Do you still need players?
I read cyber pirates cover to cover last month, and then built a 6 man crew. I was gonna force them into my campaign as NPCs but if I could actually play one of them it would be a lot more fun

How 'bout a seal shifter? With demo?
Large Mike
Dec 20 2003, 01:20 AM
As any of my players can tell you, I'm not a big fan of the 'fruity' character types. (Not my terminology, borrowed.) I'm a distinct non-fan of shifters, drakes, otaku, free spirits, cyberzombies and (usually) ghouls. So, you can submit one and hope that you have a cool enough character for it to pass, but it's not horribly likely.
And, if I were a seal, well, first I wouldn't be in the carib. Second, I would eat and bask in the sun all day, and maybe play with a ball. If I were a seal that could change shape to human, I'd do exactly the same thing. Maybe it's just me.
Grifter, I use MSN (large_mike_ca@hotmail.com).
Everyone else: Yes, I'm still accepting players. Send me crap until I make the OOC and IC threads. Do it! Do it now kids! Stick it to the man!

Assuming my character is accepted, Jas Laine Loren Mountjoy the XIV will be donating approximately 304,945¥ (possibly quite a bit more depending on how many Contacts I finally decide on) for the ship and crew. Most of that will be reflected in his ability to finagle a good deal at the many ports of the Caribbean more than a reflection of actual equipment or ship parts, as well as beguilling the most unsavory scallywags he can find to join our motley crew.
He's also invested in navigation and cartography gear, and has the skills to get us where we need to go.

Cybereyes w/ low light system, and high powered Tool Laser

Alright, boys and girls, gather round on the story-time rug, because I'm about to tell you who made the cut.
Montjoy played by Dr. Funkenstein is plenty in. Also, at a donation of 304,945

he's fairly definatly in charge of this operation.
Iron Roger who should have the dark secret (name is actually Percy) flaw, is in.
Horatio Marley who's apparently a Shakespearian Rasta Wujen (only one of those things is true) is in.
Ziptide is in, even though I have nothing to say about him.
Johhny Mneum... err, Molotov is in, and for reference, came second in the donations. I'll leave it up to you guys on whether or not this makes him first mate.
Blitz, Yin and Yang are still welcome, if you can get me the character sheets for both before I finish making the ship and the OOC and IC threads.

Actually, as for the ship itself, I have a thing.
You see, I firmly believe that a ship should fit its' crew perfectly. So, you have 24 hours to give me suggestions on what you'd like to see on the ship, and then I'll build her. And then someone has to name her. I think this should be the captains' job.
24 hours (or less). Go.
Ol' Scratch
Dec 21 2003, 06:27 AM
Ack! I'll ponder a name then toss a few up to see what everyone else thinks. If anyone else has some ideas, please share -- I suck at names.

As for the ship, I think either one large Ship-classification one (with a Hull and Bullwark rating) or several smaller ones (one or two Yacht-based "command" ships with Speedboats and Sports Cruisers -- maybe even Water Scooters -- as attack vessels/back-up) would be best. Since we'd be a single target with the former, it needs to be something strong enough to handle focused concentration of fire. But with the latter, we could spread out and come at other vessels in all directions. I'd prefer the latter, but... whatever works.

For "accessories," I'm pretty open for anything. I'd like the ship to be fast first, a high Signature second, and lots of armaments third. Maybe a turret for everyone who can handle one (ie, anyone who has Gunnery), and several defensive measures (like Smoke Projectors). Armor is important -- at least enough to stop most "small arms" if possible -- but our goal will likely to be to move in quick, ravage the opposition, and get away just as quickly. Prolonged battles aren't for us. I haven't read up on ramming options, but some kind of "hook onto the other ship"-style ram would be pretty appropriate, too, I'd imagine.
Oh, and hydrofoils are just kick ass.

More ideas to come as they form... and stuff.

In any case, I'm about to go to bed but I thought I'd throw a few names I've been tinkering around for the last hour or so to see what you guys think. If nothing else, maybe they'll inspire some good suggestions.
The Bleeding Wench (hey, pirates can be a bitch, too)
The Immaculate ConceptionThe Kingston DoveThe Midnight StarThe Popped Cherry (

)
The Saucy StrumpetNot the greatest, I know.
Oh, while we're hashing out those ideas, I figured I'd bring up crew positions up, too. Based upon Large Mike's comments, I'm assuming that Mountjoy is "stuck"

with the position of
Captain, but we still have a few other positions that need to be filled. Below is a list I pulled straight out of my memory, so if it's not entirely accurate... well, get over it.

