Update 12/15 - 11:45pm
We have a single opening for Team 1. Ideally a mage or shaman - someone with some overt magical background. Interested? Please read the rest of this summary, and skim the attached posts, and drop me a PM to submit a character proposal.-----
I’m looking for a small team, no more than five to get started, to run the shadows in Denver.
I intend to base some of what goes on in the game on the Denver Shadowrun Missions adventure path, though I make no promises that I won’t modify things as I see fit along the way. Some of it just won't work for the game I intend, and I live in Denver so I think some of it needs a bit of tweaking. That said, the ideal players are those who have never GMed, played, or read those adventures. Or players who are mature enough to play their PC without metagaming.
I tend towards an RP heavy game, but we will likely find a happy medium for all involved as the game progresses. When it comes time to award Karma, I will take roleplaying, interaction, and the like heavily into consideration – it can be worth up to 50% of the Karma award possible during any particular scenario.
Before you commit to playing, understand that I am somewhat hyperactive when it comes to online games, and you’ll see posts from me at all times of the day and night. I’m looking for a commitment from every player to post daily, at least, with the usual caveats about life getting in the way, holidays, family commitments and the like. The game will take off shortly after Xmas, if we get all of our ducks in a row in a timely manner, but I will want to exchange email addresses with each of you to do some one-on-one RP to get you situated into town before we begin, if you're in a position to do so.
Also, I will be starting the game fairly low powered. These are the basics for you to consider while building a character:
- 320 BP to start with – you’re street level or otherwise just getting into the shadows.
- No more than 180 BP into attributes, including the cost for your metatype – so we’re talking about 180 for a human, 150 for an elf, plus the 30 BP metatype cost, etc.
- You will be one of the five basic metatypes in the core rules. No metavariants, no spirits, AI, SURGE, HMHVV or the like.
- Spend no more than 25 BP on positive qualities, and take no more than 25 points in negative qualities. These can both be overridden if you’re taking only one property, and it’s more than 25 points.
- Negative qualities must really be negative for you for them to be worth any points. If you’re a mage, don’t expect to get full points out of a quality that limits your cyberware – short form: make them truly negative, or I’ll be forced to veto them or reduce their value.
- Spend no more than 25 BP on gear, and while you can go to availability of 12, if an item is Restricted ® then the value may not exceed 9, and you may not start with any Forbidden (F) items at character generation. Restricted Gear quality will get you a single item of gear up to Availability 16/12R/4F, but any F gear will be difficult to explain in the extreme. Exceptions include Fake SINs and Fake Licenses, which can be purchased up to rating 3.
- You may pre-pay no more than one month of your chosen lifestyle - you are just getting started on these mean streets after all, and I want you hungry.
- When buying skills, you may take one skill at level 5 or two at level 4, with all others topping out at level 3, including skill groups – you are, after all, just getting started.
- You will start the game with one Denver area contact, with a contact rating of 3 and a loyalty of 2. You are allowed to decide who that is, and what role they play, and I’ll work it into the game. Do not take any other local contacts at character generation.
- Whatever your background, the following must be true:
- You are new to the Denver Metroplex
- You are new to shadowrunning, and looking to make a name for yourself and build your reputation
- You are a team player, and when you are called upon at the beginning of the campaign to join a team, you will be interested in, or at least okay, doing so
- You’re living in a city that is home to four different governments, dozens of corporations, and countless less formal organizations. Border crossings are a part of life here. Be prepared to be scanned, and show paperwork for any restricted gear you might be keen to transport across the DMZs between countries.
- I will allow gear, spells, etc from the following resources, always subject to GM fiat in deciding to ban things on a case by case basis: Arsenal, Augmentation, Corporate Enclaves, Emergence, Feral Cities, Ghost Cartels, On The Run, Runner Havens, Runners Companion, Street Magic and Unwired, as well as the SR4A Core Rulebook.
And one final request - please resist the urge to be as good as you can possibly be at one specific thing. While we are building a team, I would prefer to see characters who can survive on their own for fifteen minutes on the mean streets as well. You don't have to be great at everything, but you ought to be moderately self-sufficient.
After all that, if you’re still crazy enough to want to play with me, post below. I’ll want to see a paragraph or three about your character concept first, before I look at a character sheet, but feel free to post both if you have them all ready. I will review characters in a first come first served basis, and the first five approved will start the campaign.

