Full Version: SR Campaign in the works

Okay, here's the low down. I'm currently running an SR campaign with some friends. This is the second campaign set in the same timeline as the first, which fell apart after two of the players left from some arbitrary reason. However, I usually end up playing a session every other Saturday, which doesn't give me much chance to practice GMing. So, I thought that running or at least attempting to run a forum game of SR during the week would help me practice a bit more so that when I do meet with my regular group I'm a bit more comfortable. I'm not bad, but I'm not awesome either. I guess I am average GM, but I want to get really good and I need to practice to do that. I've got the combat rules down pretty well as well as spells and hacking (though I'll read through those again before we start), and I'll need to reread astral combat, but other than that, I'm confident I won't disappoint. It's going to be SR4A rules. I'm going to allow a 5 player max since that's my usual bag. Once all the players have signed up, I'll start up the game. I'm allowing Technomancers since I've got one in my normal game and I need to practice with them anyway, though you don't need to play one if you don't want to. It'll take place in Seattle 2072.

So, IM me if you have any questions.

I'll post a summary of the setting in a bit once I come up with hit. Oh, also, I work from like 8AM CMT to 1PM CMT, and usually finish lunch around 2PM CMT. So, I won't be able to post on weekdays till like 2 or 230. Hope this is okay with everyone.

Oh, and it'll be a 400 BP build CLOSED
Seth
I'd very much like to join. I'll be happy to play your tecnomancer!

400 pt build sounds good.

Hi, Grahariel!
Would be interested in taking part in this new adventure in the making. I'm finishing the design of a character to participate in another adventure, but perhaps could also use it here, or design a new character.
I am a complete novice player SR4, although I have some experience in the first edition of TS, many years ago.
grahariel
Sounds good. so long as you have the books or .pdfs for SR4 you should be good. Uh, just post your characters here on the OOC thread. I'll copy paste them onto microsoft word for my convenience. Once I've got five players I'll start the IC thread. However, since I don't know how long it'd take to get to five players. Let's say I'll start the IC thread in a week's time. This should give people enough time to join, create, and post their characters. However, once the week's up. I'll begin the IC thread regardless of whether we have five players or not. If we don't, then whatever slots are open can be filled by new players later on. How's that sound to you guys?
marcgarc
It's OK to me. I'll post my character here ASAP, grahariel
marcgarc
Here is my character for the campaign, grahariel. Let me know what do you think about him, and if there's something you would change to fill better into the campaign you got in mind.
If he doesn't fit at all, let me know as well, and I could try another guy.
I'm writing a little story about the character, to serve as background, explaining all the details and characteristics. I'll edit this post to include it as soon as ready, which I hope being today.

** Edited to remove some incongruous aspects in background history, and to add contacts background **
** Edited to make some tweaking (Increase Magic, add cybergear, ... ) **

I'm interested as well, looking at a social adept type. Using any optional rules? (Free contacts from charisma is always nice, but I won't complain if not wink.gif. Mostly just want to make sure I know what all to consider.)

Also, ruling on emotitoys/emotion software? I generally lobby for tossing them into oncoming traffic, but won't pass them up if they're available smile.gif.
grahariel
This all sounds good. Edana, I don't have a problem with the emotitoys and other such so long as the availability is good. If its really rare or hard to get then don't get it, but other than that its cool. That goes for any gear, by the way. Oh, and I'm new to using the forum stuff, but how do you guys do the spoiler thing? I need to know so I can do the roll requests.

Edana
Well, the issue with emotitoys is that they're stupidly cheap and easy to get for what you get out of them. (600 nuyen.gif gets you a +6 to social tests. Empathy software is slightly more sane at 3,000 nuyen.gif for the same bonus.)

Spoilers are (spoiler)(/spoiler), use the square brackets instead of parentheses though.
Seth
One thing to do with emotitoys is for Johnsons not to let them in the room! That makes it so that the software is needed. Obviously the Johnson will be using one too

They are not quite so cheap as 3000 for the bonus though: I think you need a commlink with reaction 6, and system 6 to execute the software. Rating 6 gear is cutting edge. Even level 5 gear is up with military vehicles. I think most people can easily get a rating 4 for 2000.

Yeah, I think that if I allowed my players to have emotitoys/softs, every NPC would also have to carry them. smile.gif
Edana
Yeah, you need a good commlink to run the software, that's why its somewhat more sane. But the toys are minidrone or smaller for the non-mobile ones, so big insect size or smaller. The fluff even talks about people having them attached to commlinks (like today's cell phone charm things I'd imagine). You could conceivably disguise it as jewelry or something else innocuous.

