Ok had more then one question here but might be able to clear all up with one example.
Jackyl the Mage casts mystic armor spell on a teammate through sustaining foci.
Does foci stay on Jackyl's person, does it stay with teammate who received spell or is not possible to use it on anyone other then person who's "bonded" to foci?

The focus itself has to stay with the spellcaster but you can cast the spell itself on another person and still use a sustaining focus to hold the spell. Does that answer your questions?

I want to say that in previous editions, such things were typically left on the recipient of the spell rather than on the casting mage. Given that they were traceable to the casting mage, it made the mage be careful about where he left those things lying around.

No, that was and is Anchoring Foci.
Sustaining Foci are just like any other foci; only the owner can use it (cast spells into it), and it instantly deactivates if it leaves the owner's possession.

actually, that was SR3 sustaining foci as well. the focus had to remain with the effect it was sustaining.
presumably, in SR4 they decided to just unify all the basic focus rules.

Or Spell Locks.

The old Spell Locks (pre-SR3 sustaining foci) had to stay with the effect as well.
edit: As Ancient History said above. Too many damn windows open.

That's sort of the problem, long time player for editions 1-2 now back in area and converting to 4th edition I think we've done good job of converting. (his total karma for street cred purposes was just funny). But my stumbling block has been his two long time spell locks....guess just no easy way to convert them over.

I'd just go with whatever feels right to you. Mechanically it shouldn't make a difference (outside of the link between Foci and he who bonded it), and allowing the Focus to stay with the effect could bring up interesting problems like the recipient of the Spell trying to abscond with the mage's Focus (if the opportunity ever arises).
