Full Version: Edge let's you exceed hit limits?

I keep hearing on the forums that Edge lets you exceed hit limits (such as the force of a spell limits how many raw (not net) hits you can get on the spellcasting test). Does anyone have a page number/FAQ/errata-link that says this? As far as I can see a hit limit is a hit limit and Edge just adds more dice to the test just like any other bonus.

Ok, for a third time now. cyber.gif

QUOTE (Shadowrun Fourth Edition; pages 171-172)
A spell’s Force limits the number of hits (not net hits) that can be achieved on the Spellcasting Test. So if you cast a Force 3 spell and get 5 hits, only 3 of those hits count. Inother words, Force serves as a limiter effect on spells—the more oomph you put into the spell, the better you can succeed with it. This limitation does not apply to Edge dice that are used to boost a spell.

Seems rather cut and dried to me, with the exception of Sustaining Foci of course.

would have been nice for them to include something about this in the "uses for edge on p. sixty-whatever.

Follow up question: is this just the +Edge dice option or does this apply to the "exploding 6's" or failure-rerolls option too? I'm thinking just the +Edge option.

Agreed, it would have been much easier if they had.

Hmm, I think via straight RAW it only applies to the hits (Including the exploding sixes.) generated by the actual Edge Dice themselves.

But then again in my campaigns I don't bother seperating Edge Hits from non-Edge Hits because I think it's a pain in the ass, so Edge is a bit more powerful from Mages then it is in straight RAW.

When you go with the +edge you get the exploding 6's automatically. I'd let the extra dice from 6's count as extra edge dice because if you hadn't spent the edge you wouldn't get the dice. If you spend the edge on the reroll I wouldn't let you bypass the hits. RAW supports the second but not the first.

We've implemented skill caps as well and when a player chooses to use edge, I allow them to bypass all caps...it hasn't been game breaking or abused so far. So, while mages get to bypass their force caps on spells, the rest of the PCs get to bypass their skill caps on all their skills...

I think it makes the use of Edge a bit more dramatic, but like I said, my players don't use Edge all the time nor have they tried to abuse it, so its not a big deal in my games.
