Well in Shadowrun you have a lot of languages to use from. I have personal favorites for all my characters to use. And ussually I'll get into my characters and actually try to use them as much as possible.

I probably knew Spanish better when I had an "Spanish" UCAS citizen, then when I was going through High School.

Now to my point, I ussually will also try to use those lovely characters they have on any documents my character is making using. Yes I would even as a player make my own e-mails so that the GM could actually feel like one of the NPCs was reading it instead of me just talking about it.

So what is my point about all this. Well where do I find those usefull cheat sheats about how to make some of those cool and sometimes annoying symbols.

Maybe I'm just searching in the wrong places with google, but I can't find a thing.

I also would like to know what your experience with actually trying to role play any languages. I'm sure I'll be able to remember a funny time if I think for a little.

Do you mean the dots an such you find over letters like in the name below?

Grübber

I get them form MS word. If thats not what your meaning then i haven't a clue. Sorry

As for roleplaying them, IRL being that i can't do accents at all, thus languages other then English(bad) generally doen't happen, tho the characters i play close to allways have them high enough as not to show any accent.

On here i use a translantion website

On a Mac it's just a matter of spending a few minutes figuring out what character each option-key gives you. For instance, I get an umlaut by pressing option-u ¨ which will then get applied to the next letter I type, providing it's valid (ü, ï, ö, ä, ë, ÿ) but will just show up on its own if an invalid letter is typed next (¨t). On a PC, I can't really help you.

I was playing my elf character who had the spanish decent, and I started talking in Spanish, and one of the other characters is looking at me strange. I have no idea why. I talk to him after the game and whatever word I had thought I was using wasn't what I wanted I was saying something like I'll dance with you or something odd instead of taking you out. I have no idea of what the Spanish is because I lost most of the language after leaving high school and also not playing that character. However it still makes me laugh at my complete bad use of the language.

I used to have a Mac back in the good old days, now I have this piece of trash that some loser that owns so much crap that is so expensive. I hear he also has the rights to making Shadowrun Video games, I could thrash that loser. I will continue to allude to him without saying his name. Because I personally think he has hitman out there to take out people who put him down.

Anyways in Microsoft word you go to Insert on your lovely toolbar, and then select Symbol. There are all sorts of really cool choices besides just the ussually language ones. I think it is a party nice thing to have. Supposedly there is a way to use the alt key, plus the number pad and get different things. I can get a lot of interesting symbols but never the ones I want.

Go to start. Click run. Type in "charmap". Run it. Scroll down to your font. Bask in the glory that is a bazillion different symbols. Finally learn how to make that damned "ss" thing for German. Yeß. (alt+0223 if you care.)

For the interested, that character is just option-s on a Mac.

Limesstraße.

You can also get the character map from Start->Programs->Accessories on some Windows PC's.

For xp users. Add ->system tools->Character map to the above

Great tip for Shadowrun if you need to make a ¥ sign and aren't on Dumpshock to use the little button thing, hold down ALT and hit 413 on the numberpad (it doesn't work if it's not the numberpad).

Or Option-Y if you're on a Mac smile.gif

Word has more mnemonic shortcuts to commonly used symbols listed in that insert>symbols dialog. You can set your own there as well (for ¥, for example) if you are going to use them over and over.

For the umlats and accents it works pretty much like the mac (in word, not in general). ctrl+: then the vowel gives you that vowel with an umlat. ctrl+^ vowel gives you the vowel with a hat.
Kagetenshi
Control-i for the hat on guess which OS.
My only gripe is that it won't apply a hat to a j, which is really only a problem when typing out physics problems anyway.
