If you could do a game, via fourm/webcam/voice/IM/IRC/Ect, with any 6 of the big names on Dumpshock, who would be your players?

Me: Frank, MFB, Fist3.0, Fortune, Bull. Preferably Video, but I dream!

Edit: Woops, forgot to mention it would be SR4.
Adarael
I have no freakin' idea, honestly. Whoever put in concepts that would work best with whatever I wanted to run at the moment. That may sound like a cop-out, but I don't give a crap who I'm gaming with as long as we're having fun.
DTFarstar
Frank because he's leaving, mfb.... I don't think we view the game world the same way so it would take some heavy adaption on his part. I'm a big fan of 4 or 5 player games so everyone but mfb. Including him if we could figure out a way to play that wouldn't make me want to hit him with a book or him want to destroy my computer(and possibly soul)

Chris

EDIT: Really hard to give an honest answer here because I LIKE all you guys, but I'm not sure if we could play well together.

Personally I prefer to play the games with my friends. I don't know anyone on here and the only people that ever stand out are the ones who, at the time, seem like complete smeg heads for arguing something that seems incredibly wrong. Of course they aren't and they aren't necessarily wrong, they just happen to be on the opposing side of whatever argument. I'd actually like to meet who I was going to be playing with and see if we get along before I spent an evening of my time hanging out with them.

The game would have to be in person. I get distracted too easily by real things making a virtual presence unworkable.

I totally agree with odinson here.
Why bother playing with people who you find abrasive. nyahnyah.gif

In a game full of smeg-heads, I can see myself doing a "Lone Star nukes your safehouse, everyone dies" rotfl.gif

Defintely in video with them. smile.gif

I didn't call either of them a name. smile.gif I like both of them. But let's be honest, there are some people that jsut aren't compatible. IMO, those two would not be.
mfb
video?

i'd jump in a game with/by Doc Funk if i had the time and inclination. i've gamed with enough jerks to know they're often fun to game with.
fistandantilus4.0
rotfl.gif Very amused by that actually.

I do have to say that I'm suprised by your choice of names. I'd never think of myself as such for example. I'd think of folks like Kage, or hyzmarca and Wounded Ronin to get a game with. And Bastard. Just 'cause I love referring to him in conversation. I'm juvenile that way.
Seven-7
Honestly I've never had a good TT/online 'group' gaming experiance. Reading the examples of play in SR3/4/DND is like reading porn to my GM mind.

Plus I've always wanted to do Video Conference gaming ;p
tisoz
I have gamed with some of the Big Names, and some of the smaller names of Dumpshock both online and in person. I would happily game with any of them again.

The DSer that I have only seen and HEARD GM that gave me the impression of having BIG FUN is Dashifen. The last couple of years at GenCon I have been awed by the spirit and volume of his gaming.

99% of my gaming has been online, in a message board format. after all this time, i've found i prefer it to tabletop gaming, because it gives me time to consider my actions and get more into my character.

not that i haven't also seen horrible, horrible pr0n-posting. there is nothing more horrible than two grown men posting lesbian sex (and you though the martial arts rules were unrealistic!) *shudder*

Yes, I agree. I do not need to make a decision or post my response at 3am in the morning when I am playing on a forum game. Consequently my decisions are better and I enjoy the games more.

Rather than Video, How many people have tried VTTs, I know WOTC are calming that D&D insider will be the next best thing to a 48 hour gaming marathon but there are others out there, that are probably better, multi system and free!

If anyone is interested try looking at www.rptools.com and their maptool product. I has a rapid development curve (a new build is out most weeks) and quick access to the developers.

I have asked for a few things that would be useful for Shadowrun specifically (mainly in the built in dice roller) but on the whole it should work quite well with out that, and it can be got round (you just get all the results, rather then just passes and glitches)

Just a thought if anyone hadn't seen it.

I have not. I wanted to. Your address goes to a domain holder page.

As far as RPGing online, I hate it. First, the medium is not immediate enough for me and SR. I want my gratification NOW! Whenever I have played online, I feel like I want to post almost all the time, but have to wait for others to post.

2) The lag time some people take to compose their thoughts and decide their action can kill a game. I have seen several games dry up and die because the player needed to put his character in harms way and refused to do so. This wasn't like chess where an opponent is forcing you to decide which piece gets sacrificed, this is finishing the meet with the Mr. Johnson, finishing legwork, and trying to pull off the the run.

C) Another player type is the is the my character is so quiet, dark and mysterious. After the initial, lengthy post describing the character's badassery, the player sits on the internet sideline. This would be a good medium for such a character as the player could describe their characters observations, thoughts or moods. But I have yet to be involved in a game where it was taken to advantage.