I like the hungry, gritty, desperate feel of the campaign. I have never run in Denver nor played the mission adventures. So sign me up.
Will start working on a character concept, background, etc. and will post this afternoon.

That does sound pretty interesting.

I'm usually checking the forum multiple times per day, so a higher posting rate should be no problem.
Also, I do not know any of the Missions adventures. I basically only know that they exist.

I will have to think a moment about what kind of character I would like to play. Maybe an Adept for a change.

One thing: I would also restrict lifestyle to medium and below. It makes little sense in this context to have a high lifestyle (esp. buying it for one month with maximum bonus to the starting nuyen roll, which easily gives more money than the whole thing costs

).

I suspect you're going to fit right in here...
In my first draft, I included a restriction on lifestyle to Medium or lower, but took it out, not wanting to cramp anyone's style if they could come up with a reasonable reason for having a higher lifestyle when things are just getting started. That said, if anyone does want to be a rich kid who cashed in his trust fund and has been, until recently, living on caviar and champagne, you're going to have to sell me on it.

Lots of new games starting up this week. Are classes letting out?

Concept looks interesting. I can't tell from your description, but do you expect the players to "come together" into a team right away, or are you planning to have them fend for themselves on the street for a while (one-on-one)?

Excellent question. I would expect some "getting started" time by one-on-one email before we dive into team interactions, but the first adventure is designed around a scratch team of new arrivals, so there's a built in hook to get everyone working together early on. There will likely be cut scenes between adventures as well, and once the team has gelled, I'd likely post some of our email correspondence from the beginning as "flashbacks."

Updated original post to include which source books I currently possess and will allow, with caveats, material to be pulled from. Currently in contention are Isinghar, Thanee and Kim, just looking for a character background from you to get started.
Also I will highly recommend the Quiz from Runner's Companion as a tool for ensuring a thorough background for your character.

I had this idea for a low level corporate manager who is on the wrong end of a corporate powerplay.
He was an up and comer, with tons of promise. He and a rival from another department were up for the same job, and some how he found himself on the wrong end of a Corp Sec Investigation into fraud and embezzelment.
Next thing he knows he's fired, his Corp Enclave home locked out and his Bank Accounts are emptied to 'repay the embezzelment.
A human with a basic logician implant suit, good mental stats, mediocre physical stats.
Went from living the Medium Lifestyle to Squatting and fighting for cans of food. He's definitely hungry and willing to do anything, including get some payback.. if he can ever figure out who framed him.

Do you want anything character-related via PM here for now or just posted to this thread?
And a background-related question:
What kind of "street powers" are prominent in the Denver shadows? Gangs, as usual, I suppose.
Mob? Yakuza? Triads? What are the syndicate "big guns" in Denver?
And are those limited to certain sectors in Denver?

A number of different gangs, yes, of course. There are two major mafia factions in the area, plus yakuza, triads, and some native american criminal organizations. In addition, there's the UCAS, CAS, Pueblo Corporate Council and Sioux governments in charge of different portions of the city, and the ZDF - Zone Defense Force acting as a neutral law enforcement agency over the whole of the metroplex.

I was actually thinking about running the Denver missions myself as my tabletop group is going to take a long time to get through Seasons 0/1. That said, I haven't read any of them yet so I still qualify.

Yeah, 180 has to cover your eight standard attributes, plus your metatype cost. Edge and magic can be purchased with other points.