Note that since Mountjoy is also probably the best (if not the only) qualified
Navigator in the group, we can go ahead and assume that he's filling that position, too, unless someone is superbly qualified for the job.
That said, here's the list of positions (listed in command order) and what their job(s) are.
First Mate: The first mate is the second-in-command who's responsible for making sure everyone else (sans the captain) is doing their job and makes sure any orders the captain gives are followed properly and efficiently. When the captain's not around or off-ship, they're in charge. This position is usually filled by a "muscle" type, but a muscle type with brains and charisma. They're also responsible for keeping the crew in check in general, and for securing replacements whenever any men are lost (at least until the captain has a chance to look them over).
Quartermaster: The quartermaster's job is to acquire any day-to-day goods (mostly things like food, water, conjuring materials, and other crew-related supplies) and they're also responsible for keeping track of the cargo. They're usually responsible for taking care of harbormasters and that sort of thing, too, but this can be delegated to someone else if desired. If no one takes this position, it'll be delegated to the First Mate's duties as that's how it was generally handled on privateering vessels anyway (if memory serves).
Sargeant-at-Arms: The sargeant-at-arms is responsible for boarding/hunting parties and defending the ship's crew when under attack, either mundanely or magically. Think of them as the four star general of the crew to the captain's presidency, but only during a battle where the crew faces off against another crew. Otherwise, the first mate and quartermaster "outranks" them.
Master Gunner: While the sargeant-at-arms has full command of the crew during a battle, the master gunner's job is pretty much self-explainatory. They're responsible for the ship's guns and ammunition stores as well as commanding the gunners during a battle. The master gunner is also responsible for securing ammunition for the crew while in port, though he can easily assign this task to someone else. The master gunner outranks the sargeant-at-arms when it comes to gunnery and ship-to-ship combat, including long-range magical attacks.
Boatswain: The boatswain is responsible for the ship's maintenance and upkeep, including fuel concerns. Note that this is for the actual ship's maintenance, not onboard weapons or anything else. Obtaining supplies can be the boatswain job or he can delegate it to someone else as appropriate (usually the quatermaster). The boatswain also has dominant command over any crewmembers who don't outrank them and who aren't soldiers.
Pilot: The pilot's job is pretty much self-explanatory as well. They drive the ship. If a rigger, they're also responsible for ship-to-ship and ship-to-land communications and electronic warfare. If not, that task falls to the first mate or captain as appropriate. Although they're the lowest rank of the major positions, the pilot only takes orders from the captain, navigator, and first mate. If the ship features any remote weapons that the rigger-pilot can man, the master gunner can give them orders, too.
I believe that's about it. Anyone who doesn't snag one of these positions will just be assumed to be secondary mates. You'll still outrank the NPC crew for the most part, but that's about it.
If you want one of these positions, jump up and state what you feel qualifies your character for the job (if you have the appropriate skills, list your rating along with the skill if you don't mind sharing). If any positions are left open by the time the game starts, the captain'll just assign them to the best of my understanding of your characters.

Johnny can be First Mate, nevermind that he is probably unqualified for it...
His skills lie in diving, and blowing shit up. Perhaps in this brave new world of the 2060s, theres a new job for him. Also, hes a crackshot with a Gyrojet pistol.

Ziptide would probably be part of the senior bridge crew (since he has a good ship skill), as well as being a leader in boarding parties (he's a sorcerer, as well as a good shot with a gyrojet pistol).
As for the ship, Zip would probably prefer his own cabin to a communal berth - doesn't have to be big, but he IS a higher-ranking part of the crew - and an actual place for a shamanic lodge would also be very useful. He will probably ward a few areas of the ship, but warding the entire ship would be too much work. It would be good to have at least one smaller boat as well as the main ship, for boarding other vessels, going ashore, etc. Ziptide has the motorboat skill as well as the ship skill.

I'm nearly done with my drone rigger type. He can handle most of the more dull and menial tasks of repair/maintenance with the few drones he has not devoted to combat. If wanted, he can be the pilot too. Just tell me so I can shuffle some skill points around. He's also a nasty bugger in combat dominating the air, water, and ship with different drones. He's got 2 microskimmers that can go underwater and clean up any threats there, 2 rotodrones for various things like fast response aid in special places, and 2 Steel Lynx's for ship defense.