Fourth, there are the people like me who post too damn much, try to play off whatever the other characters give them, and generally become a nuisance.
CyberKender
Since I went and moved 200 miles away from Sterling and my other gaming friends, we've been trying out OpenRPG and Skype for playing online. It's a decent substitute, but lacks the fun of being there. (duh)

Can't say as I've formed enough of an opinion as to who here I'd want to play with. Though being able to play with the designers would be worthwhile, even if they didn't suit my own preferences of play.

this man speaks the truth!!!

many a play-by-post game has foundered in the mires of miscommunication, leaving them to rot in the darkened corners of the forum they were to played in frown.gif

this is largely because too few of them are arranged with an understanding of how often you are expected to post, resulting in the situation tisoz has described... you have two people who post 3 pages of material while some other guy is at work, so comes to check on the game and he's already missed everything happening, and has to read through 3 pages and sits there wondering how to retroactively interact with the other two after the conversation has already been completed.

meanwhile, you've got 1 or 2 others who only intend to post once or twice a week, perhaps because they can only get to a computer with internet access that often, perhaps because they like to think things over, or whatever.

net result: chaos. game loses players. GM gets frustrated trying to manage it all. eventually the 2 fast players are stuck waiting for the rest of the team to catch up to where they are, while the rest of the team is busy trying to figure out how to respond to the fact that they've missed so much happening and feel weird responding all of a sudden after 5 minutes (IG) of conversation....

so yeah, moral of the story: find out what everyone's expectations are before you start the game. you don't want to add to the pile of games that die before the first meet really even gets going, do you? wink.gif

Hmm... well I've already played alongside Adam J (for those fewminute you had free) while the_dunner was running some. And ran a game for Bull, Ampere, Eido... man, who else was in there?

There are actually quite a few more people I'd love to run and play with here who I won't call "big names".. at least not around these parts of the forums.

Hopefully someone will remember his promise wink.gif

There is actually a way you can play a SR4 session with forum members, go to Gencon. I was able to meet Aaron Pavao, Grendel, and Redjack. Aaron and Grendel I met at the GM workshop and Redjack played Puck in the SR4 game we played. He played quite a few hilarious tricks on me. I also think I might have had a forum member GM the run I did for the Draco foundation, in which I played Tennie Shu(or something like that). It was good fun.

Yeah, I couldn't remember either. I'm pretty certain that Dash was in that one, and I thought the_dunner was, but can't remember. I remember Bull crashed out about half way through.

And if you guys don't quit building up your expectations, the harsh reality is just going to be so much worse. nyahnyah.gif

There are tons of people I'd love to play a game with on here. Some of them specifically because we see stuff differently, other just because it just seems like it would rock.

Eleazar--which table were you at for the Bootcamp? I was at the first table on the left when you walked in to the room and had Andromeda/Betsy/"the best DW HTR medic you will ever meet" come over and play the whiny GF card.

GenCon is probably the best way to go. If memory serves, I've sat at tables, gamed with, or been rabidly hugged by almost all of the admins. (Though that last one was only one of the admins...)

My table of All-Stars would be the Freelancers and Missions writers, but that's because I think they spend too much time writing and not enough time playing. At least I don't get to play half as much as I write...
DTFarstar
I'm really trying to plan around making it to Gen Con next year, but I don't know with all the classes and stuff. I really hope I will be able to. I would love to meet most of you guys.

Also, I like playing with people of differing views, but mfb reminds me alot of myself and since we disagree it is likely we would argue alot and not in the constructive way. However, I think I would really like hanging out with him. I've been a reader here since right after 4th came out, but it took me awhile to join after that. I never joined till I got the books and felt qualified to comment, and I spent most of my time reading the runs in the Welcome to the Shadows forum till recently and now you poor bastards can't get me to shut up.

First off, i'm flattered smile.gif

Second, I'll echo what a couple people have said... gaming online can be a pain. It can work, and be tremendous fun, but it's really hard too. Between scheduling with people in different parts of the country (for "live" games), or simply dealing with Play by Post games where some participants have near constant net-access vs those of us who have limited access time. Plus, the sometimes glacial wait times while waiting on someone to take their "turn".

I don;t really game too much anymore, which is a fucking shame. I half played in a game with Caine at GC (We also had Flakjacket and... I know there was a 5th), Unfortunately, it was also late at night, and I was wiped out, and ended up bailing part way through cause I couldn;t keep my eyes open. It wa fun, but I'm getting old.