"Cruz" - Tony Santa CruzBackground Story: [ Spoiler ]
Cruz is a cop… He comes from a long line of cops… His father, brothers, uncles, godfather, cousins, grandfather, grandmother… are all cops. He grew up wanting to be a cop, and he reached his goal 3 months ago when he graduated from the Seattle Lone Star Academy! Although not the brightest of trainees, he did make it in the end! He felt so proud and his parents had invited the whole Santa Cruz clan to the graduation ceremonies. It was the best day of his life…
However the next day Lone Star lost the exclusive contract it held with the city of Seattle to Knight Errant, and suddenly Cruz found himself unemployed and with no where to go, since Knight Errant refused to hire any ex-Lone Star agents. He pleaded with the recruiting officers, and humiliated himself before the hundred other applicants who were lining up for jobs. Yet he was casually tossed aside like a begger on the streets...
It was a bitter day...
Most of his family found themselves un-employed as well, which forced Cruz to move out of his parents’ house so as to not burden them further. After spending two months crashing along the mean streets of the Barrens, Cruz got a call from a colleague of his from the Academy who was now in Denver. He was looking for some muscle to help him with a few jobs… and Cruz signed on. He got a bus ticket to Denver and has been squatting in the city ever since. He has run a couple of jobs for his Academy friend, Carlos Ruiz, who is somewhat connected with the local Mob…

With a possible concept forming I went for a quick trawl through the augmentation tables to see what was legal. Ah, the vagaries of the availability ratings.
Orthoskin 2 or Dermal Sheath 2, both ok at 8R and 12 respectively. Dermal Plate 2, the one I actually was thinking of, is out, at 10R. Silliness.

Color me interested. I've yet to dive into a gritty, street-level game. My schedule should allow for at least a post or 2 a day (work has an odd schedule, not much free time on a couple days, lots of time on others).
As for a character concept, I'm thinking either social-ish character or somebody with some logic skills. How much hacking and/or electronics stuff will be involved?

If you opt for a character who is a hacker/technomancer, I will ensure that you don't feel slighted or overworked. The first couple adventures in the set are pretty good about allowing for flexibility in that regard.
Right now I have character concepts for a face/research styled character, and a more street sam type, though overlap is probably a good thing in some areas.

Updating the original post to include info on those who have submitted basic ideas - I will still be honoring those early posters who can't get me a character summary until this evening or even tomorrow morning, but I wanted to make sure everyone knows where we're at.
And updating the gear information: going to rule no alpha or better grade "used" ware of any kind, and Restricted Gear will get you a single item of availability up to 16, 12R or 4F. Word of warning, Forbidden gear would be harder to explain if you get caught up at a guard post on one of the borders.