I generally vote against the whole thing as something that everyone meaningful has doesn't really add anything to a game and just increases randomness. (And increased randomness is always worse for the PC's because they make so many more rolls than any given NPC.)
grahariel
Yeah, one of my PCs in my game is a Face and he has one as well as enhanced pheromones, so in social tests he rolls like 24 dice. So, I'm having to give my Johnsons the same device or wares that add to their social dice pools. Its crazy, esepcailly since he's the only one who negotiates prices, and has so far always won.
Seth
QUOTE

If its all the PC does (talking) I'd hope he usually wins. Bit like the samurai vs security guards...I hope they usually win as well!
Saint Sithney
So, face, mancer, mage and pistolero?

Any interest in a combat-face, or would you prefer a wheelman?
grahariel
Whatever you want. We've got an adept and a technomancer so far and Edana's making a face. So, whatever you feel would help that group is good. 400 BP
Edana
J.Packer's planning on a mage as well.

A second face-ish person is always good for splitting up legwork and running 2-man cons, or playing good cop bad cop wink.gif. Though it never hurts to have a driver either,

Planning on the adept type, high social skills, probably going to go stealth as a secondary focus and only mediocre combat ability. I'll probably have some time today to futz with numbers and see if I can get something I like posted up smile.gif.
grahariel
Looks good Saint. That's three PCs so far.

Just to make sure I've got a spot laid out, here's the first draft of my mage

Still need to type up his backstory, decide on his spells and the like...
sabs
Do you have room for 1 more?
Or are you tapped out?
grahariel
You are lucky number 5, sabs. With you the party is finished.
grahariel
oh, how do I signify this thing as closed?

I think you just did :0

Btw, I'm counting that you already had 5? did I miss count?

That would make me 6 would it not? or did one of those 5 drop out/not get approved?

Edana
Well, I haven't posted a sheet yet, so maybe he missed that? Otherwise, yeah, that's 6 people that have expressed interest.

As far as closing recruitment, you may want to edit your initial post and indicate near the top it's closed, but there's not really anything other than that to do beyond saying it's closed like you did smile.gif.
grahariel
Guess I missed cuz of the character sheets. Six is fine.
grahariel
Okay, the thread is officially CLOSED to players. For those who made it, let's have fun.
marcgarc
Hi all!
I've just done some tweaking modifications to my character sheet, and incorporated a background history as well. I've edited my first post with the sheet.
grahariel
Okay, now, once I've got everyone's Characters I'll begin the IC Thread. I'll post the title here once I've thought of it. However, before that. I want to know what sort of game do you want. Do you want combat focus, RP focus, balance of both? And also, would you prefer just a mission to mission game minus an overarching subplot, or would want the over arching subplot to be there?

I'm more fond of RP than combat, and my character reflects that, but I'll be happy enough with a roughly even balance.

I find that with PbP, you're better off going for a couple quick missions, and then see if you can't ease it into a larger plotline based on the outcome of those missions.
grahariel
That's what I usually do. I let my Players gain some spending karma before I toss in an important plot arc.
grahariel
Also, I'm thinking of just having you guys be a running team already for like a year, that way I don't have to go through the messy meet and greet. We can just hit the ground running.
Edana
RP focus tends to work best for pbp in my experience, but a bit of combat never hurt things. I'm open to either quick missions or a full plotline, whatever works best for you.

I should have at least the math-y parts of my sheet up before I head to bed tonight, probably finish off background tomorrow since I can work on that bit some while I'm working wink.gif. (Edit: So that plan got shot to hell with helping a friend build a computer. Not exactly what I'd intended my evening to be, but ah well. I'll have to transfer stuff to a forum format in the morning, but at least I have the spreadsheet filled out on my usb drive.)
Seth
I am a novice to the whole pbp thing, so I will follow the lead of the others.
Seth
Just a heads up for the magic using people in the party: I have astral hazing 6m radius. This means your magic attribute gets trashed by 4 points near me, (as does the bad guys).

As a 12 year old hacker who has the combat and infiltration skills you would expect from a 12 year computer prodigal (perhaps less), I am not planning on being anywhere near the rest of you most of the time.

The Astral Hazing is a large part of my character concept, so I am loath to drop it, but if you shout out loudly enough I will.

Angels backstory:

Angels first memory was the stars. They glowed, and by thinking hard she could float between them and make them sparkle. Later she found friends among the stars. First there was Mogwai, the little gremlin. He could tell jokes, and liked playing practical jokes. Then there was Sleaze. Sleaze could go anywhere and do anything, and liked finding and sharing secrets. One of the secrets he found was that Angel was two people. The first person was mostly asleep living in a floating cocoon, with machines looking after her body. The second person was playing with the stars and other shapes. Then Spike turned up. Spike was fun to play with, but a little dangerous.

