people. He started as an object lesson that while any given runner may be great to work with they may not be great people or even people you want to admit to knowing. What really got the PCs to like him is I styled his real life personality after a friend of ours named Bob who we call Silent Bob because the dude doesn't talk and I styled his Matrix persona on a buddy we call "The Mouth" because he's always talking and incredibly out going. Favorite quote from one of the PCs that knew Slice to one that didn't was "If you make him talk anymore he's going to spend the next three days cutting you into small bite size pieces"

My most recent Johnson I have introduced into a game is a 'Mr. Johnson' wearing horn rimmed glasses..... biggrin.gif
hyzmarca
There are five things that, if done by a Johnson, indicate that you should calmly shoot him in the face until he is dead and leave.

They are:
Introduces himself as "Mr. Johnson."
Uses the word "dragon" in a sentence.
Requests that you sign a physical contract rather than relying on a digital signature. (This goes double if his only pen uses human blood instead of ink.)
Tells you that, no matter what happens, you must not open the case.
Wears Horn-Rimmed Glasses.

Paladin - A well-educated pistol adept with a heavily customized six shooter who, ironically, is completely amoral and would shoot a baby in a stroller if the price was right.

Fat Samurai - A gluttonous burn-out adept who had extra cyberarms installed (in addition to his flesh arms instead of replacing them) so that he'd be able to eat and kill things at the same time.

Mr. Wizard - An full hermetic magician who has no first name.

Phantasm - Actually a group of runners pretending to be a single individual. The ability to accomplish jobs on opposite sides of the planet at the same time give credence to rumors that he is a ghost or a free spirit.

Spaceman - Has never actually been to space.
Dentris
Junkyard - A fence specialized in used goods.

Gizmo - An ex-corpo engineer recycled as a street inventor.

I'll second the rotfl.gif and I have to ask: What does the "Hellblast" do?

My personal favorite is one I stole from Fallout 2. A street doc named "Painless" Doc Johnson. The reason he's painless is because most people pass out from the pain before he's done.

I called the one-shot street samurai out of the SR3 main book Jack D'Rip and he mopped the floor with those damn gangers from the Food Fight module.

I had a rigger who was blind named Black Eyed Tom.

Polar Bear - An arms dealer who always had the AC down to 50 degrees or lower.

I had some extra bodies to fill up the roster called Meat Boy and Dead Meat in Japanese.

Big Balled Billy - An orc decker with an axe to grind about his "package" size.
holychampion
Ratchaser: Cat Shaman
Roger Ramjet: Amerind Rigger (stolen from NAN 1...I think.)
Greymaulkin: dwarf weaponmaster and fixer.
Andrew Marks: sniper street sam
Michael "Pierce": wolfshaman
and personal all time favorite. Created by a PC is... Billy billy Camel: a fixer, pharmacist from india.

The Balled Avenger (works best in a purely oral game)

It was a 2nd edition version of Fireball. But damage codes were fixed as part of the spell back then. Hellblast was the one with damage code of 'Force + 6 D' (and the drain was a killer).

I have since re-built Wiggy under fourth edition rules. If I ever play in a game and can convince the GM I'm not min-maxing (which usually takes about 1/2 hour of watching me role-play the happy idiot), I'll be playing Wiggy. biggrin.gif

Heh. Reminds me of Pronto from Schlock Mercenary. hmmm... do we have any readers of Schlock Mercenary in the audience? And, be honest, have any of your (N)PCs ever quoted "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates"?

(note to self: must now create NPCs based off of Sergeant Schlock, Cap. Tagon, Pronto, Kevyn, and, most especially, Ellen "Elf" Foxworthy. hehe...)
Trigger
The best small go-gang ever:

James "Fox" McCloud
John "Falco" Lombardi
Erin "Slippy" Toad
Peter "Peppy" Harington

And don't forget the Rigger running Battle Tac from the Semi behind them: Rob "64 Bits"

Reaper
My favorite NPCs from way back when I still GMed Shadowrun:

Trollkien - a teenage prodigy who goblinized into a Troll just after his first sci-fi novel made the best-seller list. After the change, he found he just couldn't hack it as a writer anymore (editors just won't take him seriously) and now he's a bitter old (for a troll) man who gets by on occasional bodyguard contracts. His handle is a play on the name of his childhood hero.

Sarge - Imagine the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket, but as a dwarf.
bibliophile20
One from a friend's game:
Troll: Fluffy... the Destroyer of Worlds.