"Warden" - Andrei BureBackground Story: [ Spoiler ]
Andrei Bure started his career out in Fargo (north dakota in the old days) as a front-desk secretary at Universal Omnitech. Mostly, he was there to fill the company's racial quota, but he was actually fairly decent at the gig as well, so he stayed on a while. But the average wage slave 9-5 desk job got tiring quickly, so he decided to try for something a little more exciting. He signed up for corporate security and began training up for the position. Didn't take long before they realized he was quick on his feet and good with a rifle, so he got in on a front-line position ASAP. Things were good for a few years, and he even got a couple nice bioware implants to help him out.
Then, as his shift was winding down just before the weekend, disaster struck. Literally. A group of shadowrunners had come to do some B&E, but their wheelman was new at the game and a little overeager with his accelerator. Andrei was flat footed and so got slammed by their van going nearly top speed as the rigger made an attempt to break through the gate. It should've killed him, but he barely pulled through. Unfortunately, his spine was not so lucky. Andrei was now paralyzed from the waist down. His only options were expensive replacement or getting (legally restricted) reaction enhancers to replace the torn spinal nerves. UO had already fired him for "poor performance" thanks to the runners, and his funds were limited, so he put a call into a contact of his in Denver who would be able to quickly get him the needed cyberware replacements. It wouldn't get him his job back, but it would at least he could walk without assistance.
Andrei met with Dr. Nedmeyer in Denver, nuyen got transfered under the table, and the old corpsec guard got himself patched up, even better than before. Getting permits for the ware was a simple affair in Nedmeyer's back office compared to petitioning a the UCAS or local government. Now, with little money, now ticket back home, and only a few tips from Dr. Nedmeyer, Andrei has started his life back on the bottom.
Description:[ Spoiler ]
Tall, wirey ork; Light skin, mouse brown hair, grey eyes. Very human-looking. (As per quality) Usually seen in bulky jacket with t-shirt and khakis or jeans. Wears a nice pair of glasses (not prescription) and heavy work boots with steel toes.
Background
[ Spoiler ]
It was 28 years ago, on a cold December evening, that a blissfully happy elvenwoman gave birth to her first child. The fortunate family Silvertree named the very pale but healthy daughter Kimberly and with that her Christian name became Kim. She grew up in that small community in the Tir and since she was the only
child she got spoiled. Mostly by her dad, who took her out hunting sometimes too. Although she liked running through the woods alone, Kim wasn't very satisfied with her life in her hometown. The restless feeling became too much to ignore when she awakened. The big city was calling her, but she knew she couldn't go there without finishing her education. She also needed an edge to get a good life there. She heard some rich people would pay big bucks for a detox spell, so she found herself a shaman who could help her with that. At the age of 20 she finally made her way to Portland. It wasn't easy to get a suitable job there and she worked as a waitress for 2 months. Feeling terrible about her new livingconditions
she packed her bags to try her luck in Seattle. There her beauty was recognized and ignorance overlooked, when she walked into an escort-agency. Kim worked very hard to get to know more about the corporations her clients were working for and it didn't take long before she had a say in the conversations.
She occasionally went back to visit her parents and to learn some more magic to make her work easier and varied. Some of her clients were very eccentric and it usually took her a while to find out what exactly it was they wanted and what they were willing to give to get it. In 7 years she had become pretty good and she enjoyed her rich life. That's when she was asked for another assignment. Not just the average suit, but a runner needed a representative date. He told Kim about the dangers he had faced and she fantasized about the adventures. Finally she'd met someone who actually lived the dream she had. She wanted to see more of him and they became lovers. Dismayed by his persistent refusal to take her with him on one of his missions, she didn't go to him when a friend asked her for help with her kidnapped son. In stead she put up a big fight and left. She was going to show him that she could do it herself. All she needed was some distraction, so she called a number she got from her ex-boyfriend to hire some people.
Things didn't go too well, sure she got her distraction and she got the kid out, but those people she hired weren't too pleased to be used as decoys without knowing. Maybe it's time to leave the city?

Add (spoiler) at the beginning and (/spoiler) at the end but use square brackets not round ones.

Still interested but my first idea ended up a lot like Sab's, and I wasn't very fast at getting back to this thread. If I think of something awesome I'll join the queue, but otherwise I'll probably just watch.

Here's a little background for my Human Adept.
Her parents died during riots following the big Matrix Crash, when she was still a kid. As her familiy hasn't been rich, she ended up in a public orphanage and a few years after she was on the streets, more by choice than anything else. Drawn to the big city, she made it from her home town to Denver, hoping for a better life. As she couldn't afford a hotel or rent a flat, she ended up in gang territory sooner or later, and quickly earned the respect of them after she had a few clashes with some of their grunts. Being a pretty young woman, she seemed an easy victim, but she proved to be a bit harder to handle and mixed them up quite comfortably, even those that were twice her size. Her parents had put her into a martial arts school back then, so she could learn to defend herself and to improve her confidence. The lessons had come to her quite naturally. She was gifted. Unbeknownst to her or anyone else at that time, she is an Adept, and her moves are greatly enhanced by her Magic. One followed the other and soon she was on the paylist of a local syndicate, doing little, but rather well-paying (for her, anyways) jobs for them.

Okay, I think I've got my five, as well as a number of alternates, picked. If you've had a PM from me, you're in, we just need to flesh out your characters, get some more background started and the like. Look for more PMs from me, and we'll move the initial roleplay to email for the short term. I'll get OOC/IC threads started as well.
I don't think I can send or receive PMs.

You're right, I tried, you can't. That's odd. Play around with your options under 'My controls'. Should have something in there.
Edit: My Controls -> Board Settings (bottom left) -> Change Disable Personal Messager Options to No

I feel privileged. I got boosted to member status on my 4th post, because I made a Mod laugh.

That explains why I couldn't get a PM to you, Kim. I've got you on my short list, however, for replacements or increasing the size of the party if we find a shortage of talent.