I did play in a game a couple weeks ago and actually had a blast. I really wish I could juggle my work schedule so I could play in it regularly, but I usually work that night frown.gif

It would actually be interesting to try and set up a few "Dumpshock only" games at the con, see who we could get, but I don;t know how the logistics of such a thing would work, if it's possible at all. Getting space is tough, and GC is getting to be so monstrous it's really hard to manage much of anything anymore.

It would likely be much more feasible to set up something at Origins, since it's smaller, but it's also less likely to get much of a turn out from here there.

Oh, and as for gaming with people... Just because I might clash with folks on here doesn't mean I would IRL. A lot of folks are quite different offline, and almost everyone I've ever met from the RN mailing list or from here that I thought was a huge asshole online, was usually a really nice guy and pretty cool to chat with in RL. I'm always amazed, and slightly confused, by the idea that people portray themselves so differently online sometimes.

Plus, I'm a bit more rigid here than I am elsewhere, especially the last couple years, since I have to play sheriff.

I agree. Everyone has to get on the same sheet of music. I have a pbp game running over 18 months and I have no idea how long some of BishopMQ's (and others) games are running but I'm sure they beat that. I also have started half a dozen that didn't make it past the initial meet. It's all in the group dynamic and people's ability to mesh up posting frequency and gaming styles.
BishopMcQ
My longest running game has crested the 3 year mark. It started out with all of the players who expressed interest in Grey/Ecclesiastes' Bounty Hunting game who were not picked. (I think I got the best ones because we finished the run biggrin.gif) That storyline continued into the consequences of playing with Templars and borrowing money from the Mafia, and is now an active hunt--So, yeah it's been three threads, but events from one roll into the next.

I think a big piece of the longevity is player's trust of other players. In one of the games I was a player in, our group had effectively meshed as a type of over-protective family where we trusted each other and hated the world. Because the players worked with each other, we each had some flexibility over describing other PCs responses. This resulted in a water and bagel fight over the kitchen table as a stress-reliever hours before an intense insertion effort and firefight.

Our table had the "everything but DnD sucks card". Towards the end, Aaron and his friend came over and finished up at our table because we didn't have enough people due to two of our players leaving. I believe we also had the oldest gamer in the room. I think he was in his 60s. If you were looking at the room when first going through the door, we were the second table on the right.

A.) I was bored.

B.) To see what types of gaming you guys liked.

Video is extremely bad, due to the bearish lumberjack playing a hot lesbian ninja elf trying to flirt with your hot lesbian ninja elf effect.

The less seen, the better. The less heard, the better, too. Except, of course, for MP3 and/or MIDI files of atmospheric background music and voice clips stolen from video games.

As for players, I'd like to do one with WR sometime and maybe Fisty and possibly mfb, and maybe Fortune, possibly KK and maybe nezumi.

But it is so hard to decide I'd probably just a team of identical twincestuous lesbian elf ninja sextupplets with slightly different skills and personalities and just them up first-come-first-serve, just to see who takes the challenge and how it works itself out.

QUOTE (Bull @ Sep 15 2007, 07:59 AM)
I'm always amazed, and slightly confused, by the idea that people portray themselves so differently online sometimes.

There are other reasons but I think part of it is being understood differently via text. Text is very low bandwidth compared to inperson communication. The turn around is slower. The body language is missing. Tone of voice has to be simulated. A lot of sutblties are lost if the author isn't completely aware of sending them out normally because you have to be more conscious and explicit putting them into text. I know that I'm not very good at it and so it is pretty easy to misread me. *shrug*

Not to say I'm a lot different in-person. cool.gif Just, in my estimation, a lot more fun to be around because you'll actually laugh at things I think are funny. Or something.

Onto the original post: I suspect there are a lot of people here that I could play a session or two with and it'd be great but when faced with a longer campaign one of us would tune out because of incompatible game world preferences.

Also because of the limitation of my skills mentioned earlier in the post I feel very limited playing online to the point of feeling some slight fustration. But worse I want my instant gratification from playing and I WANT IT NOW! Playing an RPG is very visceral for me. I love thinking tactics and strategy fast. The pressure of the moment brings out a clarity and creativity in my thought.

Video might work for me, I've never tried it. But I stand up a lot during play too and move around. My body language moves in 3D and I like the immersion of people around me. So I have my doubts, probably depends on how good of quality the video stream is.

Oh don't get me wrong. He's young and feeling his oats. The Shadowrun world isn't that far behind the likes of Rifts in it's over-the-top nature so he isn't really out of place. I agree that the Shadowrun game isn't any less and probably is more for him playing it. The kid had/has fun and there is certainly something to be said for that.

But I thought that it would be hilariously spectacular to see the results of a session with him as GM of that group. In a "preferably not in my Shadowrun group" sort of way.