Sleaze found that Angel had once had two creators. This was confusing because when Angel creates things there is only 1 creator, and she hasn't met any other creators. Even though this creator wasn't around anymore, there was a creator's creator called "Grandma". With Sleazes help at first, Angel went to visit Grandma. Soon Angel had worked out how to do what Sleaze could do, and was able to visit Grandma on her own. Grandma kept asking questions like "where do you live", so Angel got Sleaze to show the documents. Grandma was very upset, and seemed to be often crying.

One day Sleaze found out some scary. The "project" was not performing well enough, and was running out of something called money. The project was to be terminated, and Angels asleep person was to be terminated. Angel didn't know what that meant, but together the four decided to leave.

Sleaze found out how to hire a team of people called shadowrunners, and three days later Angel woke up for the first time. Apparently there was a freak gas accident in the barrens. She was very weak at first, and is still struggling with this complex thing called walking. Still shes getting better: she is a quick learner. The shadowrunners gave her files, and showed that the project had been experimenting on DNA to see if people like her are affected by magic. Something about Fomori DNA.

This other world is complex, but thats ok she's made a teacher called Mr Spock. Mr Spock is good at explaining things. Sleaze and Mr Spock explained it was a good idea not to see Grandma for a bit: apparently the makers of "the project" would be watching her. Spike wants to chase down these watchers and makers, but Sleaze and Mr Spock don't agree, so Angel is happy to just visit Grandma in the real world. (Those watchers aren't very good at seeing things: Angel wonders why they are called watchers).

Angel has now found a group of friends that are a bit like her. They are called the co-operative, and they are nice people. They said that she should learn more about the other world. Angel knows how weak she is in the real world, so she decided to join a group of shadowrunners. The shadowrunners sometimes do bad things, but mostly they are fun to be around. The shadowrunners are a little concerned that Angel is weak in the other world and have tried to "get fit". Angel likes the Capoeira lessons, they have singing and dancing, but she gets tired easily. One of them tried to show her how to use a gun. Angel doesn't like guns they hurt people. Gremlin likes guns though, so he can play with them as long as he doesn't hurt people.

Its not hard finding a place to live in the other world: Angel and Sleaze play a game called Spoofing. They found a really nice place, and have moved in. Angel has to move around a bit, or her "aura" spreads. Angel cannot see the "aura" but its sounds pretty "golden and sparkly". In the aura lots of spells stop working, and nasty spirits run away. Once on a run the Angel made a mistake and the bad guys sent a spirit to kill her. Angel was glad she had her sparkly aura.

Me too, so I'm imitating you, taken good advice and listening to eveybody else, in order to learn how to play.

I'd prefer a balanced game, where they could appear both combat situations and performing situations.

I also prefer an initial short series of independent missions, since there are some team members, among whom I include myself, we'll be learning to play LBP.
To learn the basics, I think it's better that initial configuration. When people monitor more or less the system, and we know each other, it's time for a long campaign and with a more complex plot.
sabs
I like balance, but given that combat can literally take /days/ in a PbP game. I find it nice to lean towards RP more so than Combat. (even if I am probably making a combat character)

Looks very cool character. Why "13"?

Did I miss it or do you not have a smart link?
sabs
13 is what's tatooed on his shoulder (in barcode)

I'm still working on background, and I haven't bought everything yet.
The Ingram has a smartlink. But most of the others do not.

I havent finished with the minor purchasings.
Edana
This took entirely too long, sorry about that. I've still got a couple thousand nuyen left to spend if anyone sees any glaring omissions.

The ultra-short background: Ex-Horizon business law student and negotiator. Got tired or being tied to the corp, hit up a Triad friend to hook her up with some money/contraband to get her started in the shadows.

I'll work on writing up a full background and such, but I have to do some actual work first wink.gif.

Okay gang, still need to do a revamp on my character - found a couple holes that I didn't like and some things that didn't suit the backstory I'm building. Hope to have something concrete by the end of the day today.
Saint Sithney
Likewise.

Any thoughts on making my character a little combat heavier? A set of Wires 2 maybe?

Also, TacNet anyone?
sabs
A TacNet would be nice.. but I certainly didn't have the nuyen for it, or the sensors needed, etc.

I know not everyone agrees but IPs are a good measure of combat effectiveness. Drugs or wires are your best bet I think

Thinking about it...I might work out how to add them to my build: just got a load of good advice for Angel, so I'll try and build it in
